Answer my own question, yes it was...
When compared to the top four teams...
"The main area where Joey Barton lets himself down though compared to the other midfielders is his pass completion percentage. Barton’s passes find the other player only 68.03% of the time which is an astonishing 17.62% below his nearest competitor Aaron Ramsey."
When compared to the bottom four teams... "Barton again falls short in the terms of successful passes to his teammates as he is a whopping 15.15% behind his closest rival Reo-Coker and 18.29% behind McCarthy who scored highest in this comparison."

I would have loved to see what Faulins stats would have looked like compared to that lot had he been fit all season.
Faurlin was actually still top of the 'successful tackles made' league at the end of March, two and a half months after he'd been ruled out for the season.

Yeah they would have been brilliant, we all know he topped the tackles stat in the entire league even weeks after his injury. Part of me is pleased now especially as we stayed up as think it would have been very tough to keep him this summer if he had maintained his level.
I know TF and Hughes have been good to keep our better players but to be fair Hughes has never had Faurlin or been able to see what he does first hand so a big fee would have been hard to ignore with all these new options!

Fair enough mate - pleased to know I not always on my own.
I have an unfair prejudice against Mackie cos I associate him with the Warnock puffer school of football. Felt we wouldn't have gone up if chance hadn't granted us Routledge instead.
He has more than earnt his place since then. A great team player and I genuinely wish him the best.
Barton - hmmm - don't like him but I think he could be good for us. Also HATED the booing last season, I would never boo a Rangers player and I resented the idiots who did. Made me defensive. Funnily it's not his passing I worry about it's his total lack of pace and agility.

Once Faurlin is back fit we're going to have a blinding team this season.

Barton did his best work for Newcastle when he was out on the right side of midfield, but then, that kind of makes sense to me because when you're there it limits your passing choice and forces you to play to players at specific angles.
The long ball forward, the diagonal, is also usually easier to play from out wide, and when you've a big striker like Andy Carroll to aim for, it also makes your success rate of potentially reaching him with your ball higher.
Seeing him at close quarters has allowed me to make up my own mind though. I have to say I've been really surprised and somewhat shocked at how poor he's been, given his perceived pedigree and experience. But he's not the only one. I expected far, far more and think the main problems is the lack of basics and decision making that makes for good football players.
He seldom plays a short passing game and that's his biggest problem. He would be a million times better if he did, because it makes him a much much much more effective player in terms of ball retention and contribution to the side. But he ignores it, and my impression is because he perceives it as too simple and that he should be doing something more sophisticated, missing the whole point of how sophisticated that kind of style and discipline actually is.
The best players out there play the right pass at the right time, whether it's simple or not, but always to put the next man in a better position on the ball. I've rarely seen Barton be able to do that, and at times, he was so central to our play and so poor that he caused the entire system and formation to collapse and implode on itself. A smart footballer also realises that and knows how to change their game to adapt, especially if you're having a bad day. One or two wayward and stray passes, fair enough, but when it's not your day you've got to get to grips with yourself, keep it short and sweet, block build and then become a cog so that you support other players in form when you're not in form.
All of these things, he just doesn't have in his locker. That's why I don't think he has provided value for us. It's nothing about his tweets, or the image for the club, and so on...a bad boy can sometimes help you on the pitch by way of personality and winning mentality, but to do that, you need to have some of the above and demonstrate some nous and he's not really been able to.
Mackie, playing out wide, is somewhat out of the way in terms of structure, so wide players tend to be able to make more mistakes, but also allowed to because of the position on the pitch is less dangerous than in the middle. It's also a brave position, where a player is asked to take on a man and try and beat him. Lots of players struggle to do that, even in the Premier League. If you watch them, they can't beat a man or don't believe in themselves, or they always use passing and movement to try and progress up the pitch without actually taking someone on. Mackie will just keep going at you time and time again, never afraid to have another go and that's a real admirable trait. He has his flaws, and boy does he have a lot, but he's proven that even with those flaws everything else in his game actually makes him effective and have a positive impact. And he never tried to pretend that he's anything but himself and that's also a quality that's often overlooked. He makes no bones about who he is, where he's come from or what his level is - he just goes out there to give his all and I bleeding well love him for it.
Great post .I believe the player you describe as the 'best out there' is Scholes and to a lesser extent (FOR NOW) Faurlin. Keep it simple and look sublime.

Routledge was indeed key, but the way Mackie started the season you could say Rouledge wouldn't have been needed had he stayed fit all season.
Not sure though, there's few better in the Championship than Routledge.

Back to Hoilett a moment does anybody know if he takes corners/free kicks etc? Ours have been pretty shocking so far and i'd love it if one of the new boys was a set piece specialist. I know JH didnt take them for BBurn but that might be just cos MGP was so good

I can see where your coming from with the way fans react to Barton unfairly. I remember having to put up with some thick pillock at the Everton game who was slagging Barton off for a corner and a free-kick despite the fact that Akos took both.
You start to wonder if Barton could ever get a fair rating off some fans. I still prefer Faulin and Diakite as the partnership this season and Barton as cover at best.

Cheers Jim - makes a nice change!
Also agree Diakite and Faurlin are our two top boys for the CM partnership.
Interesting debate re Mackie and Barton...agree if Joey had stuck to what he was good at ie,winning the ball and moving it on simply and quickly,he would have made life alot easier for himself.Fact is,he has physcological issues he needs help with, and its not just about what he does on the pitch, its his influence in the dressing room, and the effect his behavior has on the club as a whole.
Got so bored with mates/clients asking me about Barton every week...was embaressing.NW making him captain and the dogs bollox probably set the ball rolling,so not entirely his fault, but just dont see him changing, and that why, more than his footballing ability i would love him to move on.

I'm with you in that I think that Jamie is given a way longer leash than others by the Rangers support. He could run down 4 blind alleys but get nothing but applause and encouragement but someone else would run down 2 and get booed. Got to give it to the boy tho .He stuck to it and delivered and was definately pivotal in us staying up..

Wasn't it the Opta stats that said he'd given away more passes than any other player in the Premier league last year? And it's England cap singular.
I thought Barton was a good signing, and I didn't think Mackie would step up to the Premier League. The facts to the contrary are there for all to see.
Opta is crap -- lies, damn lies and statistics -- Barton plays in central midfield and is passing to Mackie/SWP who have no first touch which means he stats are scewed. Fact is, that when Barton was playing well, he was playing a neat passing game, that kept the team ticking over, and launching into big tackles aka Aresnal at home.
I would be interested to see how many times Mackie gave the ball away in our final third, when he picked the ball up from our low lying defence or midfield and then did nothing with it. Fact is Mackie scored some goals and thrightened people with his buzzing work rate, but he doesn’t look comfortable in possession and is not a winger.
Mackie is a great asset to the squad. Park is an upgrade as a blustering and hard working winger. I personally think Mackie is a striker, a more lethal version of paul dickov, he really comes alive in the opposition area.
One thing for certain is that he is not a starting winger for an up and coming premiership outfit. Barton has been a decent player for many a mid table premiership football team and showed flashes as to the reason why last season. Whether he is worth all the rest, I'll let Hughes decide...

Hoilett is a fantastic signing and will get the fans of their seats! He has the ability to run with his head up with ball, dribble with both feet and scores goals, can't wait to see him in the hoops.
In relation to Barton I feel he came in and disrespected the players we had thinking he was far superior and he was a major signing for us. He took free kicks and corners (poorly) and didn't raise his own game as he felt no need to. He thought he was glen hoddle trying the glory ball and in the end it all caught up with him.
Thing is if he does wear the shirt again I hope he realises now that he needs to bring greater quality to earn a place. I feel he is capable if he gets yet another chance and he does improve the squad in footballing terms alone.

In all the talk about Mackie's 'technical deficencies' , the one thing that gets overlooked is the fact that he is one of the few natural goal scorers in the squad. Look at the goals that got us to the top of the championship (partic at Ipswich, Derby and Sheff Utd) and last season against Liverpool, Man City, Swansea away, etc. Other than Cisse there is no one else who seems to have that ability to come into the box at the right time and put away chances, certainly out of our attacking midfield selection.

For those who don't know quite how good this kid is on the ball and what kind of vision he has. With Ale, Adel and Dave Jnr's vision and players like Cisse and Zamora to feed through we are properly going to destroy some teams this season.
And this kid can properly finish as well. With both feet.
