The return of ‘Gilet-Jaune’ Eustace…. The man has a ‘vested’ interest in QPR

Did Nardi Cost us the point?
at 20:15 13 Feb 2025

It’s clear that Nardi is being targeted/blocked off at corners and needs some of our blockers around him to stop that.

He also needs to work on catching and/or punching crosses.

But he’s saved us plenty of times with many great stops, some amazing doubles and at least one treble.

A perfect keeper wouldn’t be at QPR.

I hope we can improve his weaker points as we have with many others because overall, he’s saved us a lot of goals and points this year.

Plus he can dance and sing along with Silver Linings.

Another New Signing?

You say we’ve signed someone else ?
But they can’t play until next year like the others ?
That’s really special.

If someone buys Varane it will be because he fits that managers system and has players around him that maximise his skillset.

We are clearly not there yet and it feels like we have lost some of the collective benefit of what tried the season around by fiddling with the midfield several times.

Varane, Field and Morgan was working quite well for a while….why not play the same three players together again ?

50 shades of Smyth ?

Can’t throw the ball if your hands are in restraints.

Paul Smyth's long throw...
at 20:14 10 Feb 2025

It’s 100% better than some of our other throw-ins that often end up creating a breakaway attack for the opposition…

I’m pretty sure we could improve it by simply using Jimmy as a decoy though. Everyone knows he’s the target so why not switch it occasionally.

Or use the assumption of a long throw to go short and cross the ball in, like we do on short corners - ok, maybe not that option then.

However you see it, I think we miss it when we don’t use it and it’s become another useful set piece.

Back to the subject of corners, we also complain when we hit the first man from a corner, but as long as it’s our man we sometimes manage to score ! So, maybe send more of our players towards the ball - we were doing that much more earlier in the season but have stopped attacking the near post for a flick or an attempt.

He reminds me of a high mileage diesel engine in a 1980s German saloon.

It probably won’t pass many performance tests, makes a lot of smoke and clunks every time there’s a great change but it’ll still get where you are going eventually.

There’s also a distinct possibility it could run for several years to come if it’s well maintained and driven responsibly.

Maybe best used on the Autopista at a more comfortable speed than shredding corners or drifting.

Preseason/postseason tour of Gangnam you say ?

No doubt there is money in untapped markets and social media too.

When you see some of the numbers for the videos, I guess it’s safe to assume there’s money driving the loan - for someone. Maybe it’s a way to balance the books differently.

Subs last night....
at 09:01 5 Feb 2025

I wonder if Marti has already decided who his like for like subs are and that Kolli is more likely to replace someone like Chair than Frey.

On Kolli’s departure, I didn’t see it but I did notice than Ashby joined in with a big smile over his face.

He clearly reads the game well and seems to make good decisions.

I suspect that Southampton don’t want to traumatise the guy too much this season and build his confidence elsewhere. Thinking back to Rob Dickie’s latter days with us.

Better subs, better bench and better decisions with Marti back at the game again. Colback is really much better in the sub role, as long as he doesn’t lose his head and that was a very well controlled finish.

I don’t think we’ve always got it right but yesterday, that was a more enjoyable watch because of the planning, the decisions and their timing.

Maybe having the flu gives you more time to ‘work from home’ and think through the next game because it looked like we had the right plan and system for Blackburn and the right subs too.

No reason why we can’t beat the teams above us in the run in and we should go for it. The ones below may prove a little trickier though, as they usually do, especially when fighting for survival.

I believe that he was on the bench BUT no one noticed because he had that invisible cloak on again - just like when he’s in the pitch !

More seriously, the bench is now strong enough that he wouldn’t justify a place even if it was in his chosen position.

What we do with next is the biggest dilemma and we need to task whoever found Dozzell a new home with this job as full time activity.

Miracles can happen.
