It'll drain his battery quicker. Get rid of all unwanted apps. YouTube is very good at showing you how to get rid of loads of unwanted stuff.

I know it's prepaid but you should still have a log in for the provider. They'll be a breakdown of costs on there.

If a browser tab is not active it won't be consuming any data - data is used on downloading. Pages aren't just constantly downloading in the background. If data has been rinsed that quickly the likelihood is video, perhaps when he thought he was on wifi.

TBH pay as you go these days is pretty poor value. Smarty for example do 50GB of data for a tenner on a sim only 30 day rolling contract (you can cancel it anytime) - might be a better solution than PAYG?

The trouble with smartphones is that most apps will run background tasks (such as WhatsApp backups, Google/Apple backups, App Updates, Location Services, Weather widgets, Email, Facebook/Insta/Twitter Status Updates, Notifications etc.) and these will consume data when Wi-Fi isn't available. Unfortunately when you install an app the default setting is to allow background data. If you want to restrict this then you'll need to spend time changing settings. Generally speaking, I tend to turn off notifications for apps I'm not interested in hearing from and setting most of the rest to provide updates only over Wi-Fi. Only the most critical apps have permission to use data in the background. The good news is that this not only restricts background data usage, it also significantly improves battery life. The bad news is every time your son downloads a new app, settings for that app need to be adjusted.

If you can't be bothered with all this faff and your son is happy with his phone then there are plenty of decent SIM card only deals around. PAYG is ok for traditional phones but the plans don't tend to work well for smartphones.

For youngsters I would recommend VOXI. It runs on the Vodafone network and there's no contract (so you can cancel at any time). Plans start from as little as £10 per month for 15GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts. There's also unlimited use of popular social apps like TikTok, Insta, Facebook, Twitter, etc. so using these apps doesn't come out of his data allowance. As a Brucie bonus, they also throw in free cinema tickets from time-to-time. You can monitor the account online and switch plans at any time to suit his usage.

They're running a promotion at the moment where you get 25GB of data plus unlimited calls, texts, social data and video streaming for £12 per month.

Note that this is just my recommendation; other decent SIM only deals are available. However VOXI is tailored to youngsters who tend to be social media and video streaming hungry, and enjoy receiving updates from the world and his wife.

One further thing. Irrespective of who you decide to go with, once signed up ensure that calls from premium rate and international numbers are barred.

A caveat on VOXI though as someone who moved from Vodafone to VOXI, is that they give vodafone traffic priority. My reception became absolute abysmal overnight

That's understandable but you'll pay a hell of a lot more for Vodafone direct and they won't throw in unlimited social or video streaming. It's the same for Virgin Mobile/O2, GiffGaff/O2, Lebara/Vodafone, Tesco/O2, etc.

Personally neither my family nor I have experienced any such problems in 2 years of VOXI usage, and my reception was perfect last night. It's likely that your issue was a generic one rather than linked to traffic management.

In any event my recommendation isn't necessarily right for you because it's tailored to the case in point. The person asking is a parent and the user is a young lad. Youngsters tend to communicate via socials and stream videos rather than making traditional phone calls. They will also spend a lot of time at home where apps will use Wi-Fi over mobile data.

Parents are in the midst of a cost of living crisis and need to find ways to control other expenditure in order to afford energy. Whilst parents are typically driven to providing their child with a mobile phone for security reasons, the reality is that daily usage is likely to be watching the latest dance craze or listening to KSI/Yung Filly/Logan Paul, etc. Given the above, there is little incentive to pay for premium network services. Controlling costs is probably why the OP chose PAYG to begin with; if so cost remains a key factor even if the OP decides to switch to a monthly plan.

Sim Only is a good way to go, also worth looking at your broadband provider.
I have 4 phones on sim only deals, 5 gig of data a month (doubled to 10 gig as my broadband is with BT) with unlimited calls & texts for £32 a month in total which equals £8 a month per sim.

Agreed. However the broadband route may involve tying yourself to a contract (particularly if the SIM deal is packaged with the broadband service).

It's important for the OP to note that SIM-only deals come in various guises. Some are no contract, some are 30 days, others are 12/18-month contracts. I prefer the flexibility of being contract-free but naturally it's up to you.

The general advice for the OP is to go SIM-only. Far more practical and cost-effective for smartphones than PAYG. There's lots of options out there. Only you will understand your exact requirements; a quick internet search will help you decide which is best.

Quick, grab a bear hug whilst my wife Voxi isn't looking.

My Battery started to drain really quickly like there was a Colin Robinson nearby.

I went into settings and realized half the memory could be freed so cleaned that up then I started deleted every app I could find that I knew wasn't part of the operating system then turned of a google newsfeed I didn't know I had...

Had enough of Samsung proper fooked up their phones. I might try LG or go back to the slightly dubious Chinese one next.

*do not cover mic critical ewwor* try it.
