We will live to regret not signing O’Riley on 21:53 - Aug 11 by hedgeend61 | Let's hope we're not pinning our PL hopes spending £25m on a player who's never played PL level and couldn't even get in a poor Denmark squad. Our fans bigging him up having never heard of him before we were linked, or ever seen him play before make you laugh. He may be the next Michael Laudrup, but then again he might not. |
That is the case for a fair chunk of our fans and in fairness it is probably the same at most clubs, they look at price tags being quoted and not the stats behind them. O'Riley was probably a good shout at £15-17 million which is about the value currently on transfermarkt, but £25 million is way over the top. He joined Celtic for just £1.5 million only 2 years ago, just what has he done in the meantime to make his value soar, play in a two horse race league and as someone has mentioned he can't even get into the Denmark side. Our problems, go back to 2016/17 when we started to pay relatively big money for players who turned out to do very little and were then stuck on the wage bill.

How much did we pay for Virgil van Dijk who came from that 'two horse race league' and how much did we sell him for?

We bought VVD for about £11.5 million, it is not so much about the League but the quality of the players, VVD had played in the Dutch Eridivisie for two seasons, so had top flight experience when he joined Celtic

You brought up the league by calling it a two horse race. Top Celtic players need to be on top of their game because they are expected to win the title etc and often play in Europe.I remember the much vaulted Leeds side losing to Celtic and didn’t they beat Chelsea recently at Stamford Bridge guess who was the star player for them. Didn’t Man City lose to them also in the States. [Post edited 12 Aug 10:28]

That chelsea game was also in the states. I wouldn't pay too much attention to these friendly results as celtic are a couple of weeks ahead of the English clubs in preparedness for the new season. In a proper competitive game they would get smashed.
