Southampton Midfielder Wants To Leave In The Summer
Thursday, 23rd Jan 2025 21:15

According to media reports Joe Aribo wants to leave St Mary's in the summer with clubs in Turkey being keen to sign him up, however although he only has a year on his contract left the size of his salary could be an issue for any interested club.

Joe Aribo has been a decent signing for Saints after arriving from Rangers in 2022 for a fee said to be around £5 million, but his stay here has been one of struggling for form at times and finding it hard to be consistent.

Now givemesport.com are claiming that the player who will turn 29 in the summer wants pastures anew.

The suggestion is that he could end up in Istanbul, with Besiktas known to be long-standing admirers of the Nigerian International.

Southampton may well be open to offers, Aribo has a year left on his contract and they should at least get their money back after his four seasons at the club.

But the stumbling block may well be his salary which is reported to be £70,000 per week a factor that all but rules out a move to former club Rangers anytime soon and could well be a stumbling block for Turkish clubs, we have seen their lack of cash over the past 18 months in their pursuit of Tall Paul Onuachu.

So I think we could well have another situation where whoever comes in for him will look for a loan deal, whether Saints will go for that is another situation, they may feel that they would prefer to keep him, if they can't get him off their books in the summer.

If we could move him on in January I think that would be a good move, apart from losing the song 😂
£70,000 a week for a very one footed player is rather a lot, when you consider the wages of those around him, plus a very big wage for a championship club! He has shown up far more recently and perhaps we now know why?

To his credit Joe has made a brave attempt to hold onto reputation and career prospects.
He is still in the Nigerian International squad, where the competition is quite fierce, but a drop in league status would be fatal for what remains of his top flight career.
He is first choice player in our (sadly) rather poor squad but gives reasonably consistent performances compared to some others.
The Championship is a league best-suited to rising young talents and those mature players who have already reached their peak. At his age, he needs a move to a reasonably respectable side (even another Prem. club) who can use his talents to better effect. If he inevitably moves on, I would wish him well.
