Type 1 Diabetes 14:46 - Jul 12 with 7128 viewsFredManRave

Yesterday, completely out of the blue, our eldest son, 12, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He was taken to hospital and will be there until at least Monday while they run tests etc to understand the levels and reactions to this disorder so that we can all become educated and understand how and when to monitor and react accordingly to certain situations.
My reason for posting is basically to ask if any other parent on here has a young son or daughter with Type 1 diabetes and if so just how serious or otherwise, it affects their general day to day life and future plans.
As previously mentioned, it has come as a complete surprise and as I, fortunately, have no previous experience or knowledge of this disorder it's all a bit surreal at the moment and I'm genuinely not sure just how grave or life-changing this is going to be. We will obviously be getting a lot of medical advice over the coming days and weeks, however, any advice, opinions or suggestions on how to help my son and to be prepared for what lies ahead in general based on personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Fred, I am sorry to hear this as I know exactly the fear and pain you will be going through. My eldest son got type1 when he was 4 , he is now 21 completely out the blue . 5 years ago my youngest got diagnosed with it also at the age of 8 and I can’t lie , it broke me and still eats me up inside that both my kids have it.
There is a lot to take in and deal with but you will get through it and carry on as normal , just a little different normal.

You should’ve realised at 20 he was going to be 21……

Gutted for you mate but we forget how resilient kids are.
In 30 years time I’ve a feeling you’re going to be a very proud grandfather …… two generations of your family will hate you for forcing QPR on them though

Keep your chin up – the R’s family are with you

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Thanks mate , both my boys amaze me how they deal with it but it’s just part of our lives now and in some ways we all know nothing different . Youngest has been coming to rangers with me since he was 4 and I’m sure he hates me for it . Oldest lad started coming at an early age as well and now has no interest in football whatsoever , can’t think why

Hi FMR
My youngest who is a very promising sportsman was diagnosed 12 months ago, aged 11. Thought his sporting future was over but not so... see Stephen Redgrave or Gary Mabbutt
He was playing for WBA development squad at the time and Matt Winton helped me speak to the right people in the club to see if he could be a mascot (to cheer him up while in ICU). So there are downsides when you end up being a mascot at our worst game in his lifetime
He has gone on to spend the last 12 months with Gloucester Primary Schools setting a record in England for the only team at that age group to win every competition
While i would say it is relatively easy, compared to the past, to manage nowadays, it is in part down to your son taking personal responsibility. Things can go wrong when they dont but as yet, nothing catastrophic for mine
Have pm'ed you with my phone number if you ever would like to chat more about it or have any questions though i hope you get as great a service from your NHS as he/we did at Gloucester
All the best to him and your family but rest assured , it isnt as grave as you fear

FMR

Great responses from the LFW family, as per when this stuff rears its head.

Not dealt with childhood diabetes but dad has had it for 40 years & the way that old git acts its like having a child. The diet & meds knowledge has come so far with illnesses such as this so hopefully little FMR will be in full management stage asap.

Best wishes for speedy management of condition mate & positive vibes to you & yours.

I ride for a cycling club VeloOne
( http://veloonecycling.co.uk/#header )which is a team set up for riders and supporters that have or want to support children with diabetes. JDRF (Junior Diabetes Research Fund)

Check out their website there is lots of information out there

For some inspiration there's even a professional cycling team that all riders have diabetes

I was diagnosed type 1 at 40,. rare as hens teeth, like 1 in 800,00. tbh its a pain in the ass at first ujntil you get used to the blood tests and injections, but after that you just adjust your llifestyle to fit, I still teach martial arts and gig regularly, just have to be careful.

12 is a horrid age to get it tho as the key to managing it is discipline, which no 12 year old has. you'll have to find him a great specialist (Lantus is the best slow release insulin but stings a bit, but there are alternatives) Just try to get him to understand if he keeps a lid on it he'll be fine. He can eat anything as long as he injects the right amount of insulin per 10gs of carbs he eats - I did a weeks course over here in NZ allowing me to memorise the carb content of all the common foods, I cant recommend that enough! the other thing is to check the carb content of what he eats and "test" him on it until he know them down by heart. Feel free to PM me or FB me if you want to chat more, it's not the end of the world, just a pain in the ass!

Just an update, first and foremost to say thanks again for the replies in this thread and the pms that I've received.
You would hope to never have to start a thread about a very personal situation that is having a negative effect on your life, asking and hoping for advice to help you get through it. But as this thread and many, many others before have shown, this forum can be exceptional as can those of us that take part in it.
Tommy is still in hospital and will be for a few more days whilst they continue to do tests and educate all of us on what it all means. Today was the biggest wake-up call so far, realising just how much my 12-year-old is going to have to grow up and take a huge amount of responsibility for his actions. But he's been so mature and responsible in his initial response to this situation that it bodes well for the future.
Thanks again to all of you that have replied and when I'm next back in England I'll buy you all a pint each. This offer only applies to posts before this message!
Cheers.
Graham.
