The worst UK city for growth? 04:18 - Dec 1 with 2718 viewsAnotherJohn

MSN is featuring a story, recycled from September, about PWC's survey of the best and worst UK cities that I’d missed before. I looked down the best cities list expecting Swansea to be in the top 10, but to my horror we feature as number 1 on the worst cities list.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/the-20-best-and-worst-cities-to-live-in-th

https://www.pwc.co.uk/government-public-sector/good-growth/assets/pdf/good-growt (full report)

The exercise is based on an index developed for PWC’s Framework for Growth research, and our problems seem to include the winding down of traditional industries, the need for city regeneration, serious economic disparities, and lack of affordable housing. Apart from the major impact of the blast furnace closure at Port Talbot, I don’t really recognise the picture, but perhaps I have been misled by the refurbishment of important city buildings and our geographical advantages. Are we really the worst UK city for growth? Apologies if this is old news for some.

If the Westmonster govt had not stolen HS2 money from Wales then we might have better transportation links. Just a thought …..

& how about growth for Swansea & South Wales in general regarding all the other points, or are you harping back to the 20 mph thing again?

You started it.👍

Didn't Westminster offer to pay for a Brynglas bypass.

Let's look at some facts.

To get to Swansea you currently have to drive 40mph across the bridge

From Magor to Tredgar Park you have a 50 mph zone, which you will be very lucky to hit.

Then from Port Talbot to Swansea, once again you are down to 50 mph.

Once in Wales, you have a ridiculous 20 mph speed limit.

& those in power then decide to put a tourism tax on top for those people who decide to come to Wales.

Anyone who thinks investment is coming to South Wales with the current transport issues is a deluded fool.

There was meant to be a new train service running from Carmarthen through to Paddington which would have reduced the travel time. Unfortunately it has been delayed by 3 years due to a lack of carriages.
If they had electrified the line, it might cut travel time to under 2 hours.

95% of the Welsh population would never use the line. The M4 is another story.

Nearly 4,000 deaths a year in Wales due to smoking related illnesses.

98 deaths on Welsh roads in 2023.

One death is one to many. But think where legislation should be and money spent.

The Senedd releases data only for all 20 and 30mph roads combined, hoping us sheep won't notice.

Will Hayward then bends the truth to breaking point.

Why insn't he data published for 20mph roads, roads changed to 20mph and 30mph roads separately? Because it probably does not support the narrative!

Not one of you anti 20mph posters have mentioned anything about the reduction in deaths and serious injuries since the new speed limit was introduced, which I find quite odd.

Well they need to take a look at themselves and ask themselves why Swansea is No1 for being the worst.

The Senedd spending billions on their beloved Capital City who must have everything.

I believe it. For many families money is very very tight as industry is changing and better paid jobs are disappearing. Possibly some should bare this in mind when criticising supporters for not attending games. Imo the biggest drop off in attendees is families, these are the hardest hit with the drop off of well paid jobs in the area.

Whilst some are happy that dirty industries are dying and couldn't careless that families working in dirty industries have/are losing their jobs and livelihoods and possibly even their homes, with their I'm alright Jack and up yours attitudes, unbelievable!

No way a train service could get to London in two hours. The maximum line speed in Wales is 100mph and in most parts is only 70mph.

Unfortunately road deaths rose by 10 in Wales in the last 12 months.
No actual reduction in road deaths in new 20mph areas.

70% of road deaths in Wales are on single carriageways A and B roads.

Last years road deaths were inflated by three tragic accidents involving young drivers which resulted in 12 deaths all outside 20 mph zones.

Only road deaths increased by 10 in Wales year all outside the 20 mph areas. No reported reduction of deaths in 20 mph . Just a few less minor collisions in these areas.

I stood on the North Bank in 1973 when we played Northampton, the attendance was 1,300.
The average home attendance for the 1974/75 season was a shade over 2000.
Those figures are what you call disappointing…innit.

One of the first games I saw at the Vetch was against Newport County, I was in Dynevor School and went a couple of School mates, sadly one of the lads Brian died about 10yrs ago of Asbestosis shocking disease, lovely guy was Brian lost touch with him after we finished school and then met him again out of the blue in the steel works.
