Yeah I was exaggerating the points to show the similarity between the arguments with Southgate and Robson.

I would argue GS has emulated Robson.

Whatever you think of Southgate, it is funny to use "Sir Bobby" as your comparison as the arguments for and against Southgate are exactly the same.

BUT HE GOT US TO A WORLD CUP SEMI IN 1990

> yes, but apart from the semi we were totally rubbish in at least 3 of the games
> we cheated past Cameroon
> we played the might of N Ireland and Egypt, lost as soon as we played a top side

As I always say, it will only become "Sir Gareth" in England fans eyes once he has long gone and we have had 3 consecutive tournaments of not qualifying or going out in the group stage.

Having said that, I do think GS has lost the plot a bit in this one. Still time.

I know what you mean but I think the weather call was such a negative approach.

If (hopefully) when a brilliant captain / coach like Morgan is in charge, I think the better way of looking at it would have been to consider the weakness of India and what they would least like to do. For me, their only weakness is not winning a major tournament in so long, so the pressure of chasing would have been daunting, especially if Rohit goes early.

To be clear, I think we would have lost anyway, so outclassed we were, but having watched this side now through the 50 over world cup and 20/20 one, the amount of dubious decisions is becoming extraordinary.

Come on SA!

Well that was awful. We'd probably have lost anyway but bizarre decision yet again to chase in a semi against India in these conditions. I thought our best hope was to go first and use scoreboard pressure. I remain totally unconvinced by the Mott / Buttler axis, especially as time for a freshen up on the white ball side now.

Time to move on:
Mo
Bairstow
Jordan

at the very least?

Belgium were pathetic. Got lots of stick from their own fans at the end too.

Think we will see it more and more - just like with England it sticks in the craw somewhat to see superstar players who earn £1m a month for their clubs and play accordingly, stick on their national shirt and play like a sack of spuds.

Or, it's all Southgate's fault.

Yes, fair play and it looks like the semis are ours, which unless we get trounced in that, will keep the Mott / Buttler axis in place, I am sure.

It was fabulous to watch Adil Rashid bowling today. So underrated that he struggles to get an IPL gig.

Not that I think about this more now I am over 50, but the thing that always hit home with me was when someone said that you were dead for billions of years before you were born, and it didn't bother you then, so why be bothered about it now?

Not sure if that is reassuring or even weirder.

Palarse selling Olise :-(

Very true but also Le Tissier was at Southampton from YTS so was the true definition of a one club conspiracy theorist nutcase man.

Can't believe Eze has got attached to Palace in the same way. I am sure if the offer triggers the release clause he will be off for some Champions League action.

I mean, it's not impossible Palace could be relegated next season without Olise.

Hope so. And surely Eze will be unimpressed that Palace have lost their best player, as well as the fact Olise has got the move and he hasn't yet.

I hope Spurs go in for him.

So much better - fair play to Mott and Buttler for getting us out of a tricky situation so although the jury's still out here, hopefully we can get to the semis at least.

you really believe that? I bet Ainsworth wouldn't have done so.

So you will never be happy then. If we win this tournament, it will be "easy group" "so lucky that xxx got knocked out so we only had to play xxx"

What a miserable way of looking at things. Only in England. We only like people who are successful once they die.

I don't think there is anything that annoys me more than USA golf fans. Some kind of Trumpian dystopia, belching USA and GETINTHEHOLE every 2 seconds.

I can't watch the Ryder Cup live in case we lose for this reason.

And, as with the posters above, as BDC lined up the putt I had my finger on the off button. As soon as it sunk I was gone.

I really wish (i) Rory had won and (ii) he hadn't behaved like a spoiled child when he lost.

Dave, I am with your GS argument all the way. It is hilarious that a manager who has turned us from also-rans time after time to finalists, semi finalists gets abused. As soon as he retires / dies they will be saying what a genius he was.

And any sort of win is good in a major tournament, re Robson's abysmal wins against Egypt and Cameroon, El Tel's on penalties against Spain, it doesn't matter.

But - my patience was tested last night. I do think with these players available he could do better than putting on Gallagher to try and kill the game. I really hope we can just go for it and also find the real Foden at the same time.

I've grown to like him over his handling of LIV, and missing those tiddlers shows some vulnerability....but, Rory mate, we can't look down on the behaviour of the Yanks and their fans if you can't show the class to hang around and shake BDC's hand and congratulate him.

I'm sure your private jet could have found a leaving slot 30 mins later.

100% agree. She actually commentated on the game, hadn't rehearsed a stupid monologue or hilarious puns, just told us who's who and what was happening.

Compared to the drivel of Matterface, more please.

I think it's different now - winning the game but going slow is one thing, not trying to win a game is not very Oz-like, plus they would surely rather England gets through than they lose to an associate nation, come second and go in a group with India (I think).

Well done, I say. Now run rate completely irrelevant which is quite an achievement. Beat Namibia and as long as Oz beat Scot and no rain.....

Thanks - I see this as the first real test of Nourry. Sure if a Premier League or massive club comes in for him then no-one can do much about that. But if he goes to Sunderland or similar, then fingers have to be pointed at Nourry, because I don't think he would go there if he was confident in what our plans were going forward.

I don't like the sound of that, Clive. Is that inside info as to his character or just worldly-wise opinion?

I know these days it is tough to keep such types but Ipswich and it seems Sheff Wed are managing it....
