Even with the drilling, it's just adding more sand and I thought that's what the problem was, surely when it rains it'll just flood again. I don't suppose it magics some grass up does it? Can't see much grass on our pitch... | ![](/images/avatars/0.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |

Depends what type of sand you use. Kiln dried sand is the answer! | ![](/images/avatars/1062.gif) |

Instead of playing Saturdays in the winter, you mean? When the fixtures came out, the only midweek game post-Christmas was Bristol Rovers away. (Bury was originally Easter Monday). Tomorrow and every other subsequent Tuesday game has been brought about by postponements and rearrangements | ![](/images/avatars/1107.gif) |

I think we had a similar problem about 20 odd years ago! I remember the groundsman at the time, Mark somebody being pictured in the Observer with a flooded pitch, ducks on it and a cheesy grin! He didn't stay in the job much longer! He used the wrong sand, which I believe forms a cement like crust under the playing surface, which the water cant permeate. The drilling cracks the crust and the kiln dried sand (as R17 suggests) stays granular (if that's a word) so the water can drain below the crust and through the drainage system. We need a safe playable surface, true it wont win a beauty contests, but as long as we can play games and the players aren't at risk, that's all that matters for the next 13 weeks. The board hasn't covered itself in glory recently, but I do feel that in our current position this option rather than relaying the pitch, potentially having this problem again next year is the right thing to do. PS I saw Ollie at Tesco petrol station :-) [Post edited 29 Jan 2018 22:31]

I broadly agree that if the expert advice has been to carry out the suggested work this week then the board would have little choice but to take it; but it doesn't follow that relaying the pitch would leave us with the same problem this time next year If you read the OS statement, the club have agreed a 7 week timeframe in the summer with Hornets to completely overhaul the ground and playing surface, presumably not making the mistake of using the wrong type of sand as in 2016 which ultimately has led to the current muddy mess The question is: has the expert advice been to undertake the suggested work as the first choice option, or have the board ruled out relaying the pitch and asked for the best advice without having to relay the pitch? Relaying the pitch, as per this time last year, would have provided a surface that'd last till the summer overhaul. With the current work programme, it looks a bit more hit & miss, but I hope for everyone's sake that it works [Post edited 29 Jan 2018 22:46]

WIGAN GAME on 08:35 - Jan 30 with 2250 views | Meanwood | We need medium/fine rounded particle sands [dune sand] and not angular [quarried], the flat angular sides to the sand grain, eventually bed themselves together on the flat sides causing lack of permeation, rounded particle sand do not, effectively you have a bucket of marbles, add in fibre to bind the root system, a decent Cheshire loam between 30/40% by volume, clean out the drains so the water can escape. This science is not new, and quite easy to mange if you know what you are doing.[Oli did!] if quarried sand added its generally not recoverable so time to "rip it up and start again" name that tune? | ![](/images/avatars/10941.gif) | | ![](/images/icons/ignore-user.png) |
