And what about the actual Doctors, epidemiologists and scientists that actually gave this advice in the first place?

What would you have them do, pull you a pint in The Riverside?

Childish thread.

The point he’s making is a valid one, he’s saying basically that the Health Minister and the Head of the Royal College ought to be one and the same; that the heads of the various ministries ideally would be experts in their respective fields, widely acknowledged men and women of proven ability whose opinions command respect on merit.

If I wanted mortgage advice I could rely on I’d come to you, I wouldn’t ideally go and see a train driver who had been briefed on the basics an hour earlier and was stumbling over his crib notes on autocue. We place our confidence in those with the relevant years of experience.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Cafes and pubs are social hubs and sometimes the only chance people have to socialise and keep their sanity.

The rules make no sense, Dopey Drakeford is out of his depth

Like the 'White Swan', High Street, Swansea.

Perhaps a good example of why Drakeford is, unfortunately I admit, on the right track and is sensibly listening to his advisors.

Like it or not, he is a very intelligent man who also has political courage.

The head of the royal college might be of a different political persuasion to the Government so that won't work, the system of experts advising the Government is fine in principle.

I think Drakeford has done a good job. He isn't afraid to take tough decisions - he hasn't got them all right , but who has.He has shown far more leadership the Boris has and he hasn't gone missing once and fronted everything up himself. He didn't catch the virus either

That wouldn’t be a bad thing necessarily, would it?

Facts provide a sound check and balance to ideology.

The check could be said to be the other way round to stop institutionalised people who have only interest and knowledge of one subject spending all the money in their area at the expense of other areas.

Absolutely.

Today, Foreign Secretary, tomorrow Education Secretary. Next reshuffle, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Their versatility is mind boggling.

Yes. Do you recall when Boris was Foreign Secretary and had stated his opposition to the 3rd runway at Heathrow in terms of throwing himself in front of the bulldozers?

Then came the vote in Parliament and, showing himself to be a man of principle, buggers off to Afghanistan.

How can you respect someone like that.

In principle yes.

Unfortunately the Government frequently ignores the expert advice if it doesn't fit with their agenda and budget. Expert advice tends to look at long term improvements which can take longer than one Parliament to materialise whilst the government want a quick fix which will help them at the next election.

Political short termism is a reason why things as important as health and education should be taken out of politics and a consensus long term plan should be adopted and followed by all governments.

i agree totally. Johnson was telling all everything would be back to normal. Drakeford responded by saying he was being too optimistic. Johnson opened up places when cases were rising. His opening of sports grounds in England in September being the height of folly. Opening borders and using air bridges was another stupid policy. It was this policy that has led to the spike throughout the UK with people bringing back viruses that led to the increase through pubs and people socialising in private homes. Without him trying to open up everything we wouldnt be in the current scenario.

Scotia seems to blame Drakeford for everything whilst standing up for landlords. Havent yet seen him criticising his beloved Boss Brewey Bar for flouting coronavirus rules. How many pubs have flouted them. Three Compasses in Clydach, White Swan, Copper Bar, Old Havana and one on Wind Street. Noah's Yard in Uplands and the Villiers was opening during the first lockdown. This has nothing to do with Drakeford but pubs deliberately flouting the rules. Old Havana didnt even act after being told earlier on Beaujolais day they were breaking them.

Having a long term plan for 'nationalised' health and education would be workable with left wing Governments but not with the Tories about as their goal given half a chance would be to privitise health and get rid of state education as much as possible.

The Drake is doing a marvelous job in returning Wales to the dark ages. He's like he's on double doses of Valium the colossal div.

Wont matter anyway I don't think he'll stand in the next elections anyway which means the Welsh public can continue to vote Labour in election after election after election. yey

Totally agree, no doubt the reins will be handed over to the condensing prick Gething.

Wales will be similar to Albania (without the weather) in a few years.

How people outside of Cardiff continue to put Labour into government in Wales is baffling.

That's part of my reasoning. Also, I'd back a real medically qualified and experienced person to fully understand what other experts were telling him/her and so be able to challenge anything to ensure the advice is sound.

As it stands we have politicians being told things and I bet Hancock/Bojo or Drakers/Gething either don't understand bits or have to have it dumbed down for them.

Hancock would be fine in the treasury, Gething would be fine in the ministry of Justice but running our health services? No thanks.

I'll add something else which my wife said. The NHS was formed as a NATIONAL health service, not a devolved service that has different standards and outcomes, that sees a health postcode lottery allowing some people treatment but others with the same illnesses to die. If I'd lived in England I'd have had a new hip 4 years ago and my other health problems may never have happened.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Get over myself? For pointing out that you are talking gubbins?

Aye right though

Yet again you jump in without understanding the context of the comments made. Restaurants and pubs and other establishments have control measures in place such as social distancing one way systems, sanitising stations, limitations on the amount able to enter, for an example ASDA as I post this have 7 department managers off isolating some with some without the virus , they've wandered about amongst the thousands of customers who are left to browse sniff , touch breath on thousands of products followed by another thousand or so doing exactly the same thing , numbers are not quite the same when compared against restaurants and the like ?

Ha, nice plug, Who are ya then?? ;-)

But no, the point he was making came later in the thread, I agree with that. I was referring to the context of the OP.

But that's what Drakeford is doing, he's not gone to Tim Martin and asked his advice on the best course of action on the locking down of entertainment and light refreshment venues.

He's not even taken Gethin's advice.

He's gone with SAGE.

Precisely and this makes it all the more admirable what Drakeford has done. The elections are around the corner and he knew full well before shutting down the pubs what the reaction on the street would be.

People before politics.

Courage.
