Here's the clip of the finish - incredible ride from Cav, I love the way he bumps and hustles and out-muscles his way to the front, pushing it right to the max, all the way to the line....

An added twist to the Turkey Austria game, Merih Demiral is apparently under investigation by Uefa after his goal celebration. I had a read about the party he supports, the Turkish 'Nationalist Movement Party', not exactly a pleasant bunch.

Here's what happened, from the BBC:

"The Al-Ahli defender celebrated his second goal with a 'wolf salute', a gesture associated with the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves that are linked with Turkey's ruling coalition party the National Movement Party.

Demiral said the salute, which is banned in Austria and France, was pre-planned in case he scored.

"I had a goal celebration in mind, which I did," said Demiral.

"I am very proud because I am a Turk, therefore after the goal I felt it deeply and I wanted to do it, and I am very happy about doing it."

That, if I may say so, is a disingenuous response. Where did I say I wanted unfunded tax cuts? You're putting words into my mouth.

Misrepresenting what people have said seems to have been a theme in this thread, and you have form on this, regarding the disgraceful accusation you made about SheffieldHoop.

I will do as I said, tomorrow, and write: 'none of the above' on the ballot paper.

Well yes, Baz, if instating PR was the only issue, I might vote for them.

But to answer your question, I disagree with most of their policies as outlined in their manifesto, including, but not limited to, those on the economy (wishy-washy and uninspiring), energy (dangerously naive), green issues/climate (ditto) and immigration. They're far too close to the Greens on most of these for my liking.

I'd even consider voting Labour if they weren't in hock to all sorts of causes I disagree with, which I have outlined earlier in this thread. Plus they have an ignorant loudmouth as deputy leader. From 1979 to 1997 I voted Labour in every election, but they were a very different party in those days.

I think most British people want sensible and practical policies that are grounded in reality, without idealism or pandering to minority (often relatively extremist) interests.

The Tories have run this country into the ground and although they are supposedly right wing, they have rarely institued genuinely conversative policies. On the contrary, they have increased government interference in our lives; meddled disastrously with the economy and in the process made the rich richer and the poor poorer - and I'm not just talking about Liz Truss - I'm talking about the insane amount of borrowing predicated on ever-increasing stealth taxation, and how they handled the lockdowns (Labour would have been worse though, apart from the blatantly criminal aspects, which seem rife in the Conservative party); presided over a huge and largely unregulated increase in immigration; presided over a badly fudged withdrawal from the EU; and increasingly followed what are to my mind globalist agendas, to the detriment and destabilisation of this country... I could go on...

Simple pleasures
at 13:28 3 Jul 2024

A log fire crackling in the grate on a cold night.

A cup of good coffee in the morning, made in a Moka pot on the stove.

And as the Chef has said, hot buttered toast.

Simple pleasures are the best.

I've been thinking what an incredible missed opportunity this has been for the Liberal Democrats. If ever there was a time for a straightforward, centrist party, this was it. And I think many of us would welcome the opportunity to vote for such a party. But the LDs seemed to have lurched the left themselves, and at the same time, it's hard to take Ed Davey seriously.

There's certainly no party that I feel represents my views on how this country should be governed, and like others have said on here, I feel a spoilt ballot paper - i.e. 'none of the above' - is the only option for me. By voting, I think you enter a tacit agreement to be governed, and I certainly do not wish to be governed by either the Tories or Labour.

Yeah, okay Brian, I'll go with great save.

But on the BBC they're comparing it to Banks' save from Pele's header in the 1970 world cup. In fact I think the commentator also made that comparison last night. Which is absurd.

Watched it in real time and thought it was a decent save, he didn't have to stretch too far, and he claws it out. Decent save. Don't understand the hype about it, other than the fact that, of course, it prevented Austria from equalising and taking the game to extra time.

Book recommendation
at 18:08 2 Jul 2024

About a month ago a friend recommended 'Across the Nightingale Floor' the first book in the Tales of the Otori series, and I was hooked. I'm now nearly at the end of book 5 and already feeling sad that this is the last one. These books are almost too good, they're so incredibly readable, you just devour them.

They're set in a fictionalised feudal Japan which is beautifully realised and despite the fast pace, they're imbued with a deep spirituality. Wonderful.

Pfff France Belgium was so dull I switched over after 30 minutes to watch the far more appealing Emma Raducanu win her first round game at Wimbledon. Switched back and it was still 0-0 deep into the second half. A deflected shot finally won it. France made heavy going of this, but Belgium were dire.

Toney looks good though, doesn't he. He's a smart footballer. I like him. And Southgate is definitely lucky. Finding his best team out as he stumbles along and just about keeping his balance. It's a tightrope act. Gareth Blondini.

That England game was mentalist.

I reckon that last gasp turnaround is going to catapult them to the semi-finals.

If you can't be good, be lucky.

Austria have been superb: well-organised and with no 'star names' to disrupt the team spirit, they have really impressed me. They face Turkey in the next round, should be a great game.

I watched Czechia v Turkey, a spicy, feisty, firecracker of a game played in a febrile atmosphere, with something like 19 cards dished out including a second yellow sending off for the Czechs on 20 minutes and another sending off after the final whistle.

When Turkey scored on 51 minutes, an absolutely stunning faded strike across the goal that eluded the keeper it looked all over, but the Czechs kept on going and deservedly scored on 66. At times it resembled a war zone, but the Czechs looked the more likely until Turkey delivered the killer punch at the death, followed by a mass brawl. Very entertaining!
