Che Adams Wanted By Wolves
Monday, 3rd Jul 2023 11:33

One player who hasn't been mentioned much by the rumour mill so far is Che Adams, but this is all set to change with media reports suggesting that Wolverhampton Wanderers could be about to open the bidding war for the striker.

Che Adams is into the last year of his contract at St Mary's and this could be a key factor in Saints entertaining offers from other clubs, whilst Adams did not enjoy a particularly great season in 2022/23, it was still better than most of his fellow team mates and since joining Southampton from Birmingham City in 2019 he has established himself both in the Premier League and also on the International stage with Scotland.

Saints signed him four years ago for around about £15 million and according to Transfermarkt his current value is around £18-20 million.

But as he is in the final year of his contract, he represents a potential bargain buy for a fee a little less than that and he is sure to be in demand over the summer.

The first in the line seem to be Wolverhampton Wanderers according to footballleagueworld.co.uk.

They quote the BBC West Midland's reporter Daz Hale as saying that "Wolves are one of a number of Premier League clubs who are keen on Southampton striker Che Adams.”

They go on to claim that Wanderers will target players in the £8-15 Million transfer fee bracket, that seems to indicate that they feel that Southampton will have to accept less than Adams current market value or risk losing him for free next summer.

Adams has been linked with other clubs over the last year, notably Leeds, but their relegation alongside Saints perhaps rules a move to Elland Road out of the question.

Just who the number of Premier League clubs chasing Adams alongside Wolves, is not revealed, but I have heard Everton mentioned and even Bournemouth, you would expect a few of the bottom half clubs to be interested in a player with four years Premier League experience under his belt to be in high demand at £15 million or under.

He is a workhorse, would be an asset alongside a reliable goal scorer and will chip in the odd goal himself. However I'm not sure we will hold on to him as his contract expires. So I think we should cash in on him now and let Ballard have a go.

Since we signed him we have carried a Championship level striker, now we are actually in the championship now is probably the time and sign a young hopeful from League 1?

Who knows what transfer activity is in the pipeline, at the moment it seems heavily weighted towards players leaving rather than joining the club and that is a bit deflating.
If Wolves have expressed interest in Adams I'd have hoped that Conor Coady would have been offered the opportunity to move to us rather than Leicester. Easy move for Coady though, he probably doesn't even need to relocate his family.

Few could deny that Che always gives 100% and takes the knocks and bangs up front, but it is clear that he hasn't reached the giddy heights of scoring as he did in his previous clubs. ¨
It may not be entirely his fault that he hasn't scored more. He hasn't had a regular partner up front in a team that was poor from the beginning, and as our no.1 striker we expect goals and lots of them. He may find that another club will be able to exploit his obvious skills and the fact that he has maintained a regular spot in the Scotland squad can do no harm in our efforts to get a good deal when he eventually moves.
With a year left on his contract we will do well to recover the fee when we bought him for.

I think Che will go and struggle at another lower half club - Wolves might well be fighting relegation next season. Shame because I think a front six of Che, Adam Armstrong, Sulimana, Tella, Mara and Ballard would do well in the Championship especially if we can keep Alcarez.

We don't know what Che might have achieved if he'd had a partner up front such as McGinn or even Dykes as he does in the Scottish set-up. I think we should keep him.

Wolves obviously weren’t watching when he missed an open goal against them from inside the 6 yard box.
