One of the first black players to play FOR England, not in.

Who was Englands first black player?

Laurie Cunningham or Viv Anderson?

Poll: Shamima Beghum

When he played - he was in an early group of black players who played for the full England team. Viv Anderson was the first with a full England cap in 1978 and LB was not far behind. The first black player in England for a club side was back in about 1910. One player was selected to play for England in the early 20th century, but when the authorities realised he was black his selection was withdrawn.

I think what Luther probably said / meant he was one of the first black players to play FOR England

Who's Next?

Laurie Cunningham was the first to represent England at any level (U21) then Viv Anderson was the first to play in the first team. LB was still one of the first to play in English football in the modern era having started about 75 I think. Before that I remember Clyde Best/Ade Coker at West Ham and we had Derek Richardson.

Clyde Best's dad Tom played for us back in the 1950's

He had played for Cardiff just after the war.

There were a few black players around. I remember Charlie Williams playing for a Yorkshire team. Donny or Barnsley, I think
There were a couple of others Albert Johannsen at Leeds was notable

Gil Scott-Heron's dad played for Celtic in the 50s. According to the official history, his nickname was the "Black Pearl". According to a bloke I used to work with who went to the games, it was the "White Darky".

Interesting that it took until 1978 for England to pick a black player when Rugby League, a much smaller sport of course, had been picking black players for much longer. I think it was George Bennet in the 1930's, whilst Clive Sullivan captained Great Britain in the early 1970's and Ellery Hanley coached GB in the 90's.

John Charles (the West Ham one, not the Welsh one) won five England youth caps and was the first black player to represent England at any level.

I am still Steve but no longer in Dagenham.

Clive Sullivan was the first black British captain in any sport. Mind you, the England cricket team had the Nawab of Pataudi and Colonel H. H. Shri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, GCSI, GBE, years before.
