Commitment to Human Rights Act may mean IRA terrorists are paid damages
at 15:47 15 Jan 2025

The law bearing on this topic is complex and may be further contested. It seems that Starmer is exploring other ways to block civil proceedings in pursuit of compensation, and which had been prohibited by the Legacy Act in a way that the NI High Court ruled was incompatible with the Windsor Agreement and the ECHR. It isn't yet clear that this court judgement will set a principle on this matter that cannot be overturned. This is the Policy Exchange's take on the judgement.

Chance after chance to walk away and stick with the status quo, but the Starmer/Lammy/Powell Brains Trust ploughs on.

So is the best way forward to amend the HRA rather than the Northern Ireland Troubles Act?

Yes, I thought that. I don't deny that McLaughlin's display was awful, but the problems centred on poor distribution and an error of judgement when he thought he could reach a through ball. His shot stopping was actually okay. As I said on another thread I wonder if the problem is the lack of realistic games as opposed to training sessions. I don't think he had played a competitive game since his arrival in Swansea.

So the public concern is just a "racist dog whistle"? Am I alone in being sickened to hear the morally-bankrupt narrative that led to years of suffering for thousands of disadvantaged white girls being repeated after all that has happened? If there is racism it is the racism of the criminals who consider those girls to be trash because they are white.

Government plans to repeal sections of the Northern Ireland Troubles Act 2023 may mean that IRA members can claim damages for internment paid by the tax payer. Experts say this could cost us millions.

'Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland Secretary, said that the decision to repeal the law underlined “the Government’s absolute commitment to the Human Rights Act”.'

There is now a contradictory report. Could sanity prevail? Hard to predict what will happen given the ministerial wobbles in Westminster.

Perhaps we would be in a better place now if Monk had been frozen out following his shenanigans with Laudrup.

There are strong rumours that the Government will sign off a deal with Mauritius tomorrow, in its haste to get its way before Trump's inauguration. That seems unforgivably wrong-headed and gets the UK's relationship with the incoming US administration off to the worse possible start. The accumulation of bad decisions is going to cost this country a great deal of money over many years.

A Bristol Rovers fan who bought a snappy number plate from the DVLC 27 years ago has had it withdrawn by the DVLA after somebody claimed that it was racially offensive. The most obvious reading of the number was "number one for the Gas" (N14GAS). I must say I am scratching my head, as the actual reg seems so far from the "N" word. As we've seen with buildings and statues, Bristol is right up there when it comes to people looking to be offended.

There is something in that. We all have to adjust to how things change as we age. I am not talking about expected dates with the female film star of the moment or $800K payouts, but you must be careful not to over-estimate your chances with younger members of the opposite sex.

Not exactly correct. Asylum seekers are in most cases in the UK unlawfully, either because of their mode of entry or because they have overstayed their leave to remain in the country. However, in line with our obligations under the UN Refugee Convention, we undertake not to impose a penalty for the illegal action until the asylum application is processed. If the application is granted then no penalty is imposed. In the event that the claim for asylum is denied, we are legally able to impose a penalty, but in practice do not generally do so.

Leaving KFC aside. it is simply not true that all animals slaughtered with Halal methods are pre-stunned, and indeed current UK legislation does permit Halal or Shechita (Kosher) religious slaughter. Based on Food Standard Agency figures, the RSPCA states that around 30 million animals were killed without pre-stunning in 2024 in the UK. I can't see why somebody would make this argument when the evidence is very easy to find, but this poster seems a good example of how ideology makes some ignore what is an everyday reality - whether this concerns Halal slaughter or the extent of the rape gang problem.

So Who Would You Like To See In Charge ?

Keith made the interesting remark that: "The only calamity apparently was choosing McGloughlin (sic) who shouldn’t have been on the pitch or near the squad but is allegedly a superb keeper in training." I'd imagine the last bit may be true. McLaughlin's nightmare performance was to do with positioning on one through ball and distribution rather than shot stopping. He actually made a few tidy saves. I wondered if his problem was the step up from training to real games, where there is a more intense press and unfamiliar attackers. We don't really have any second-string games in which he will have played.
