It's not gone unnoticed on this forum by some plus myself, how poorly Australia have performed in these Olympics compared to recent games. For a country that prides itself on sport and the benefits of partaking in sport, this must seem a bitter blow to them. Coming second is not good enough. Even New Zealand have won more gold medals so far than them and that to an Aussie must hurt.
So why has this happened? Why are all the swarthy, super tanned,blond haired Bradley's and Bindy's we all so admire or are supposed to admire, performing with feet of clay? Is it because they hate the British weather or have their supplies of Fosters lager been contaminated?
Can any R's fans now residing in Oz throw a light on this?

Its quite simple. For a long time Australia was almost the only nation in the world to have a heavily funded and advanced sporting program. As a result they punched well above their weight but it really was all about the funding.
Now other countries are doing it, including Britain, and the results are there for all to see. They are simply getting closer to where a developed country with a population of around 20 million might expect to be.

But it's remarkable though isn't it how the Aussies transformed themselves into a sporting nation(especially in the pool)what with having all those balls and chains attached?

I haven't read all the other posts as i guess many have said what i'm about to say.
I have NEVER enjoyed living in Perth more than right now. The media over here is more biased than any other country in the world. They are convinced that they have been hard done by, that it's not their fault, that other teams are over achieving, that the wind was wrong, that they didn't get enough sleep the night before, that they have had to travel too far, etc etc etc. Honestly, it's pathetic.
The coverage this week has dropped off no end, they are not interested now at all, its all GayFL and Rugby league. They are SO begrudging with any compliments that they give us, case in point when we beat them in the quad rowing, it was laughable how they reported us as basically winning because of luck.

From todays Metro (weekend specials during the Olympics)
'An AustralianTV channel has refused to show how many medals New Zealand has won - as it is doing better than them. Channel 9, the country's official Olympic broadcaster cuts it's Antipodean neighbour from a medal table after the Kiwis crept into tenth place compared to Australias 19th. It later admitted the Aussies did not want to be reminded of New Zealand's success.
Channel 9 has been slated for it's poor Games coverage so far. More than 105,000 viewers have signed a petition calling for the station to show sports beyond swimming, interviews of swimming and analysis of swimming'. |  | | |
