We’ve never needed one!

We just let the manager (and his team) discuss what players he wanted, or didn’t want, with the chairman.

This is the model that brought us success in our rise up the leagues. This way the manager doesn’t have players foisted on him he doesn’t want (eg Roque Mesa), and can get rid of any bad eggs, or dead wood. It’s not rocket science and saves a 6 figure salary.

The argument for it is that managers move clubs more often than most players (when was the last time we had one last longer than two years?) so having a clear identity and structure at the football club that goes beyond any individual manager is important for lasting stability and success.

With so many of ours fans expecting Potter to throw his toys out of the pram at any moment is it any wonder the owners might be looking for a DoF?

We may not have had a DoF in name but we've had someone performing that role in Huw Jenkins.

I personally would rather the role is carved out and defined properly with someone qualified from a football background taking it. Rather than a businessman like HJ. That may have worked in the lower leagues but we were eventually exposed for it in the Premier League.
