Thank you for the insights. Nourry said in his recent talk that moving to Academy 1 status would not stop bigger clubs stealing our players, so I was left wondering at the value of it. If clubs would have to pay more compensation, I understand it more. Nourry said it simply comes down to a cost benefit analysis, and that also makes more sense now - ie how much does it cost extra to get this status v how much more in compensation do we think we would receive assuming bigger clubs come and steal x number of our young players? BTW, if the system is as you describe it seems very unfair (guess I shouldn't be surprised): I would argue the smaller clubs - mainly not academy 1 - are surely the ones in more need of compensation? |

You seem to have missed Gaza's post, my namesake, but its worth reading. I was mildly frustrated with all the changes myself - given the pre-match talk - but when you break it down as Gaza has done, which specific changes do you object to? I give you Madsen, btw, but apart from that? Given potential fitness issues around Dunne and Smyth in particular, how would you justify not resting them (given what the heavy schedule appears to have done to Cook)? Finally, would you prefer Marti to not even consider all the data that, fairly scientifically now, sets out the fitness and medical wellbeing of individual players? After all, you feel able to condemn Marti's decisions fairly robustly without, I assume, having access to all the information that the head coach surely considers before naming his team |

Question I would like answered would be what lessons they learned from last summer's recruitment. Sensible to be more data driven than before, but has it now gone too far towards data? How, moving forwards, when assessing a player from certain mainland European or South American leagues, will they look at those statistics given the often greater physicality and fixture demands of the Championship? Have they factored that in enough to date, does he think? |

Bit harsh. I’ve revised down the figures to the lowest conceivable amount - however you slice and dice it, on even the most optimistic forecast (so not relying on any leaks) the Madsen transfer was a cluster-f*ck financially as well as in a footballing sense |

Thank you. Impressive. So how many minutes does he go per goal (league and cup combined)? Must be impressively low. If you know that is - appreciate not your job to answer! |

Well we had players on 6-7k a week under Paladini - he showed me a print out of the wages! So allowing for inflation I don’t think 20k a week for a player who cost 2m is outrageous. But I’ll concede the point. Let’s say he is on 10,000 a week. That’s over 520,000 a year. Let’s lower it even further and say 500k a year. Over 5 years that is 2.5m in wages. I don’t think anyone is suggesting he cost less than 2m. So total outlay at the very least 4.5m. Hence a completely different level of investment to a Bennie, Morgan or Santos. And that’s not even counting Celar in last summer’s spend. So I think my point stands - we will need to get a much chunkier fee than we have managed on any sale since Eze simply to come out of last summer’s window in any kind of financial credit. As for things not leaking, I think respectfully it’s a little naive to think that doesn’t happen. Ask any journalist. [Post edited 13 Jan 21:01]

I find the EDB situation a mystery. Am by nature highly sceptical of conspiracy theories but I can't help wondering if something has happened behind the scenes. To be given a new contract in the summer and seemingly set to have a breakthrough season but then so far down the pecking order that even if 5 or 6 other midfielders were shot, Marti would still be reluctant to play him. |

Well Morgan would have to sell for a seriously big fee. Lets say the Madsen fee is 2m (a very conservative estimate). Lets say he is on 20k a week (not ridiculous seeing as he cost 2m plus). That is £1m per year salary. So £5m in wages over 5 years. And with the 2m transfer fee that's 7m. Will we get 7m for Morgan? And that's just to break even, not leaving us any money to re-invest. So no, I just don't think you can count all transfers as being of equal significance, you have to judge according to outlay. Absolutely no problems with taking punts on the likes of Santos (possibly a fail but very early to tell) and Morgan (almost certainly a big win). But if you spend Madsen money on a player a club like us just can't afford to get it SO badly wrong. He is SO lacking in what is required of a Championship footballer I can only conclude that a) he wasn't scouted at all and we simply signed him on his stats, or b) he was watched when he was playing such low-grade, weak as piss opposition that no lessons should have been taken from the match, and c) the edict that we would from now on assess a player's character as well as playing performance must have been waived for this signing. Am not voting because its a bit like taking time to seriously think if you love your wife a bit less because she made herself a cup of tea but didn't offer you one. Its irritating, but its so not the reason you are either going to stay married or file for divorce. It would be a bit menopausal to change your view of a manager after one cup game (and I speak as one who was quite frustrated for all the reasons highlighted by many posters and by Clive in his report). |

Regardless of the precise figure I don't think anyone disputes that he is one of our two most expensive signings from the last window, widely reported to be around £3m. This club is not the only source of information, there is the agent and the selling club along with numerous other officials, friends, contacts etc who can all leak information. The bottom line is we have paid, on a 5-year contract, what is for us a huge amount of money on one of the most frustratingly disappointing players many of us can remember pulling on the shirt. As such this is a completely different category of failed signing than, for example, Santos might prove to be. I called Madsen the "friendly ghost" but I think Clive's "empty shirt" is better. The shirt is empty, and so too are our pockets. |

Re the interviewer they are obviously the gentlest lobs delivered since Beefy Botham trundled in during his last season as a bowler on a soft wicket. Woodward and Bernstein, he ain't. But I think you are confusing PR with journalism. Its an in-house puff-job to play up success and play down failure. He is not going to ask why we wasted several million on Madsen, why we are developing a mediocre and inexperienced right back for Newcastle, or why he talked up our cup prospects only to field a weakened team against much stronger opposition. That would be decent journalism, but he is part of the marketing dept. Besides, even if he were a hack, sports journalists are among the most craven of the breed anyway (because they are terrified of being denied future access). |

Anyone got any stats on Kolli now? How many minutes per goal? What is his xG etc? As we have seen with other players, stats are not everything, but for someone I didn't even realise could play as an out and out striker he seems to have a calmness and poise in front of goal that both belies his age and suggests he could be a number 9, particularly when you factor in his growing strength and nuisance value to defenders. Yes he might have done better with the promising chance he tried to curl into the top right corner but we have seen our main strikers miss far easier chances than the one he nonchalantly put away. |
| Forum Reply | Madsen Mins at 14:01 13 Jan 2025
That would be a perfectly rational comment if, as one of about 9 or 10 incomers, he had used up a comparable amount of the transfer budget. But he was our "marquee" signing. |

I like this idea. I would certainly bid big to be the controller. However, I think you could have a ten pound rocket taped up his arse and it wouldn't get him motivated. Even when he does move it is just to sort of waft about in vague proximity to the ball, there is never any intent to actually win it. As for the old troupe that there might be mental health/ other issues at play, judging by his social media feed with shopping in Knightsbridge and exploring the Michelin Guide, he doesn't look terribly upset. Indeed, he looks jolly happy with life, as well he might on a five-year-contract. |

Don’t disagree with your list of who isn’t good enough but how would we get rid of them? No one would buy them and they are all under contract. The fact we have a lot of players who aren’t good enough - and a number of who are - is precisely why we are a mid table Championship team. It’s the same at most clubs around us in the league I expect. The disappointment is how poor the last window was for us relative to outlay. All bar a couple of the players who are good enough were in the building last season and everyone who isn’t good enough is a new arrival |
