Firstly id like to start of by saying what a magnificent game of football that was between, IMO, two of the best teams in the division! I think Keith Hill has assembled a very good squad with some brilliant shrude signings! The lad hogan up front was a constant threat, cannot believe hes come from the non league, ran ryan edwards all over!!
Was a breath of fresh air once Liam cooper came on (Our first choice centre back), he dealt with hogan much better than the other two centre backs did and i was happy to see the back of hogan once he went off!

I thought youre wingers looked very good aswell, caused our full backs endless problems and they were very direct!

I think a draw was definitely a fair result today, albeit two extremely dubious penalty decisions! I have no idea whether the second one was correct or not, but i know for a fact that the first one was outside the box as ive seen highlights since, but hey ho, you win some you lose some! Expect you to be challenging the play offs come the end of the season!

Good luck for the rest of the season (Apart from the return fixture at our place;))
Would be interested to here your views on our style of play, best/worst performers...

Hulk Hogan could run Ryan Edwards all over.

Gary Roberts was ace, Richards was Richards and the archetypal centre forward in Division 4. Ryan is good, Morsy less so. Talbot still isn't a full back and Tommy Lee probably wished Jason Kennedy was still at Dale and on pens.

Thanks for your comments. I dont have the patience to start disecting the game at this time of night but have to inform you both penalties where nailed on so that ones sorted out (I had a good view).

Regarding your own team i think promotion is well within your grasp. At times the way you knocked the ball around and the movement off the ball was good to watch. Any Chesterfield fans who knock their team after todays display need to keep in mind that they where up against a half decent team in Rochdale and its testement to how well you played that you managed to glean a point out of the game, many visiting sides would have capitulated.

I enjoyed watching the Spireites at times today, they played some good football.

Expect every striker to run Ryan Edwards all over the place, Gary Roberts was excellent as expected and is far too good for this league, thought you played some excellent football at times, the best team at Spotland since Sheffield United a couple of years ago. Would be surprised if you don't win the league.

Days like this one weren't supposed to happen to Rochdale.

in all fairness, edwards has been brilliant so far for us, bar this game! he is our fourth choice centre back at the end of the day so hes more than likely going to get bullied every now and then!

Before the mad 5 minute spell with the two penalties I thought you looked excellent, controlling the game perfectly and ran the game like the home side. Having said that it was also very obvious how your team seemed to lose their head very quickly after the equiliser, and when put under pressure almost folded a couple of times, you had Tommy Lee to thank you didn't concede a second before half time from Vincentis strike.

I thought after the penalty we more than matched you, and the game was on a knife edge for long periods, the last 10 or so minutes belonging to you. We witnessed two teams trying to play the game the right way, I thought it was an excellent match up, which was, at times spoiled by a fussy referee. The first penalty having looked at it again looked nailed on, the second was more of a penalty than I thought at the time.

You should go up automatically looking at your squad depth, but i would wonder how much of a loss Roberts would be if he were to get injured, as everything seemed to go through him, best of luck.

I think you're a very good side and you'll be no doubt be there or thereabouts. We got lucky with the penalties no doubt about that. I think one potential problem you may have is that your best players are your experienced players and, whilst they were excellent first half, they definitely tired in the second half. You could tell we were the younger and fitter team and that helped get us back in to, and have the lion's share of, the second half.

You've got enough class though.

Chesterfield have got a really good squad and for me will be the Champions.

This piece on sky from just before the season starts is worrying for them though:

I wonder how many chairmen of other clubs chasing promotion over the last few years have said "Don't worry about the debts, we'll deal with it." Stockport? Luton? Rushden & Diamonds?

Tangled up in blue.

The first penalty was a definate and even the second was more than 50/50. I dont think we got lucky.

As a game of football, it was superior to many we witnessed during our spell in L1 and on the evidence it won't be long before we're meeting up in that league.

Whilst we weren't "lucky" to get the pens, up to that point you were dominant and my thoughts were "OK lets just get this over with because we won't be meeting another side with so much class this season" and I'd definitely have settled for a point.

But with Keith Hill back in charge, such thoughts are premature. We'll progress as a unit as the season goes on, so really looking forward to renewing the contest at your place in January.

We will also add to the squad as the season progresses which you would think would make us stronger, if Hilly can bring in the right 2 or 3 players then the future looks good.

Hilly has done in one pre-season something which Eyre and Coleman both failed to do over a couple of seasons. We now have a team that the fans are proud to identify themselves with, a team that conducts itself in the right manner.

Reminded me of the 2-2 draw vs. Brighton in our first season in L1.

Two good teams trying to play football in the right way making for a great game, with the away side clearly having that bit of quality about them with them being one of the favourites for promotion, but with us matching them for endeavour and having our own spells of dominance and showing our quality in patches too.

Tangled up in blue.

Well impressed with your team ODL.........except for that carthorse Humphries. He is carrying a lot of timber......is he eating the meals of the scrawny guy who came on a sub for Roberts?

The latter was easily bullied off the ball by our lads.

Great game though. Well done

Richards is our oldest player bar richie humphreys (Who is just playing as cover while smith regains full match fitness) and he is only 31 ?
I know for a fact that for a lot of the players in our team this has been there toughest pre season so far so they should be extremely fit, which i thought showed when we were piling on the pressure in the last 10 minutes!

Had the foul been inside the box it would have been a penalty, however, having seen the replay it was quite clearly outside and therefore you did get lucky with the decision and it obviously had a large bearing on the game.

However, no disgrace in drawing at Spotland and it sounds like it was a great advert for L2 with both teams trying to play the right way.

We really have nothing to worry about in terms of the debts, all they are are repayments of loans for when we built the new stadium, and the reason we are over budget is because of one player which is sam hird on the transfer list! As soon as we get his 2.5k a week wage of the wage bill, that 130k we are over will be eradicated!

We also make money every year due to our exceptional corporate side of the club, hopefully the debt will be slashed in the near future

Believe it or not, that is not timber, he is actually in brilliant shape for probably the first time since his sheffield wednesday playing days! Although i agree he is our weak link currently, but he is only back up until we get our best defence back to full fitness!

Lets agree to disagree then, myself and the linesman had the perfect view, i didnt think it was even in doubt from what i witnessed. Unlike one awarded against us at Saltergate a couple of seasons ago

Cheers, completely agree.

On the subject of penalties, I remember Conlon scoring a couple at Saltergate in April 2010, the first of which was a bit dubious.

Agree, no one really wants a football club to be in debt. However the investment we made was necessary to move the club forward and hopefully has / is being made in the right areas. New ground, improved training facilities, "CFC village" for our kids to live in ( as well as the squad.

The debts we have are based on structured repayments made over 10-15 years to Dave Allen, the local council and a couple of other small creditors. Last financial year we turned a £100k profit at the same time as making those repayments. Being c.130k over budget should equate to a roughly break even season for us (at the same time as paying back our debts). As the other poster points out that is the salary of Sam Hird who we are looking to offload.

So in summary, no I don't think anyone can be comfortable with debt, but in reality it is the cheapest form of equity, most businesses in the UK are leveraged and it was the only option open to us to move the club forward. With the majority of debt owed to our chairman who has also made significant equity investments in the club we shouldn't find ourselves in a situation with our major investor walking away.

Hopefully we are making investments in the "right" areas in developing the clubs commercial infrastructure, community footprint (new community facility and cafe in east stand) and kids facilities without going completely bananas on wages (operating within 55% turnover limit, no transfer monies paid). This means our turnover has tripled (I think) since we moved to the new stadium which obviously gives us much more room to manoeuvre with squad investment with the 55% cap rule.

At any rate it's refreshing to have both sets of fans paying compliment to what sounded like an excellent game of football (I was on holiday :( )

Not a clue, but i know its much lower than it was at swindon, but because we offered him a long term deal (3 years) it makes up for the lower wage

I honestly don't think anyone knows. Nothing like he was on at Swindon. We went in for Alan Navarro from Swindon before we went for Roberts but were unwilling to sign him because of high wage demands. He would have been on less than Roberts at Swindon.

Interesting quote from Paul Cook in close season that we would not be paying high basic wages but incentivising players through higher appearance fees etc. I have no idea if this has happened or not.

I think Dave Allen announced our playing budget was set at £1.4mfor this season (or something along those lines) but we do appear to have been able to attract a lot of players who you would imagine are on a fair whack.

No idea what Ian Evatt is on either but I think that was more to do with moving closer to home and returning to a former club that he enjoyed.

Looking forward to us actually playing decent centre backs (Evatt and Cooper) when fully fit versus Hird and Edwards who are more of a back up.
