Swansea City linked to World Cup ace Alexander Mejia 18:56 - Dec 17 with 1729 views | thomasJack | SWANSEA City are being linked with a January move for World Cup star Alexander Mejia. The 26-year-old midfielder has revealed that he is set to leave current club Atletico Nacional, having spoken to more than one European club. And there are suggestions that Colombian international Mejia is on his way to Wales in a deal which could be worth around £2.5 million. Mejia made his name with Colombian side Deportes Quindio before joining Nacional, one of the biggest clubs in his homeland, in 2012. He has won a succession of titles with his current team and wears the captain’s armband. His international debut came two years ago and he has since been a regular for his country, playing his part as Colombia reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Swansea boss Garry Monk has recently admitted that the club have watched Exeter’s Matt Grimes as they consider strengthening their midfield options. Ki Sung-Yueng, a regular in that position this season, will be absent for much of January because he will be with South Korea at the Asian Cup, while fellow midfield man Tom Carroll is due to return to Spurs when his loan spell finishes at the end of the season. Swansea City linked to World Cup ace Alexander Mejia on 19:39 - Dec 17 with 1611 views | KingsJack | Interesting that the only report of this is coming from the Evening Post. Getting linked to a player like this usually does the rounds before getting that far. Less likely to be an opportunistic agent sowing seeds for a high profile move which is usually the case when stories like this break on Sky Sports News or a tabloid. A Defensive Midfielder, played in 4 of Colombia's 5 World Cup matches, captain for his club... could be a fantastic signing. Here's a little bio taken from the FIFA World Cup 2014 website: "Though he only came into the Colombia side in June 2012 for the back-to-back qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador, there seems little doubt that Alexander Mejia has a bright international future ahead of him. Now 25, Mejia is a defensive midfielder whose mere presence on the pitch is a source of reassurance for his club and country. A linchpin noted for his ability to tidy up mistakes, rob possession and track down and pressurise opponents, he is also a composed presence on the ball, capable of triggering attacks and playing in team-mates. A leader on and off the pitch, he wears the captain’s armband for Atletico Nacional, with whom he has already won a number of trophies since his arrival in 2012. Prior to that he ran out for Once Caldas and Deportes Quindio, where he made his first-team debut in 2005. Mejia hails from Barranquilla, the national team’s fortress in the qualifiers for Brazil 2014 and where he made two of the five appearances he enjoyed in the competition. Since that debut against the Peruvians, he has been a regular presence in Jose Pekerman’s squads and is anxious to continue gaining experience and fulfil his rich promise." | | | |
