We’ll have to disagree. And Richard Langley was my favourite player, I know a CM when I see one, and Madsen is so far off it, it’s not true. |

All fair points. But not sure how you can say Celar is really struggling and not note that Madsen is firmly in the same boat. So far he is doing a great impression of Andre Dozzell, couple of nice touches, missing for the rest of the game, and woeful defensively.
The way he let his man pull clear of him for the second goal by the touchline was U9s stuff. He’s got to seriously up his workrate, get stuck in, and start demanding the ball and driving us forward. As opposed to being a complete passenger and defensive liability with gaping holes right through the middle. Field must think Stefan Johansen is back.
He’s also had a lot more game time than Celar and, for me, the most disappointing signing of the lot, especially considering the price. Not sure how he comes good, because he doesn’t have a position in CM, not a 6, 8 or 10 - again, very Dozzell like. |

It’s clear to me you cannot play the way Marti wants to with this centre midfield. None of them are technically good enough to take the ball in tight spaces, turn, and play forward. Which is probably why none of them don’t go and demand the ball and try and get us playing.
We have no deep lying playmaker, despite spending millions, so Marti ball is essentially a dead duck. How or why the team wasn’t built round this critical need is the bigger question |

If Nourry doesn’t realise his own faux pas, and doesn’t course correct with Marti’s belated attendance, I’d be surprised.
Then again, reneging on his power play is probably too tough a pill for him to swallow. So he is caught between a rock and a hard place. [Post edited 25 Sep 22:13]

There is no credible third option, as you’ve laid out well. And it’s not hard to work out what is going on. it’s just some can’t or don’t want to see it. I think you used the term control freak earlier as a logical deduction based on events thus far. Pretty much spot on. Can’t or won’t elaborate here, but will do so privately. |

Agreed. I’m wondering whether Varane is a typo and the OP means Madsen instead, who actually started the game, and fits the description of being missing in action.
Varane has a lot to like about as DCM. Physical, athletic, can tackle. All of the standard DCM fare, but is showing touch, technique and the ability to play out on the half turn under pressure which is more promising. Not always, but the core ability is there, and can be built upon. The more he plays and acclimatises the better he will get.
Madsen clearly has talent on the ball, but it’s few and far between. He is very much a peripheral figure, neither involved in on the ball play demanding for it, showing for it, or off the ball in terms of positioning, tracking, getting stuck in. Getting Andre Dozzell vibes at this stage |

Dom Ball was indeed excellent at this. It’s a skill that is assumed a CM has, but not many actually have it. See Declan Rice, an 105m DCM, and pretty much all of our CMs since Faurlin, who cannot do it. |

Seems the CM saga rumbles on for yet another season.
Genuinely amazed at the profile of CM the club bought in this summer given “Marti ball” - a system that demands your deeper CMs show for the ball, open their bodies up, can take it under pressure, get on the half turn, and play out / play through the middle.
Field can’t do it. Colback can’t do it. Madsen is anonymous. Only Varane has shown promise in this regard but doesn’t start. But none of them are any kind of deep midfield anchor/conductor/playmaker.
So we continue to be restricted to working everything out to the wing and have become quite predictable at present. (nothing goesthrough the middle - the CMs just stand there either idle or in hiding). [Post edited 22 Sep 12:40]

The problem with Madsen is that he is a CM without a position. He’s neither a deep lying 6 DCM who can dictate, he isn’t an energetic box to box 8, and no chance he’s a number 10. On early showings he is a weird CM profile that doesn’t fit anywhere - see Andre Dozzell. Who he plays like - couple of nice touches here and there. Disappears for the rest of the game. You can’t do that in CM. Shouldn’t be starting currently and the balance is all wrong in there currently. [Post edited 21 Sep 17:23]

Every club does this, it’s par for the course, and it’s a level playing field.
Check the ages of the opposition regularly and you will see that is a poor excuse on QPRs behalf. We are losing, heavily, because we are not good enough. Simple as that. And it’s a long running theme |

It’s only this season that there been a notable fast-tracking process for top talents at different age groups “playing higher” ie. An u16 might be playing for the u18s. Which itself is standard practice for all academies - why we weren’t doing that as a club prior is a bigger question.
All clubs more talented players are often playing in the higher age bracket, so it’s a level playing field. So in reality, there is no excuse for getting absolutely slaughtered week on week, something that pre-dates this season. Last season was a disaster for the u18s also |

Nourry himself was behind the change. It was part of his recommendations to the club acting as a consultant. To which he was then offered the job to execute them. |

Nourry is in charge, exclusively, on squad strategy. Cifuentes has very little input. This is the European style model now in place at QPR and available not only publicly (why Cifuentes always says “you need to ask Christian” or “the club” (=Nourry) when quizzed on players ins or outs) but also confirmed from those who have links to the club. |

Cifuentes has virtually no decision-making responsibilities on the squad, ins or outs. He is the coach and is given the hand he is dealt. |

Faurlin was a number 6 / DCM - a defensively-minded player but with fantastic playmaking ability from deep, the likes of which we have not seen since.
I thought Madsen, despite a few nice touches, was not involved in the game - either defensively or offensively and the game largely by-passed him. Early days but agree with another poster that he doesn’t exactly scream number 8, a role traditionally defined by energy, stamina, and box to box ability. Interested to see more. |

One of those games where we just couldn’t put the ball in the net. Very frustrating. Of the new boys; Dembele looks top class, Saito tried but not a lot came off, Madsen largely anonymous save for a few nice touches here and there. A bit concerning that he didn’t look like he is able / willing to help the team play out through CM - didn’t make himself available or demand the ball of the CBs once. Hope he’s not another colback and Field (who was excellent) in that sense as it’s a chronic CM problem |
