What about the future though, now the precedent has been set. That's why have the Paralympics , this smacks of PC.

Oscar Pistorius on 13:07 - Aug 4 with 1767 views | JonDoeman | Sports engineer David James, a senior lecturer at England's Sheffield Hallam University, disagrees with Pistorius' inclusion in the Olympics on both scientific and ethical grounds. "Sport is hard-nosed and brutal and bloody and has no place for sob stories. People want Oscar to run and do well. However, will they think the same if he wins?" James said. "I predict a backlash if he wins anything. They will attribute that performance to the blades. I think there would be real implications if he won." Pistorius' case was settled - legally anyway - in 2008 when sports' highest court lifted the ban from able-bodied events imposed on him by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The Court of Arbitration for Sport said that Pistorius probably gets some advantages from the springy, curved blades, but also suffers some disadvantages, and they even out in the end. James doesn't agree. "To say he doesn't have an advantage is stretching it," the sports engineer said. "When he's up to speed, he is more efficient than someone with muscle and bone. He can relocate his legs faster because they are lighter." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/09/oscar-pistorius-carbon-fiber-blades-adv

Because he runs faster than many of the able bodied competitors and its been proven to the IAAF's satisfaction that he gains no advantage. Why SHOULDNT he be allowed to run?

Cos I don't believe the "no advantage" bit now, and I definitely know it won't be the case in future.

Merritt is a convicted drug cheat so he should know about getting an unfair advantage. Pistorius is an absolute hero for what he has achieved, the most remarkable man at the Olympics. He lights up a sport that has spent most of the past 20 years in the gutter.
Oscar Pistorius on 13:20 - Aug 4 with 1712 views | THEBUSH | I think if he did manage to win the Gold, there would be enormous resentment against him, but I don't think it will happen, as for me the blades are no substitute for real legs. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Oscar Pistorius on 13:21 - Aug 4 with 1704 views | HollowayRanger | i disagree with it why cant able bodied people take part in the para olympics cant have it both ways? but far more importantly what if he has an injury or falls those blades could do some damage to another runner its why he isnt allowed to be in certain parts of the relay a decision he is trying to fight now that the door has been opened to him still id rather see him compeat then chambers gatlin and all the other dirty drug cheats racing out there today

It a case of what you want to believe. If you want to believe a man with no shins gain an advantage over other professional athletes then you will. If there was even an inkling of genuine doubt, the IAAF wouldnt have let him compete. As his SB is well over a second off the pace, its really not worth getting worked up over.

"absolute hero for what he has achieved" ==================================== Plenty of them in the Paralympics where he should be. Be a different story if he had a chance of winning, and that's why it's a dangerous precedent.

You could argue athletic supports and sports bras aid performance. Bar humbug Blobby you could get a serious upper cut if the SB's are missing. Plus put your neck out keeping up with the movement.

Good job you've got independently swivelling eyes then innit? If sports bras were banned the athlete with the biggest tits would be first to breast the tape.So expect the Chinese to breed a race with gigantic nipples.

Pretty sad world we live in where people with no legs are told they cant play with the able bodied kids. How may I ask do YOU believe he gains an advantage through having no lower legs?

yeah, he can relocate his legs faster AT TOP SPEED. however, this relocation is not 'abnormal', and certainly not more than the top athletes manage. however, he is also at a massive disadvantage around corners and off the blocks. the initial results were debunked because they only measured Pistorius 'full flow' the same article you've linked also includes the opinion of hugh herr, whose findings were accepted by the CAS and IAAF...

Yes and as Jeff says it conveniently completely ignores the fact that Pistorous is at a huge disadvantage out of the blocks and in the bends. The IAAF & CAS were very wary about ever letting him into the Olympics and they have been convinced which is good enough for me. It's also adjudged on an individual basis so if another athlete turns up and runs faster than the Olympic champion they will be tested and if gaining an advantage, barred from competing.

Because even though he has no hope of winning, as a disabled person he wants to show that he can compete with able bodies athletes. I'm genuinely shocked that anyone could have a problem with a disabled runner making up the numbers in a primarily able bodied event.

Strange post Jamie, we're talking the very highest level of sport here. With your attitude, they might as well let the wheelchairs in as well, now those buggers can shift!
