Completely agree. I posted on some thread this week the very same thing about the oxymoron of 'making your own luck', and a few posters answered back with great phrases and quotes to the same effect. |

I agree with all of that, Hunter. Superb post. Luck in life, in birth, in geography, in whther our parents had food for us, what century we were born in, whether we were born in war-draft times...absolutely. I just disagree with using bad luck in a game situation as a crutch, and this is not aimed at you, of course, or anyone. Alfie Lloyd unlucky not to score? He shot twice, he missed twice. Close, and I feel for him, but luck did not enter the equation. He'll train harder, he'll learn more, he hopefully will improve. And when he does, he'll score. And luck will have nothing to do with it. |

There's a lot there to digest, Norris, and at first glance I agree with some of it, disagree with some of it, and will have to think about the rest. But I will say this to stick up for you as you're getting downvotes, and also because I just plain agree: the tactical set-up in pre-season and at the start of the competitive season was a serious concern. A huge concern. Did he have a balanced squad? No. Was there always a reason for him playing an unbalanced team? Certainly up for discussion. |

On a general note, it has always bothered me that if something tragic like this happens in Central Africa or Central Asia the coverage would not be the same, but then a journo friend told me it was very simple - USA coverage is plentiful and cheap for TV producers to obtain and show. Best wishes to any of you who know people caught up in this x |

Plus, when we lost the ball Wilkins got behind it and into position. Madsen, earlier on in the season at least, didn't. Neither did Andersen. And we were easy to break on. What we don't know is whether that was their decision or Cifuentes' tactical instructions, |

I use them a lot. I love them. But they're only as good as the input, same as opinion polls are only as good as the questions. Worse, putting stats into an algorithim to calculate a match score for a player can be dangerous. I want to know how many passes Gazza landed correctly, and the stats tell me 63. Job done. But if the stats tell me that he lost possession five times and they don't tell me whether all five were in front of our own goal or whether all five were excellent crosses that were very well defended, then that's my fault because I didn't ask the stats to tell me that. So the algorithim takes a bashing, and Gazza gets a totally unjust 6.4. In the Luton game, the stats say that Morgan landed 31 passes and misplaced 10. That doesn't look great and it bashes the hell out of the fancy algorithim, but it doesn't tell us how many of those passes were good forward passes that were just well defended. A good analyst goes back over the video time and time again and chats to management, and then chats to Morgan and most likely tells him to ignore the stats in this case and to keep playing positive forward passes, and maybe remind him that Ray Wilkins was a superb passer and he never hit 100% either. Defensively: I doubt Paolo Maldini's match ratings would have been accurate either. When he played, so often the oppo midfielder looked up and saw Maldini covering his man expertly and decided not to pass there. Job done by Maldini yet again, but the fancy algorithim takes another bashing, because we didn't ask the stats to record great marking. |

Bosh, Sorry to go off-topic but talking about McGuinness will help in assessing Frey, I hope... I was watching McGuinness, as I always do. He's an interesting player, but I can't make my mind up about him. Frey has bullied him in open play twice now, he's not quick, he's one-footed, not sure he likes a tackle, but then he has huge height and is trusted as the main man in their very well planned and executed set pieces, so he must also have leadership skills and be trusted. Interesting to hear that he hasn't been dominated before, because for all of his height he's 24 and looks slight to me. The question I keep mulling over is "who would you prefer in your team/club - McGuinness or Dunne?" |
