Thought I'd try an experiment and use 'for you' for a change and see what came up. To my surprise (after reading what's been said in this thread), it was all revelant to what I'm interested in. No porn, no mad, unhinged rants, or any weird stuff, and no ads... just current affairs and sports stories, along with some literature and music....

I'm not exactly sure how algorithms work, but.... 🤔

Well that's strange, it really isn't my experience... I'm wondering whether it's your browser? I use firefox with adblock... I don't get any unwanted ads, I get a chronological feed from a broad spectrum of sites and people... not sure what else to suggest.

Why don't you just stop using 'for you' then, and use 'following' instead?

If you follow a broad selection of news sites of whichever political bent you like, along with people you find interesting, you'll get an informative and often fascinating chronological feed with all sorts of links to other stories to follow if you choose.

At least that's how it works for me.

You've sold it to me, I'm moving over. But first I will need to do a Guardian-style flounce to announce to my ten followers that I am leaving X, because, well... errr... Muskrat...

A brilliant evisceration of the floundering Guardian.

Well, since you asked, here's an example:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68409929

You might think this is a good thing, but in reality, it's massive government overreach in an attempt to suppress opinions that differ from Trudeau's (and his allies) cultural orthodoxy. It is the proverbial slippery slope towards a kind of totalitarianism. You think I'm exaggerating? Well (for example), if this law is passed, it could enable judges to put people under house arrest if they’re viewed as likely to commit a hate offence. No actual crime would be required for this type of punishment.

And then there's the issue of who monitors this (under Canada's proposals, this doesn't have to be a judge, it could be anyone they employ to do it), and also, of course, there is the question of "quis custodiet ipsos custodes?: who guards the the guards? Who decides what is 'acceptable' and what is 'not acceptable'?

"Hate speech" is, IMHO, an Orwellian crime. It is akin to 'thought crime'.

When you refer to 'people on the right' I'm not sure if you mean me, but a) I certainly don't consider myself to be right wing, or any wing, for that matter. And b) I would never want any book banned. I am an advocate of full fat free speech, warts and all.

I'm honestly surprised to hear people reporting their twitter feeds being swamped by stuff, because that is not my experience at all. I don't get any porn-related stuff, or any of the other unwanted stuff that you're reporting. Can it be that you're simply using it the wrong way? What I mean is that you have two basic viewing options: 'For you' or 'Following'. So I use 'Following' and that's it: I get the feeds I've chosen.

Regarding Elon Musk's take-over - personally speaking - and not wanting to start a tirade of opposing views - I'm glad he supports free speech. I am genuinely terrified by the attempts to shut free speech down by so-called Liberal regimes, who seem to want to completely control the narrative - under the aegis of so-called hate speech and so on - in order to stop anyone posting things they don't like.

Sure, many of you will disagree, but that's fine, that's free speech! Vive la difference - who wants cultural orthodoxy??

In memory of my grandfathers and grandmothers who served in WW1, my uncles and and grandfather who served in WW2 and all of those who served and gave their lives to protect the freedom of this country. From the bottom of my heart: thank you.

MC has got to go
at 21:46 6 Nov 2024

Getting rid of Marti, for all the reasons that seem so apparent to people right now, is an utterly bananas idea. The LAST thing we need right now is further destabilisation. The injury issue is a massive one, and I firmly believe, although it will be painful, that Marti can and will turn this around.

Bad runs of form are part and parcel of new (or relatively new) managers getting to grips with the onslaught that is the Championship. But you have to give a good manager time. This is all part of the process. He's signed for the long term, he deserves the chance to get it right.

It seems he feels the same way:

"QPR boss Cifuentes '100% confident' season will improve"

In 1969 Quincy wrote two film soundtracks, one being The Italian Job, and recorded the fabulous Walking in Space album, which includes this track which I love and feels very appropriate right now...

Atmosphere yesterday
at 07:32 3 Nov 2024

Good atmosphere at the W end of Ellerslie, plenty of singing and chanting. There was a period in the second half after the sending off when the game looked like a stalemate and the ground went quiet, including the Sunderland fans. But apart from that, pretty good.

Celar - Nothing Again
at 19:48 2 Nov 2024

I saw enough in Celar today to change my mind about him. I saw him battle and scrap a bit, put in a few good passes, and was in the right place to have our two best chances of the afternoon; obviously it's a shame he fumbled the first and just missed with that second half strike.

I think we've (understandably) written him off too early. Maybe it really has taken him this long to adjust to the Championship. I'd say this was a solid 50% improvement in him today... by that metric, I reckon we might soon even see the striker we'd hoped we'd signed.

I'm enjoying the game. Proper old school cup tie. I'm glad the BBC have decided to really get into the FA Cup in the way they have, I think it reminds people of the incredible depth there is to football in this country.

Pinch punch first of the month
at 09:51 1 Nov 2024

Don't be fecund
You know second
May quench your logical thirst
For order,
But it's no first;
And third is turd
And fourth is flabby
And fifth is shabby
It's only the first
That earns the punch,
And even that has to happen
Before lunch.
