I think the problem is what do you put out if he is shite or homesick?
If you establish a precedent of letting the public know when the problem is something like a knock or international clearance, the public will then expect it whatever the reason. If the reason is related to the player suitability, the club wouldn't be able to comment. But then, even the absence of a comment would have people speculating as to the player's capability. I think the club might take the view that it is best not to comment at all on player's unavailability |
Lots of clubs use "personal reasons" as a reason for player absence that is anything other than injury. I appreciate that then creates its own speculation, but at least the club has issued its position.
It's fine. As I say, I don't think any of us are ever expecting War and Peace here, just a one-liner that acknowledges why the player is missing from action. |  |

If I was a new signing suffering from "personal issues" I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want it broadcast in the public domain. Each to their own, but I'd want support from the club support network, not from the public.
A 'simple' one-liner, especially if citing non-football reasons, would cause even more speculation.
That is not to say that Dooley is suffering from "personal issues". I don't know why he hasn't featured in pre-season but then I don't feel the need to know why either.

Having Googled Dooley (didn't know what he looked like), I think him and Delaney were on the rowing machine Saturday morning at the gym. The injured players seemed to often go to the gym Saturday mornings last season, so it does make sense they both have a knock but perhaps not injuries to worry about long-term (no science in that- I'm purely basing that on the fact they were going pretty quickly!). |  | | |
