Wycombe Wanderers 1-3 Middlesbrough: Match Report
Saturday, 2nd Jan 2021 16:54 by Phil Spencer

Middlesbrough recorded a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

That win sees the Teessiders go within one point of the play-off spots with a game in hand.

It was a torrid start for Warnock's side as Uche Ikpeazu capitalised on some lapse defending to bend one into the far corner after just a few minutes.

Middlesbrough were second best in the early stages but did try and find a breakthrough as Marvin Johnson and Marcus Browne carved out openings.

Browne came into the starting XI for this one looking to make a real impression after a frustrating spell on the sidelines with injury and looking dangerous in spells.

It was Browne who carved out Middlesbrough's first opportunity of the game after a smart turn found Chuba Akpom who had his effort blocked.

An excellent first 30 minutes was capped off for the returning star as he slotted home from close range to make it 1-1 after a Paddy McNair corner.

That goal signalled a change in momentum as Warnock's side pushed forward to try and take the lead.

Sam Morsy went close when his effort was inadvertently blocked by Akpom who couldn't get himself out of the firing line.

Marcus Tavernier had enjoyed a lively opening and put Middlesbrough into the lead after cutting in from the right flank and firing a left-footed effort past the goalkeeper.

The boys weren't having it all their own way though, with Anis Mehmeti forcing Bettinelli into a smart save to retain the lead as the game moved towards the break.

Middlesbrough continued their dominance in the second half when Johnson found Tavernier in the area who fired an effort over the bar.

Ryan Tafazolli then gave the visitors a scare after an hour when a headed effort narrowly missed the target, before Scott Kashket grazed the crossbar with a shot.

However the game rarely looked in doubt as George Saville had an effort cleared off the line, before Tavernier rattled the underside of the bar with a rasping effort.

But the victory was wrapped up in the 81st minute when Chuba Akpom bundled home from a set piece.

Who was Middlesbrough's man of the match against Wycombe Wanderers?
