Football aside, one of the biggest stories of the day concerns our esteemed ex chancellor and current Chairman of the Conservative Party and the requirement for him to pay around £5m in back tax and a penalty. His penalty was allegedly set at the highest point of the “careless” range of 30% and allegedly amounts to £1.1m. Some news streams are giving this story prominent cveragevwhile others aren’t. The question is should he be allowed to remain in government or should he resign/be sacked?

Let’s be frank,folks.
Those of us Labour activists see any shortcomings or foul ups as material to use to further denigrate . No Labour activist on here has ever admitted criminal or even anti social behaviour .
They also utterly ignore any positive actions by conservatives
We are choked by class and it’s pretty evident on here

Its got nothing to do with class, I'll speak for my self here and now, I'm no Labour activist [don't think anyone else on here an actual activist either] I don't trust any of them, but this government have been proven to be corrupt, deceitful and down right lairs, the facts speak for themselves. Lester was doing it for 14 years!

He wasn't a public servant though, serving in a Parliamentary Cabinet.

Totally agree.

I’m no Labour activist, in fact I’ve never ever voted for them. What I am though is someone with a decent moral compass who’s always stood up for the right things, done the right thing even when it would have been easier to look the their way - these values were instilled in me by my parents and throughout my formative years and working life.

I also have a low opinion of politicians- I totally agree with you regarding your view of the government who in my opinion are the worst we’ve had. We’ve had numerous examples where the standards have dipped below what’s expected including Partygate, the Patterson business, unlawful proroguing parliament, Covid VIP Lane, Gold Wallpaper, Cummins and Barnard Castle, Chris Pincher, Boris’s £800k “credit facility” BBC appointment, Covid frauds and now Zahawi. Boris has strong inputs in to most if not all the above.
We’ve also had ministerial ethic advisors walk off the job, concerns about Boris awarding a peerage to the son of a former KGB agent and more. It’s outrageous. Can you imagine the out cry there’d be if they didn’t have the majority of the newspapers going out to bat for them.

Maybe no one is defending Zahawi because what he's done is indefensible, unlike your lot, that defend the wonderful Mr Drakeford no matter how badly he runs Wales.

Where have I defended an instance of alleged tax fraud? I haven’t. All you have is whataboutism and I’m genuinely embarrassed for you.

I see an ex Labour MP was in court yesterday for claiming £30,000 in parliamentary expenses to fund his cocaine habit.

O’Mara was long kicked out of the Labour party by the time he allegedly defrauded tax payers of an amount which totals about 0.8% of what Zahawi is accused of avoiding in tax.

Thanks for highlighting the superior moral standards Labour holds itself to compared to the Tories. Labour kicks out the crooks squatting in their ranks while the Tories will make them chancellor of the exchequer.

You fail to point out one was a criminal offence the other paid his tax in full.

To summarise the Zahawi scandal as "he paid his tax in full" is so disingenuous I'm genuinely impressed you had the front to say it.

What Zahawi did was also a criminal offence. That's why he paid a substantial penalty. The scandal is also about him lying about it and threatening journalists who were investigating him with frivolous legal threats.

Morning ohl.

On the probation service thread you said this -

'Good exchange and I thank you You are the only respondent to this grotesque act of mismanagement
It’s always as bad as parole boards guessing the risk of someone being reformed and safe to float amongst us all
We allow this without a squeak

Look at the endless tedious threads on absolute trifia

God help us all

Right now ,we are more upset over a Tory minister avoiding tax , as we all do It’s why people have iSAs .., to avoid tax'.

According to what's been reported he didn't avoid paying the tax which is legal (ISA's). he evaded paying the tax which is illegal. But HMRC have let him off with a fine because they decided he did it 'carelessly' not 'deliberately'.

Posted here because I didn't want to hijack the other thread.

The other only paid his tax in full after he was found out. On being found out he tried to shut up those who outed him with legal threats. That ploy failed which left him with no choice.

He knew he was in the wrong yet he still tried to carry on which to me makes his actions even worse. If it was a genuine mistake he wouldn't have tried to "shut up" the people who caught him and instead gone to the HMRC to pay his dues.

He should be acing criminal charges in my opinion. He is typical of the Bojo type of politician, when caught out simply double down and keep going until it blows over except in Zahawi's case, it didn't blow over and well done to those who sussed him.

JL.
I stand by every word.
Zahari is a crook and unfit for public office
However, to my knowledge he is not a killer nor one who would be a risk to society at large in a safety context .

In other words, he really is a kunt but those who release murderers because they THINK someone is “ safe” are worse

Thanks

Incredible really.
He will resign or be sacked within a week possibly by the weekend .
Sunak stands condemned to as he s supported him.
Unfit for office.
This Govt is now unfit to govern
It’s that simple

I don’t expect any party however to act honourably

Sunak still supports him, he's turning into Bojo Mk2. If Sunak has any common sense he'd have been sacked as soon as it came out.

As it stands Sunak is shaping up to be every bit as bad as Bojo for supporting the unsupportable.

He cant sack him because he is almost certainly compromised on tax himself, some are saying.

There is more as well ….

Twitter asking … Could these ‘unsecured loans’ be from the same Gibraltar account his YouGov shares were deposited in - those ones he and his family ‘do not benefit from’?

£30m in unsecured loans … rightio … 🤐

Twitter is asking a very interesting question, we await the answer, but I’m not sure we’ll get one.

Some of our tax laws are a farce, and I still relieve that taxation was a major driver behind Brexit.

It's not all tory toffs though, it's all rich people who can afford expensive tax lawyers. In some cases those tax lawyers were "consulted" about new tax laws and actually helped to write them which means some of those expensive lawyers know every single loophole...because they put those loopholes in themselves.

With nothing coming through the investigation that Sunak didn’t already know. Handled appallingly. Again.

This in a week the tories have also given us:

- Boris and the BBC money scandal
- Braverman insisting on using the Holocaust to compare immigrants
- Andrew Bridgen (in general)
- Jonathan Gullis making light of the dozens of immigrant children lost from the system.

The election countdown is on an I hope this current crop of appalling human beings are consigned to their highly paid undeserved directorships and away from us.
