Hornets game called off?? (n/t) on 16:37 - Mar 11 by hammerdale | Just a good diplomat.I prefer the York Chairman's version of events. |
He is claiming staff at the ground had a different agenda. I would be genuinely interested to know how removing the pitch covers was a health & safety issue in windy conditions.

The ones who refer to the football club as “The AFC” really need to realise how lucky they are though. |

Hornets game called off?? (n/t) on 02:40 - Mar 11 by pioneer | worth remembering that it was money from the sale of the athletic grounds that helped purchase the ground under the title of denehurst park. It was only in the last year or so that we bought out the partners in denehurst park (rochdale council and, by then, the rugby league) Without (the old) hornets organisation coming into the deal we might not have a club to support now. We had no money, they had no ground, it took two (actually three) to tango. They have every right to be disappointed and concerned about what happened. |
Its also worth remembering that, back in the 70s under the chairmanship of Jack Grindrod, Hornets practically stuck 2 fingers up at the football club when they were approached with a view to sharing the Athletic Grounds.
Hornets game called off?? (n/t) on 19:34 - Mar 11 with 2991 views | Thacks_Rabbits | I think everyone who turned up should get a free ticket, I doubt that will top 800. They got 650 or so vs Toronto and strangely attendance for other games does not work on hornets site. I have not looked at the number of games they play at home, would guess 15 or so, could not see ticket price, so call it £10, that’s a guess of around £120k turnover per season from attendance. Even if your said 200k from attendance it’s a joke, after wages, costs, rent (if paid) staff costs, they cant be far from going to the wall again. Maybe a dodgy political figure or publican is backing them up re funding, but dales attendance is very poor and hornets running on around 1/5th of that, is pathetic. If overall turnover was half a million, just a guess, how the hell can they run a professional club?

I'd be worried tomorrow night , big storm brewing, twice the strength of Sunday, get the reinforcements out to get the pitch covers removed,we don't want any health and safety issues.

How about they rename as Rochdale Jesters, joke club and maybe they could get sponsors from rentaghost, as they still live in the 80’s

Hornets game called off?? (n/t) on 18:15 - Mar 12 with 2305 views | judd | This puts it to bed CLUB STATEMENT ROCHDALE Hornets would like to provide supporters with further information following the late postponement of Sunday’s Betfred Championship fixture against York City Knights. The club wishes to address rumours and hearsay that has appeared on social media overnight and throughout Monday. The game was cancelled due to legitimate safety concerns at the Crown Oil Arena raised by stadium ground staff. High winds meant it was dangerous to remove the protective dome, and erect the rugby posts. An unsuccessful attempt was made to erect the posts at the Sandy Lane end of the ground and as time moved on, a decision was made by the head groundsman, in conjunction with the ground safety officer that the game would need cancelled. Rochdale Hornets are reliant on the expertise of qualified safety professionals to make these safety assessments, and as such, we are supportive of the decision made. It is important to recognise that players and officials from both Rochdale and the York wanted the game to go ahead. Both sets of players were already changed into their kit ready to warm-up and everyone shares in the frustration of not being able to play Sunday’s game. As a club, we extend our sincere apologies to all supporters who arrived to support their teams in what should have been an afternoon of quality rugby league, in particular the large number of York City Knights fans. Although the club were not made aware of the safety concerns until early afternoon, we apologise unreservedly to all supporters, particularly those who travelled significant distances for a lack of communication and our inability to convey the potential risk to the game. The club have already submitted reports to the RFL operational department (Monday, March 11) and will continue to assist them with their investigation into the circumstances around Sunday’s cancellation. We do, however, strongly disagree that the match points should be awarded to York City Knights. Rochdale Hornets believe the correct course of action would be to rearrange the game. Two points should always be won or lost over the course of 80 minutes, and we believe there is sufficient time remaining in the season to work together and play the game that the supporters were excited to be a part of. Finally, Rochdale Hornets will continue to work closely with the stadium management company to ensure we never have a repeat of Sunday and positive discussions have already begun. As a club we have had a disastrous start to the season with two home matches already cancelled through no fault of Rochdale Hornets. As a community we now more than ever need fans to come together to ensure this doesn’t have a severe impact on the club moving forward. Our coaches, players and staff are have started the campaign well and deserve your support. We remain fully committed to competing in the Betfred Championship. On behalf of the Board of Directors. There's a big difference between football and rugby league as the players in rugby league are both part time and paid by appearance rather than as a wage. They also get quite a bit of shirt and programme sponsorship and money from the shop and are paying a reduced rent. They have hardly any staff and not many assets, so although the attendance is only around 500, they cope.

I do enjoy watching rugby league Ninco and agree the pay structure is very different, I would have actively watched and supported hornets but for their overall bURY approach to finance, and the fact they have effectively ripped the football club off on more than 1 occasion. There are many rumours re hornets being helped out by those in political power locally, who wanted hornets to succeed, and whilst I would not rush to confirm these rumours, I would not say they would peter out in the near future. I honestly can’t see how it can ever succeed, on or off the pitch, without paying players to train. They will be on expenses as well as match fees etc, stewards are still needed, referees and touch judges need paying, staff need paying, bills and rent need paying. I would say hornets long term future is reliant on getting a very good relationship with the football club, maybe if they did that a joint season ticket would work, although hornets do have a hell of a lot of bridge building to do to get the vast majority even neutral, let alone supporting them. Even after Sunday’s match postponement, some blamed the football club, it appears that’s not the case, but then I agree that the pitch problems, whilst not helped by hornets, are not caused by them.

Hornets game called off?? (n/t) on 09:14 - Mar 13 with 1882 views | EllDale | Back to the CEO's statement; this might be pedantic but I can't stand it when people who should know better refer to games being cancelled. Postponed is the correct word. Cancelled means that they won't be rescheduled. Knowing the RFL as I do from personal experience I can't see them awarding points for a postponed game though as this sets a precedent which could come back to haunt them. I can see Hornets getting a sizeable bill for travelling expenses incurred however which presumably they would pass onto their landlords.

That's what I expect to happen. A precedent has already been set when Newcastle travelled down to South Wales for a Challenge Cup Tie only to find there was no doctor in the stadium. Having a doctor in attendance is mandatory in semi pro Rugby League so the game had to be abandoned and played at a later date. As I understand it talks are already underway between the Dale, Hornets and York on the issue. [Post edited 13 Mar 2019 12:42]

Yes, but the Hornets company that caused the majority of the problems folded and a new company was set up with different directors. Until the Dale board publicly state that the current company is not paying it's way, we have to assume that they are, and much as I don't like how the previous company did business, Dale survived, and I am sure that there were a lot of smaller businesses that were owed money, who would have been hit bad, but unfortunately that is how liquidation is done, and we are fortunate in a sense that the struggles of the first company led to us being able to buy back the stadium.
