Jealousy is such an ugly trait on 07:13 - Dec 18 by smegma
In my lifetime of support (73 onwards) we've only played them about a dozen times so therefore there is no rivalry worthy of the name. My Dad/brother/sister are all Fulham so I used to go along as a kid then when Fulham were skint (85-97) I used to go along about 6 times a season. Fulham NEVER ever sung songs about the other two clubs in the borough. Then during the mid 90s , due to circumstances, they 'suddenly' developed a passionate hatred for all things Brentford. I went to a game at Griffin Pk once and the 'bitterness' between the clubs was amazing.I even went to a couple of away games with FFC mates and never heard a word about us or CFC. Between 92-97 I worked at Putney Bridge station and even went to reserve games about 8 times each season. Then suddenly the shopkeeper turns up and success arrives as do over 20,000 'lifelong' fans who have no memory of the previous 20 years. Then they hit on the idea of 'we hate QPR' all of a sudden. They even nickname CFC 'scum' having played them a similar amount of times to us in the past 20 years. 90% of Fulham fans don't recall games against the Bees or Orient yet claim they 'hate QPR' for historical reasons. Most of them wouldn't recognise Jim Stannard if he stood in front of them .I've had a soft spot for them all my life but it has been wearing thin these past few years with the idiots who claim to be fans of the club. And I bet I've still been to more games than a lot of so called 'lifelong fans'.
I totally agree with this. The 'scum' tag and idea of rivalry with Chelsea is ridiculous. I personally consider Brentford and Gillingham our most bitter rivalries due to the fact we played the a lot under tense circumstances in the late 80's and 90's, but I would also say that do consider QPR to be rivals now and on a much more equal footing than any other rivalry we've had before

I was at that game in 99 and thought the actions of quite a few Rangers was pretty shameful. Not just a few tw ats, but quite a lot of people whose instinct was to move towards the trouble instead of away from it.
It all depends on your age - every football fan should dislike Chelsea owing to them being a bunch of cu nts, but I find it a bit weird when you get some eighteen year old going on about hating Gillingham or Brentford.
If anyone wants to re-live the game in '99, here's some CCTV footage from the Enclosure:
There are a few other CCTV vids knocking about on Youtube from the same game showing the trouble in the seats and out on Stevenage Road. NB. Not glamourising this as I can't stand violence, but might add fresh perspective for others who were there, but couldn't see what was happening at the time (Fulham were mainly kicking from left to right in all the footage)

Winning 2-1 at Brentford in 1994 with a Robert Haworth header is one of my best memories of watching Fulham because in almost every game before that they (with the likes of Dean Holdsworth/Gary Blissett etc) they were the better team with the most obnoxious fans.
I would agree with your point that the rivalry with QPR was reignited in '99, but it was also there in 82/83- there was trouble in the Loft that season but I was it was the 80's so somewhat inevitable anyway

"but I find it a bit weird when you get some eighteen year old going on about hating Gillingham or Brentford."
Exactly. But there are also mid-teen Fulham and Brentford fans who go on about hating QPR because of things that happened before they were even born, or toddlers, and in Brentfords case towards us before even their parents were born!
If I have children, should I bring them up to hate Spurs because of what happened in 1908? (long story but it fked up our chances of becoming an established top flight club for the best part of 60 years)
Agree about all young fans should be brought up to hate Chelsea though lol!! ;o)

Agreed. Getting coined by other QPR fans from the Putney End was the perfect ending. I was used to away fans sitting near me in Ellerslie Road supporting their team, and I quite enjoyed the fact that people felt they could do this, though obviously there were times that it was much worse, eg Chelsea (no surprise), Spurs and Portsmouth. I had never seen Rangers as the aggressive interlopers like that before and it's no wonder that we're still disliked for it, especially by people who had never met us before.
It shows how fragile tolerance is, that one incident can create gallons of bad blood. "We'll never play you again" and all the assumption on the part of vocal Fulham fans that I must be a pikey mong because of the team I support all flows from there. In the same way, all this gushing from the media about the wonderful Cantona glosses over his petulant violence at Selhurst and the lies that were made up about it, which kicked off a vendetta that saw someone killed.

But trouble wasn't so uncommon in 82-83 - as you say, it was kicking off all over the gaff back then, so whilst there might have been more trouble because it was a derby, rival estates and all that, we never had any trouble afterwards and I can't remember any animosity towards Rangers. We had Rangers midweek (?) in a friendly before the Micky Adams season and there was no hint of trouble at all. Rangers fans you bumped into still felt a bit sorry for us at that time.
That Brentford side were a horrible bunch of ba stards - Jamie fu cking Bates. Have met a couple of decent Brentford fans over the years, but "flats on the Cottage"...cun ts.

I know, it's all a bit silly, but there you go. If I got too analytical, I'd probably grow up and find something more worthwhile to do with my time and money than worrying about what happens to a load of soppy footballers every Saturday.
I like to think most switched-on kids will end up hating Chelsea without any parental guidance. There's just so much to dislike.

Interesting article about Matthew Simmons. He was very possibly a complete tool, but it makes the point that none of the people nearest him heard what Cantona said he had shouted, and that the corroboration for Cantona's story came from United fans who were further away. You hear what's said behind you at a game, but who ever hears what the people in front of them say?
I remember and was at the game in 99 and I think part of it was probably the success and money debing spent at Fulham versus us going downhill fast ther fcat it was the first game in years and bitterness and hatred spilling out on top of the usual local derby. Although generally Rangers say they don't mind Fulham and everyone agrees they hate Chelsea more when it comes to actual matchday things are different.

Didn't a Palace fan get killed at a semi final against United at Villa Park and thats the reference to the Cantona/Palace thing that led ultimately to the death of someone who was nothing to do with it.
United are an interesting case because down the years they've had some scum to rival Cardiff/Millwall or Stoke and some but for some reason it doesn't fit the profile of the Theatre of Dreams etc so it's all whitewashed from history.

Up until Saturday the west London derby I'd enjoyed most this century was when Marc Bircham scored an absolutely stupendous belting winner from a last minute corner versuses The Bees on April 19th 2003,5 games before we went to Cardiff for the play-off final:

It is a German (& perhaps yiddish) word meaning 'human being'.The German 19th century philosopher Nietzche coined the terms (later used and misappropiated by the Nazis). It was N's theory that society was in permanent struggle between two kinds of people; The 'Ubermenschen' or super humans (the aryans) and the 'Undermenschen' or sub humans (the jews)

I have a lot to say about this. Firstly Fulham. Don't really mind them at all. '99 can be seen as a turning point for the first time since '68, which for 20 years previous to that had been in Fulham's favour, although the playing field these days has become almost level again. Does anyone remember the 1-1 draw at the Cottage at the start of the '82-3 season? Fantastic match, not a hint of trouble, followed by the 3-1 win later that season when, frankly, Fulham blew promotion, mainly by losing at home to Leicester, which although the game at the Bush had a charged atmosphere, wasn't a patch on the other games we had against Leeds and Wolves around the same time for violence. I was in the Stevenage Rd seats for the '99 game, because of the initial lack of allocation, and unfortunately Konk could tell you more about that day, but not on here, much of it was of a personal nature though.
In true raconteur style, I have to pick No.1 son up from nursery so will continue later.

I was at the 1-1 too. One of Paul Parker's first games for Fulham, I believe. They had some good players then, including Ray Houghton and Gordon Davies.

I thought they missed out on promotion because they lost at Derby on the last day - Derby stayed up. Their fans were on the touchline for the last few minutes, kicking any Fulham player who came near. The ref blew up early and everyone ran for their lives. No doubt one of the Southern Gentlemen can describe it better.

Charlie wasn't with me though in 1971 when I was with my mate Fulham Dave In the stand opposite the river I'm convinced we won 3 or 4-0 that night and there was the odd sporadic punch up but nobdy took any notice, I'm sure It was circa 1971 (memory's gone to fck) you could park your Vauxhall Cresta anywhere at fulhams ground in those day's.
Anyone on here ever go to Cold Blow Lane and watch QPR win? I did, Cold Blow Lane was aptly named ATAF.

Went to Millwall and saw us win 1-0.
One thing i remember about that game was at half time we went to get a bovril, you had to go down some stairs to get to the bar and as we walked through the door there was a QPR fan hanging by his scarf from the rafters. He had a ' Dr Who ' type scarf on ( really long ) and anyone that went to help got a slap from Millwall fans. The old bill came in and grabbed the poor fcker by the legs and got him down. When we left at the end there was a Police van on it;s side outside the ground.
Was the 1st and last time my dad took me to cold blow lane.
The Fulham game in '99' i remember they had their toilets out of action and had about 5/6 potoloos downstairs. 5,000 fans 5 toilets. was bad downstairs.
