Presumably, algorithim-based. Sofascore's analysis of the Luton game concluded that Morgan was our worst player. I mean, I love stats. But they're compiled by humans. https://www.sofascore.com/football/match/luton-town-queens-park-rangers/bsxb#id:

Morgan doesn't seem to have been credited with an assist for the Frey goal anywhere, which probably drops his score quite a bit. Is that because it glances off the defender first? There wasn't much contact.

That's odd. He had possession, he gave it to another player, who scored. It's practically the definition of an assist.

Yeah, I was very surprised. If you're being very picky I guess you can say either that the ball comes off the defender or there's the question mark over Frey handling it first but it's not like it's gone cannoning off somewhere from a deflection, Morgan places the ball exactly where Frey is and the Luton player never has control of it at any point. As you say, it's a straightforward assist.

I use them a lot. I love them. But they're only as good as the input, same as opinion polls are only as good as the questions. Worse, putting stats into an algorithim to calculate a match score for a player can be dangerous. I want to know how many passes Gazza landed correctly, and the stats tell me 63. Job done. But if the stats tell me that he lost possession five times and they don't tell me whether all five were in front of our own goal or whether all five were excellent crosses that were very well defended, then that's my fault because I didn't ask the stats to tell me that. So the algorithim takes a bashing, and Gazza gets a totally unjust 6.4. In the Luton game, the stats say that Morgan landed 31 passes and misplaced 10. That doesn't look great and it bashes the hell out of the fancy algorithim, but it doesn't tell us how many of those passes were good forward passes that were just well defended. A good analyst goes back over the video time and time again and chats to management, and then chats to Morgan and most likely tells him to ignore the stats in this case and to keep playing positive forward passes, and maybe remind him that Ray Wilkins was a superb passer and he never hit 100% either. Defensively: I doubt Paolo Maldini's match ratings would have been accurate either. When he played, so often the oppo midfielder looked up and saw Maldini covering his man expertly and decided not to pass there. Job done by Maldini yet again, but the fancy algorithim takes another bashing, because we didn't ask the stats to record great marking.

I agree Brian. I love stats too but yes they can confuse as much as enlighten. At the end of the Luton match my sister asked me who I thought was MOM. I instinctively said Morgan and was amazed at his stats. You're right they don't give context like 100% pass accuracy if you only complete safe sideways passes in your own half is not worth as much as 80% that gets you up the pitch into strong attacking positions.
Cifuentes and Dunne Nominated For Monthly Awards on 14:08 - Jan 9 with 1533 views | Hugey | Interesting thread! At first I found Morgan's MotM highlights package from the Luton game a little underwhelming (having also said he was by far and away MotM after the game). But I guess that's the point. He makes everything look simple. [Post edited 9 Jan 14:10]

Not true. 66% are fine, it's the other 42% that are crap.

I was very surprised by the stats after the Luton game which suggested it was a very decent, but very even game. I had QPR ahead in most areas and a four to one win, would not have been surprising.

Cows are terrifying, which everyone who's been in a field when a number of them start sizing you up and moving, can attest.

Cows kill 20 people a year in the US alone. Sharks are nowhere near that lethal, although they are a bit more 'bitey'

Also human interactions with cows are likely to be more numerous than their interactions with sharks. (Though I don't have the stats to prove it!)

Nonsense. Show me a misplaced pass from Ray Wilkins sir, and I shall show you an incorrectly placed player, damn your eyes! - Ray Wilkins completed passes he hadn't even played. - Most players pass in 3 dimensions apart from Ray Wilkins, who could also pass through time. - The official ID document currently known as the "Passport" will eventually be renamed the "Rayport" once international governments have found the money. - It's a popular misconception that the first atom was split by Cockroft and Walton at Cambridge University. The truth is it was split by a through ball from Ray Wilkins to Les Ferdinand in a cup game away to Cambridge. - International standards for weights are based on one of two accuracy criteria: the Kibble balance or the weight of a Ray Wilkins pass.

Jimmy deserves a vote simply for his response in his post-Preston match interview to being asked to give a Xmas message to supporters, which was - with a wry smile - "Stay out of the pubs - it's not good for you"!!

Poor Jimmy can’t get a game for probably the worst Ireland team in generations. He’s criminally underrated at the moment.
