He was a truly great player who nearly stood between two major English achievements: England v Portugal in the World Cup semi-final 1966 and Man Utd becoming the first English club to win the European Cup against Benfica 1968, both at Wembley of course.

Whenever he got the ball in the World Cup semi, England fans all over the country just held their breath because he could produce goals out of nowhere. He scored from the spot to make it 2-1 and left the field hugging our keeper Gordon Banks - a true gentleman too.

He very nearly made it 2-1 late on in normal time v Man U with a blast from the edge of the area that almost knocked Alex Stepney over the line.

RIP

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport
