Sunday Supplement : What is the FA Cup worth to Swansea City ?
Sunday, 24th Jan 2021 08:32 by Adrian Gold & Keith Haynes

Swansea a Independent takes a look at this years FA Cup with its reduced winning amounts per round due to the pandemic, and adds up the worth of a decent FA Cup run.

The FA Cup still rewards winners of each round

Swansea City are once again accumulating some extra wealth this season as a decent FA Cup run always does, okay it’s only two wins to date but what’s the worth to the club itself ? Rewards for winning teams have been taken back to the 2018/19 season by the FA citing the pandemic, hence the lower values involved in the 2020/21 season. In Swansea City’s case a win at Stevenage in the third round earned the club £69,000 with no LIVE transmission fee’s other than the highlights package shows on BT Sport, BBC etc.

Things got far more interesting for the swans in the fourth round, a home tie against Nottingham Forest was never going to be easy, but the winners would receive £90,000 plus if any game was transmitted LIVE an extra £85,000. As we know the game was transmitted LIVE on the BBC so yesterday’s game earned Swansea City £175,000 adding to the already accumulated £69,000 we are on the quarter of a million mark for winning two games. Let’s not forget the five goal destruction either. Worth it’s weight in gold. And all the goal scorers have come through the Swansea system playing the Swansea way.

A great day yesterday for Swansea City academy products

Moving on now to round five, the last thirty two clubs and the swans again find themselves at home to Manchester City. Nobody is going to say the home team will be the victors but Pepe Guardiola will know he got away with a lucky win a few seasons ago with a 3-2 win. Two clear offside goals won the game, and with VAR available but as the swans had just been relegated to the championship they were not allowed to use it. Lucky Pepe eh ? Had it been in use Manchester City would have won nothing more than a share of the gate money.

That’s a decent point to make, gate receipts are split in the FA Cup and that is clearly not happening this year so all clubs are going to suffer financially with the pandemic showing no signs of clearing off.

So,it is Manchester City at home and the winners of that game earn £180,000, it seems there are no losers award after the third round so it’s win or bust, However, the game is certain to be shown on TV which will earn the swans another £85,000. Already banked regardless of the fifth round result a nice £335,000 in the coffers. Money which no club would account for at the start of the season, it’s all a bonus. Superb news, I’m sure Steve Cooper May be asking our chief executive a few questions before the end of January about this extra stash of money.

Celina scores for the swans against Man City in the FA Cup

So, that’s the FA Cup prize and TV money explained, it’s not as much as recent years but let’s be honest it’s not to be sniffed at. A guaranteed £335,000 already for Swansea City, and you never know. If we actually get some decent officials included who are not blinded by the big club mentality Swansea City could well get a bit of revenge back for the last time around. If they do it’s another £180,000 banked taking the club to over half a million in the bank.

Who said the FA Cup doesn’t pay well ?

Probably most of the fans of clubs not in it because they have been knocked out. But that’s a whole different story.

Timings everything and its more than a pity that we the fans are not in the ground to provide that little extra lift that all teams need at some point during a game, but I'm confident that whatever the result we'll be back on the main stage showing everyone that we never ever went away , just lurking

It does not make sense that the losing team gets no prize money beyond the 4th round. That would only encourage a team like Swansea (heavily out gunned) to simply go through the motions. My analytical brain tells me this cannot be correct.

I’ve had a look Res, can’t see any losers money after round three. Odd.
