It does feel as if we will see the end of Marti once the season is over, at which point I’d like to understand what happens next because CHAT NRE3 isn’t going anywhere for a while.
What will change if Marti leaves and a new guy has the same challenges - why type of new guy is going to accept the job if the issues become better known. They become ‘known knowns’ instead of ‘known unknowns’ if you like to think like a Septic.
Assuming we would all prefer progressive football to what we had under Gareth, what type of manager/coach is going to want to work in that type of environment ? The only segment I can think of is the one that will take the money regardless and do whatever they are told to fit in with a 25 year old’s system and recruitment.
That doesn’t mean I want (or expect) Nourry out - I’d rather he changed approach and I thought we’d seen the start of that a couple of months ago. Clearly not the case and so I see the Marti situation now being the biggest test of his CEO career to date.
If he adapts and deals with the situation like a real leader would, the adversity could be the making of the guy. I hope that happens.
If not, you could see the club going backwards again rapidly and I’d personally prefer the dildo of consequence to watching that type of football again.
Yeah, it’s like the advice to never argue with idiots - they will lower you to their standards and beat you with their expertise. Just walk away, Renee.
Teams below us make us play their system and it causes us issues, especially when more physical and direct. Sometimes feels like we didn’t bother preparing but often we start with the wrong system, selection and tactics until the subs come on, which sometimes feels 10mins too late.
When we play teams that are more open and expansive, we generally raise our performances.
And then there are just shocking days of shit - like Swansea.
Paal has some good games and less good games but he’s still a better option than Ashby, even in his chosen RB position.
Given we need to replace both of them in the summer, I wonder what/who is available for our budget that will provide an improvement on Paal because I’m not sure Larkeche is the answer - certainly not on his own as the ‘cover’ of Colback and Fox will be gone too.
Look at what we signed with Santos for a reality check. We had to repurpose Jimmy to cover that piece of recruitment.
Not ITK but I’d hazard a guess that he’s being told who to play and what system to play them in, despite the players and system we had that produced results and got us out of trouble.
Throw in some budget constraints and out of contract issues that probably reduce motivation, it’s a tricky job to succeed in.
How I long for those glory days….and another Bego punt.
I’m still not sure how we didn’t go down, it was so bloody awful at times, and thank god we stayed up.
This season has been an improvement with some much better performances, albeit some shocking days out like Swansea just to keep us honest. Consistently inconsistent at times.
However, if recruitment, retention and rehab are able to do their jobs and we maintain some continuity, it’s a much better team and squad than we have had for a while with a lot of younger talent to develop.
This is why I despair when I see loan players in the team ahead of our own and when we have no chance of signing them either.
Now, if there’s a possibility we can poach Edwards by using money from elsewhere, that would be shrewd business as he’s a cut above what we have but Yang and Ashby ? Both have done more harm than good over the games they’ve played. Given that Ashby hasn’t played for a while, it’s not because he needed to play a minimum number of games and I’m not convinced that #yangshirts will keep the FFP wolf from the door, although I did enjoy that J-Pop/K-Pop video more than I should admit on a forum - niche comes to mind.
Hoping we have some decent recovery over the next week or so and we get Kolli and co back, at least on the bench. Rayan would have been a good sub for Frey yesterday and if we get the chance, I wouldn’t mind him starting with Frey when fit.
As for Kelman, I hope we’ll see him return to replace Celar if the transfer rumours of him leaving were correct in January. We’d be paying a couple of million to sign him if he wasn’t ours so why would we not keep him given he knows where the net is now.
Whilst squad depth and recent injuries have been a factor, I would suggest that selection and change of system have been the bigger issue in the recent run of lost games.
Yang be Smyth for example.
From 4:3:3 to 4:2:3:1 - again.
More direct to piss-balling around in defence
Throw in a lack of effort (contrasted with today) and lack of opportunities/more clinical finishing, and you are going to have problems.
It was a significant improvement over recent games in terms of effort, finishing and entertainment.
IMO, Smyth makes a big difference in our system as well as providing pace and tracking back. Not sure why he was subbed - would have removed Andersen first and used Dembele centrally - probably why I’m not a coach/manager.
Saito’s sending off looked harsh live but it was a clear foul on replay. Out of character but the ref was right there and I can understand why it was given as red. Studs up, off the ground, lunging in, out of control = red. None of our players really complained.
We should have made more of Struik’s continued fouls but we said bugger all to the ref.
Wouldn’t it have been great if we’d had someone like Kelman on the bench for Frey ? I hope we take him back and can send Alfie out for a season.
