McCarthy 15:37 - Aug 30 with 1419 views | A1079 | Though I think McCarthy is a very average keeper he did help us get promotion and today must be a bitter pill for him to swallow. I know he will still get paid but it must hurt professionally.
McCarthy on 16:22 - Aug 30 with 1354 views | kingslandstand1 | Do you think he was told we were looking for a replacement for him when he signed his new contract only a few months ago?
McCarthy on 16:23 - Aug 30 with 1354 views | Chesham_Saint | He knows the score (and usually it's 0-1!). Seriously though, he's played back up before to both Forster and Bazuna and come through. I'm surprised how young he is though. He did play well for the last half dozen games (Newcastle howler aside) and I'm happy or him to be our No 2...

I suspect not Kingslandstand. Indeed, I am not so sure we were going to look for a replacement for him until that Newcastle howler. But, the noise about his shortcomings became louder than our vocal home support and it suddenly became a priority - though to be fair most fans always had concerns about McCarthy's ability. He has though, been professional since his time with us and he deserves recognition for what he did for us last season.

He bloody well has been 'professional'. He's raked in millions. At one time he was the highest paid player in our entire squad and he's probably still one of the highest paid. The crazy thing about this is that no other club wants him so there was no need to pay him that much. There are probably 100 goalkeepers playing in this country better than he is. When you look at his career before he washed up here, a lot of other clubs found that out quickly and got rid of him after seeing him play: Youth career Wimbledon –2006 Wycombe Wanderers 2006–2007 Reading Senior career* Years Team Apps 2007–2014 Reading 70 2007 → Woking (loan) 1 2008 → Cambridge United (loan) 1 2008 → Team Bath (loan) 2 2009 → Aldershot Town (loan) 4 2009–2010 → Yeovil Town (loan) 44 2010 → Brentford (loan) 3 2011–2012 → Leeds United (loan) 6 2012 → Ipswich Town (loan) 10 2014–2015 Queens Park Rangers 3 2015–2016 Crystal Palace 7 [Post edited 31 Aug 10:32]

Good points Dirk and I am sorry if I am coming across as making excuses for him as that is not what I intended. Also, put bluntly he is not good enough for this level. I have no idea what any of the players are paid - as far as I am concerned most PL footballers are paid way too much and I cannot relate to it at all. What I was trying to convey, and perhaps not that well, he must feel peeved from a professional player point of view, but ironically, that Newcastle howler (which he had no excuse for and he is experienced enough to have known better) may well have done us a favour. Anyway, all that aside, this window and the purchases have hopefully given us a better chance of competing though so much will depend on whether RM can find the magic formula in team selection and tactics to make it work. Lets hope we can start with some points today.

I am not sure it would have made any difference if he had known. I didn't see many other clubs registering an interest. I agree he has been a good servant etc, but lets not forget he was handsomely rewarded for an average keeper. I don't think any other club would have given him such lucrative contracts. Ramsdale is a massive upgrade and still surprised we landed him.

And Macca played for England, or was in the squad, as I recollect

1 sub appearance in a friendly v the USA. That was enough. Every English goalkeeper in the Premier League was getting called up to see if they were any good, and McCarthy wasn't. Fraser Forster was a regular in the squad and won 6 caps. [Post edited 2 Sep 12:48]
