Stephen's shoehorned in again 14:06 - Aug 17 with 3870 views | GRIM | It looks like Stephen's will be utilised in that holding midfield role, unless RM intends to play 3 across the back with Sugawara & KWP given licence to push on as wing backs.

Agreed. Can only think he's taken a knock...

We have looked ok but very light up front. This is set up for Archer to come on and hit the bulls eye

God only knows, even the commentators have just said Saints have taken off their best player of the 1st half, KWP has switched sides and Edozie on for the second half

Premier League newcomers Southampton had 78% of the ball and 19 shots but couldn't find a way through. Poor finishing yet again

Stephen's shoehorned in again on 17:07 - Aug 17 with 739 views | 1885_SFC | We played against 10 men for an hour and if McCarthy had just put his boot through it, we would have ended up with a valuable away point. Not too many positive points from today. Lots of huffing & puffing but the reality is it's a big step up in class from the Championship and you have to make those half chances count... or at least one of them.

Too early for the RM out posts, maybe he will be less stubborn and learn??!!??! Some good points, but some very familiar failings on show. No cutting edge, so predictable, and a stupid and unnecessary goal given away. There's no point in having possession that you don't do anything with. A centre forward and a keeper would improve us but not sure we'll get them.

we just signed an average centre forward we need a quality CB and a keeper as we have now for seasons

A classy level of conversation, congrats - but what do i expect... Nobody said RM wouldn't want a keeper - but as long as there is none, he has to work with what he's got. McCarthy is obviously instructed to play a game he is not suited to - and that is down to RM.

No we haven't signed a centre forward. Archer is a second striker or wide in a 3 (same as Diaz and Armstrong). He may end up playing CF but that doesn't mean he is one.

and if we didn't play out from the back, we would be playing a long ball game, like the one introduced by Nathan Jones. And guess what, that didn't work either. RM wants another gk and he wants the Celtic midfielder, but as he said, we can't afford it. Welcome to the PL. The three teams who went up last season went straight back down. why will it be so much easier for us? [Post edited 17 Aug 17:52]

I see this often from fans of RM. They seem to think that anything that isn't kamikaze tippy tappy must be long ball. Wrong, there's a big middle ground in between. For me, the best approach is to mix it up and keep the opposition guessing. If they press, go long - not an aimless hoof, just go over or wide of the press. If they don't press, play out from the back.

The actual simpleton is Martin for continuing with McCarthy when Lumley looked far sharper (even though he's allegedly not a top of the line keeper) during 15 minutes of pre season than McCarthy ever did. And they even give the clown a new contract which of course he gratefully signed because he knows that no other club above league one would be remotely interested ion him. First Martin insisted on mostly useless Bazunu and useless McCarthy was out of the picture, then with Bazunu injured and despite having Lumley on the bench, he brings on McCarthy. And now, first game over, we are undone by a piece of useless goal keeping. FFS
