Brendan mentions us in his press conference 20:57 - Jan 7 with 1826 viewsRhonddaSwans

He remembers when he could pass back here without booing .
In a nutshell.

I can remember under russ we would get pissed off with the backwards passing.

Does he have a point though šŸ¤”?

This is what Brendan said
I remember my time at Swansea where you would make a backward pass because you could not go forward,ā€ he said (Celtic FC on YouTube).

ā€œThe crowd could recognise what was happening.

ā€œThey clap, they square the pass, then you play a forward pass and it changes the point of attack. It is recognising the game and that feels good for the players. They do not see that as a negative, it is to start a new attack.ā€

This is nothing how it was like under Russ....the ball went sideways and backwards despite there bing opportunity to pass forward

Rodgers is ok in my eyes , anything else regarding the Club he manages makes me want to throw up.

When it's all about looking to switch the point of attack then there is a point to it. When it is passing it back without looking to switch the point of attack that is a different issue.

This is what we try to do now, albeit less successfully and with inferior players.

We often try to go down one flank, get crowded out, go back to the fullback, then centre back, across the back line and forward down the other flank. Obviously this is 30 seconds or so of unchallenged possession and affects the possession stats.

Itā€™s essentially what heā€™s describing.

The difference is we were much more incisive when we got past halfway with the likes of Rangel and Dyer playing triangles with our midfield. The bit about starting again and changing the point of attack is the same.

Against QPR passing across the back was a lot quicker most noticeable was the ball went to Ronald without Key getting in the way, then as need Key was in a position to support with good movement from himself, Ronald and Franco quickly opening spaces.

One little point about moving the ball across the backs is the player receiving the ball must be aware of the players around both his own team and opposition not once as the ball is order to go from one side to the other to switch the point of attack do we look to switch it back to the side the ball original came from because as the opposition shift to the point of defense on the other side, same can quickly open up on the original flank the ball came from.
We are far to rigid in set movements.

When it's laboured it gives the opposition time to reset

Exactly.

Passing and moving needs to be done with intent and tempo, both of which are completely absent in Williams/Martin style football. Grimes can sit there racking up as many completed passes in the final third back and fore between the flanks as he likes, but it'll get us nowhere.

People are getting excited about Ginelly returning to action. Odds are if he returns he'll either get the ball far too deep because he's had to come back for it, or far too late when the opposition have had time to double up on him. Then some will blame him for it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Franco and Allen gets Grimes further up the park when they are missing he drops back indicates we need players to play at their standard to accommodate Grimes in the team or achange from Grimes.
Do think our set up expecting the fullbacks push high too early also encourages Grimes to drop too deep, we have seen on the right Franco drops into the fullback position to cover Key meaning the centrehalf Cabango doesn't get pull out wide all the time, there is an issue on the left which needs to be resolved that is why Steve Cooper ended up playing three in the midfield to help cover the flanks and the middle but that resulted in a less potent attack.

Question is why Williams doesnā€™t address this issue
Grimes is also captain and leader ffs

He had a chance to try something different in the middle in the League Cup but to fair Williams tried different players in both Defence and attack but not the very middle of the midfield.

Yes, absolutely. Iā€™m not trying to imply Williams and this group of players do it anywhere near as effectively as Rodgers and his.

Itā€™s the same principle, itā€™s not pointless possession and it does increase the amount of ball we have, which some people get annoyed about.

Without doubt, itā€™s slower and more predictable. As Richard said, itā€™s far more effective when you vary the side and angle you attack from. In fairness, Rodgers was a better manager and he was working with better players.

Brendan's squad was built up over time. After relagation and failure to get promotion while also avoiding further drops has been a bit ofa juggling act with all the ins and outs

Agree that it's the same principle but for whatever reasons, a lot of the time it isn't achieving the objective because it is so slow and predictable.
Then it effectively becomes possession for possessions sake as we are not being constructive.

We may not have the quality of Rodger's team but to be effective I agree with both yourself and RichardO we have to move the ball quicker and be more aware of where the new point of attack needs to be.

Kind of agree.

Weā€™re taking the ball from an area we are likely to be turned over, to the other side of the pitch where we usually have a numerical advantage.

I wouldnā€™t say preventing the opposition nicking the ball and counter attacking in areas they have more players doesnā€™t have purpose, but I agree itā€™s not a very effective attacking tactic, particularly when compared to when Martinez and Rodgers teams did it.

I think that we are pretty much on the same page.

When we are slowly going nowhere and someone tries to force a pass that isn't on we can get into a real mess.

Is it the players not being good enough or not understanding the system, the manager not being able to get the ideas across or teams knowing how to play against it? Or perhaps a bit of each?

With slow central midfielders and no Rodri to cover them and set the tempo Man City are now very open to fast counters.

Third paragraph - probably all of it.

We donā€™t have the individual players to drive through midfield and open up gaps and we donā€™t have the kind of synergy the Martinez and Rodgers teams had that let them pass and move their way through opponents.

As Richard said, those teams were together a long time and players instinctively knew what their teammates would do.

Plus they were better individually as well as collectively.
