How about Chris Beech?
at 20:44 28 Mar 2023

He got Carlisle United to the top of League Two from sod all wage bill. Then when Covid appeared the run ended. Maybe, without knowing it, the squad had Long Covid, certainly the energy was not there and that was half of the winning formula. Beech was never the same again and after an indifferent start to the next season gradually became worse he had to go.

He is doing very well at Fylde and you obviously know him well. He may be urinated off by the unfortunate way things went at Carlisle United and have the necessary fire in his belly to make a comeback.

It is worth battling on to finish 23rd.
at 23:53 26 Mar 2023

In League Two there is always the possibility of a club being in such a dire financial situation that it gets thrown out of League Two. If one club did get thrown out then only the team that finished bottom would get relegated.

So Dale should battle on to finish 23rd. Even if it does not save Dale from relegation it would create a competitive base situation going into the close season.

Crawley Town v Doncaster Rovers, Broadfield, League Two, 7:45pm Tuesday March 21

Come on Doncaster Rovers, kick Crawley Town hind quarters.

A Doncaster Rovers win tonight plus a Dale win at Crawley Town on Saturday and the game is afoot .

I do not believe that it is all over.

Let's believe that on any match day Crawley Town and Hartlepool United can both lose. Such is the case this week-end. Dale have beaten better teams than Swindon Town. Tomorrow the distance between Dale and safety can become 2 points with nothing in the goal difference, and then the game is afoot.

Crawley Town will play their two games in hand on the next consecutive Tuesdays. Both are at Crawley against Doncaster Rovers and Grimsby Town, 21st and 28th March.

Quite, it is clear that I merely thought of it in a slapdash, shoddy manner rather than giving it the full consideration that you have done!

For Hartlepool United and Crawley Town their 44th match of the season on 22nd April is :-

Hartlepool United v Crawley Town

Ideally the match should be a draw with both sides fielding an ineligible player and getting a point deducted.

No platitudes whatsoever have been posted by me. I merely hope that Dale do not get relegated and I estimate what a narrow escape path could be.

Various people have posted some very high estimates of the number of points needed which
it is easy to prove from past seasons are alarmist and out of reach. I estimate that 39 points may well just about be enough, possibly 38 may be enough. One point per game from now on is not a fantasy. It can be done, then let's see what it achieves.

Yes, I am a Carlisle United fan.

By "we" I mean anyone who wants Dale to avoid relegation. I have not issued any platitudes. I want Dale to avoid relegation. I have specified a likely target of points that will give Dale a chance. Getting to that target is not a guarantee of staying up but it is a possibility to achieve it and it may just be enough.

We have to be optimistic that the Dale average slightly increases and the Hartlepool / Crawley average remains the same or diminishes.

A point per game is not a fantasy target for Dale. It might just be enough.

Meanwhile of course we take one game at a time. We can concurrently look at the big picture and take one game at a time.

Hartlepool have a better points-per-game ratio than Crawley, so it is necessary to finish above Hartlepool. At their present points-per-game ratio the finishing total for Hartlepool would be :-
(29 / 35) * 46 = 38.11

If Dale continue to have a better goal difference than Hartlepool, which is likely if Dale get to the same points as Hartlepool, then the Dale points target is therefor 39 or more likely 38.

So for Dale 1 point per game from now on could be enough. The number of points that would certainly keep Dale up is a fantasy target. Consider 39 or 38 and just hope.

Dale are staying in League Two, you can rely upon it. Crawley now have a worse points-per-match ratio than Hartlepool. They will struggle to get the 3 points from 3 games that is the gap between them and Hartlepool.

The gap between Dale and Hartlepool at 3:00pm last Saturday was 6 points. Now it is 4 points. Hartlepool is the slightly less ugly of these Ugly Sisters. Dale will finish above Hartlepool and Crawley will finish below Hartlepool.

Stevenage were the only team in the current top 13 to lose yesterday.

Dale were the only team currently below 10th to win yesterday.

Northampton Town v Crawley Town
Tranmere Rovers v Hartlepool United
Rochdale v Stevenage

Crawley and Hartlepool should both lose. A Dale draw would be 1 point gained on them both. Let's see this happen on several occasions such that Dale eventually get back into the fight.

Based upon Hartlepool United and Crawley Town being relegated the calculation of the Rochdale escape total is based upon Crawley Town's ratio of points per game thus far. Crawley Town's ratio of points per game is better than that of Hartlepool United.

(26 / 30) * 46 = 39.87

Thus for Rochdale to finish with 1 point more than 23rd place the required number of points is now 41.

What is the minimum number of points that will save Dale's League Two status?
at 14:31 25 Feb 2023

Quite, when the facts change I change my mind. They are now gagging for it. At the time they had scored hardly any goals whatsoever.

I have seen estimates on here that 50 points are needed, 48, etc etc.
In 5 of the last 10 seasons 42 points were enough to finish 1 point clear of 23rd.
Over the last 10 seasons the average points total to finish 1 point clear of 23rd was 44.2.
Last season the Biffos finished 23rd on 38 points.

Crawley Town have a superior points-per-game ratio to Hartlepool United.
Therefor, based on Crawley Town's points-per-game ratio this is the calculation of the number of points that they will finish on :-
(26 / 29) * 46 = 41.24

Let's call that 42, a number that no doubt Douglas Adams would have approved of.
It is not likely that even if Dale reached 42 points they would make up the current goal difference margin of 10 between them and Crawley Town. So my expectation is that Dale need a final total of 43 points.
