We short of knew... QPR confirm McClaren appointment - Columnght on 18:51 - May 18 with 5009 views | HamsofMickLeach | First time poster and a bit of an armchair fan so be gentle on me. I have been a fan though for over 40 years (OK league cup winning season). In 1969 my Dad took me to see QPR vs Leeds - over 30k people in Loftus Road. The Loft was so packed that kids like me, then 9, were passed to the front to sit on the grass. It was, still i think the best game I have ever seen. We lost unluckily 0-1 to mightly Leeds but matched them through the game. But sitting on the touchline the one memory i still carry forward was the size of the players’ legs -particualrly for some reason Micky Leach - that feeling of inadequacy still taunts me... But to the point. I’m pretty comfortable with Schteeve, I loved Ollie - his passion, his love of the club - and he did great stuff bringing youngsters on, perhaps partially by necessity. But his constant changes of pattern and personel didn’t help our season (though I doubt it harmed it too much either tbh - it was always going to be mid-table). McClaren’s recent failures may help dampen the normal man@gerial ego and help him fit into the current mangament/coaching structure and do what he does best -coach. BTW I am in the Far East now -a few days back on BBC World tbe 2nd story was our Tone apologising for issuing a statement of support for the last Malaysian president - he said he was forced to and regrets it - I bet he does. Sounds like a pre-emptive attempt to stop getting associated with the finances of the old regime. Final point - Clive thanks for all you work on this site including excellent articles and reports. It is this, more that anything else, that has rekindled my active interest in QPR - I’m even seriously considering a season ticket for the first time. Keep it up mate - I know sometimes it is a thankless task. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Having spent last season telling critics of Holloway to go and support somebody else and denouncing them as ‘not proper fans’ I do hope you’re not going to be a massive fcking hypocrite and hound the new guy and anybody who says anything nice about him all season.

I could not possibly be as nasty as the Olly haters were, win lose or draw. I don't see this as being a better option. time will tell but I have no confidence in this appointment. I was told everyone is entitled to their opinion right? well that's mine. [Post edited 18 May 2018 19:20]

Telling people to go and support somebody else, or that they’re not proper QPR fans, simply for holding a different opinion from yours on the manager is pretty low. Like I say, don’t be a massive hypocrite now just because you don’t like the new guy.

Link to where I said go support someone else If I did it was in response to their belief we are a bigger club and should be doing better while ignoring the facts that the club is on it's knees... something you have tried to say a number of times. A new manager doesn't change that. [Post edited 18 May 2018 19:25]

Like those that gave their full support to Olly, not! and slatted me for supporting him? It's not just about McClaren I don't except that this is a good appointment or even an upward one by the owners and I would definitely say they will yet again be wanting someone else within a year. Who is going to be happy now if we are still mid-table next season, not the owners, not the fans that think we should be in the playoffs. I notice when asked, he did not say himself what his league aspirations were but you can bet your arse the owners won't be happy with mid-table. and round and round we go again.

It's fecking reality. something the club owners and many fans don't get. Still, I'll choke on the humble pie if I'm proved wrong and join you all at Wembley this time next year

Totally missing my point. When you like the manager, anybody who doesn’t is attacked. When you don’t like the manager, you attack anybody who does. That’s poor IMO.

McClaren's been given a two year contract, which effectively means he'll be assessed next summer, then extended or let go. But arguably that's a sensible way of moving forward. A longer contract entails the risk of paying someone off if things don't work out. As has frequently been pointed out, we don't have money to burn anymore. I'd imagine specific goals have, or will be, set – points, goals, chances, etc. – which the team will have to meet. That seems fair. It would be more worrying if SMc had been given a three or four year contract. I read yesterday, for example, that David Moyes was still being paid by Manchester Utd. He's had – and lost – three different jobs since then. That's the type of mistake we can't afford anymore.

No I think you are missing my point. I defended Olly and I'm not going to apologize for that. he fulfilled his remit. IMO he has been replaced by someone no better. That's poor by the club IMO.

His 2 years but also the cost of sacking IH a year early, still amounts to 3 years wages. Burning money they don't have again.

Just because someone has a three year contract doesn't mean that they will get two years payoff if they are sacked after one year, that is all in the detail of the contract. There is generally a termination clause on both sides. I would agree though that McClaren should be assessed next summer (hoping that he gets that far), just as Ollie was this year.

True, I didn't mean to suggest they'd get full salary. Just that shorter contracts mean the pay-off will be less than for longer ones.
