Even Bobby Robson was forced to change during a World cup where from recollection he dropped Butch Wilkins who played similar to Grimes and stifling creativity..

Grimes should have been relieved of the captaincy a couple of years ago. It should have been given to Darling. Changing managers so often hasn’t helped this situation. I agree with you but the evidence does suggest that he has "pulled a Martin" as in he changed tactics briefly but then after a few good results reverted to type.
Bobby Robson was a much better manager who wasn't averse to change because he knew that you can't keep forcing square pegs into round holes and everything will turn out good.
The last para hits the nail on the head. We have a thin squad, we needed it adding to but instead we have offloaded players. Instead of giving a youngster a chance to impress he has sent some on loan and sold Abdullai. We've done that and only brought in one loan player. Whether LW agrees with that or it was done by those above him because of P&S I can't say but right now it seems like the club is being run by incompetents.
Now Grimes, there's a group of us on here who have been critical of Grimes for a long time and conversely, there's a group who have always defended him but I don't see much sign of his defence tonight (much like the last 28 minutes of the match actually!) so does everyone, or at least most of us finally agree that he is not a Captain and he isn't the great influence that some have claimed? Answers welcome, please someone, can anybody efend him, or any of the players?

Grimes movement, pressing forward into space and pass tp Key led to his cross for Cullen to score our goal, three players who when they get their game right seem to have good points going for them, 30 seconds later that came crumbling down, Tymon's fault or just what is being asked of them.
I expected a defence that would ne a bit shaky with the new play in place but generally we had the game within our grasp until the inevitable lack of concentration which resulted in the first and them the soul destroying second, and the mistakes just kept on coming.
Grimes is not a defensive midfielder he hasn't the pace for it, we see players sizing up players knowing the ones they can outstrip as they push the ball passed them, Rodon on the ball being chased by Cullen springs to mind. Two slow players linking up the midfield doesn't work until they commit forward but they can't if the fullbackks have pressed on.
Fullbacks down the wings or in the midfield, with the Captian struck deep in between to centrehalves all the time is crazy, if the centrebacks can't see a out ball they still have the goalie they don't need fullbacks crowding the wingers out they need quick balls to the wingers with support in the middle of the park from the midfield. They can switch play using the fullbacks and don't have to got through Grimes.
I would have Franco as our defensive midfield anchor man over Grimes any day of the week, sorry Captian and midfield anchor man.

I agree, we end up taking too much time in the ball in the defence, making too many attempts to try and control the ball in the midfield when facing our goalie instead of using one touch as and when needed but providing the support they need, you will never stop players making mistakes but being in a formation to cover for those mistakes is paramount at the moment we are playing high risk football with very little safe guards in place | | | |
