I haven’t watched The Batman but the first episode of the The Penguin is really good. I had no idea who was playing the lead so googled while watching, I never would have guessed! If you don’t already know who plays him then watch it first. It’s on Sky Atlantic.
Little Ranger Things got hold of tickets for £65 each. She was online early doors with 4 devices lined up in the queue but only one got through to the ordering stage.
I believe the theory is that the more places smoking becomes unacceptable more people give up and fewer people take up the habit. That seems to have had success in other countries. I’m not sure what knife crime or mental health has to do with smoking but I would agree that much more needs to be done. It maybe my naivety but I assume that more than one issue can be addressed at the same time. Perhaps they are leading with smoking as it’s a low hanging fruit with minimal costs and potentially a positive outcome. Also better to piss people off in the early days of a new government hoping they’ll forget when the next election comes around.
It’s not just about stopping adults smoking outside though is it. It’s an attempt to save thousands of lives and millions of pounds. I don’t know if it will solve the issue but something needs to be done. The last government wanted the same thing but sadly were swayed by the lobbyists and money from big tobacco. Hopefully this lot will have more of a backbone.
Funny you mention the Australian model on smoking. I’m pretty sure this proposal about public spaces is a direct copy of theirs. Not sure about the pricing though.
When I first read the proposals in the press I can honestly say I had no opinion whatsoever. Ban or stay as it is, I don’t have a problem with it. However the above suggestion does seem like a decent compromise and may have the desired effect the government are trying to achieve. The original smoking bans combined with big price/tax increases definitely saved lives and I think something like this could build on that.
