Liz Truss considered scrapping all cancer treatment 23:19 - Aug 27 with 5080 views | majorraglan | Several newspapers are carrying reports that following her poorly received mini budget, Truss considered scrapping NHS cancer treatments to save money. To be honest I was stunned when I first read the article in The Independent and thought it was a wind up because April the 1st had passed, but the story is being carried by nearly all the papers. The articles give the impression that things were shambolic under Truss, but it’s staggering that she and some of her team could countenance such a move. https://www.independent.co.uk/?CMP=ILC-refresh https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/27/liz-truss-considered-cu

Do you honestly believe that she considered scrapping all cancer treatment, that would be absolute political suicide, and even she wasn't that thick.

The original article definitely used the word “ALL” which is why I was astounded, the updated article also features the word “All” in its headline. Unfortunately when I attached the link last night it was for the Independent’s home page and not the original story. The author, Sir Anthony Seldon has done biographies on the last 7 uk prime ministers. It may be a BS story, but then again there may be something in it. If it’s a pack of lies I’d expect to see Truss litigate. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/liz-truss-kwasi-kwarteng-at-10-nh

Yep, and with perfect timing, what with the furore about upcoming tax rises, accusations of two tier policing, state censorship. letting out of prisoners too early, riots, and small boat arrivals hitting 20,000 this week etc. So to sum up i.e. despite the Conservative Party having truy appalling and disastrous opinion poll ratings with some polls showing 15% - 25%+ gaps between Labour and Conservative Party, and when a general election was just around the corner? Liz Truss decided that the best way to avoid the total extinction of The Conservative Party was to hit its dwindling support base with news about the party's future direction? A direction showing mass NHS closures involving The Royal Marsden Hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Addenbrooke's Oncology Centre etc..... And with never witnessed before mass NHS redundancies and complete destruction of ALL NHS cancer treatment services and provision. When she could have up'd VAT, NI, fuel duty, and income tax instead?

For Liz Truss to make a proposal to close all NHS cancer services, hospitals, wards, units and facilities would have meant that she had gone completely insane like fictional character Colonel Kurtz did (played by Marlon Brando) in movie Apocalypse Now. Denying NHS cancer treatment to millions of patients that require it, anything on par with that? Maybe proposing to throw babies and their incubators from top floor maternity wards as a cost cutting measure is on par?

Wasn't at that one in exactly the same way that I was not at any of the alien abduction events that often end up in books, whereupon the author who has written the book always gets experimented upon whilst aboard the mothership, to then be released, to write a book about it afterwards. Which is? To everyone belonging to the world of the bleeding-bloody-obvious, nearly as far fetched as a person wishing to cause the very extinction of her own political party by blatantly denying vital NHS services to millions of cancer sufferers. Man, woman and child alike! Call me picky but that may be considered to be a bit of a vote loser bearing in mind also that its best not to do so whilst a politcal party is sinking ever deeper in the quicksand of political oblivion. Liz Truss considered scrapping all cancer treatment on 16:00 - Aug 28 by Scotia | Thank god it wasn't. She triggered a financial disaster without it being implemented. UK borrowing was hit by huge interest rates in what international economists called the "moron premium" for months after she'd gone. We're still paying those high interest rates, if not on your individual mortgage then the national debt. |
They raise interest rates to try and stem inflation. The surge in inflation was due to the COVID pandemic and its massive government borrowing and subsequently the huge borrowing to fund Ukraine. Inflation doesn’t rise because Liz Truss wanted to cut income tax for the poorest people or because she didn’t want to raise Corporation tax. Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

But then on top of all that she announced a budget of billions of unfunded tax cuts and public spending. We needed to do the opposite. We didn't and don't have the money to pay for it. Tax rises are coming and are needed.

Yet they weren’t implemented. So saying Liz Truss made interest rates go up is nonsense. Unless you want to believe the Bank of England put up interest rates on budget ideas they know haven’t and wouldn’t be implemented. Also you’ll have to ignore the evidence of massive borrowing for COVID and Ukraine. Now you’re advocating on tax being raised based on the above. Which will hurt far more people than the fake story about Truss wanting to kill all cancer patients or whatever nonsense they come up with. Talk about licking the boot of the state.

The announcement was enough. They weren't implemented because they were completely mental. Taxes have to be raised because the country is skint. We're skint because of a financial crash, covid, wars and stupid vote grabbing NI cuts. Oh and Brexit. We're all hurt and we're going to be hurt in the pocket more. But if my old man doesn't have to wait 8 hrs for a taxi if he's having a stroke I'm happy to pay for it. [Post edited 28 Aug 22:49]

Truss’s tax rises weren’t implemented because Hunt came in and set about reversin* them all, but her actions most certainly impacted on interest rates and caused them to rise higher than they would have had it not been for her budget. The pound fell sharply and borrowing costs on government bonds soared. This caused chaos for pension funds as the complicated way they borrowed money worked on the assumption that bond rates would always be steady and relatively low. Most noticeably for the average household, mortgage lenders started to pull their best rates, as Swaps – which set fixed pricing – began to climb. Within a week of Truss’s budget most of the big lenders had pulled their mortgage products and replace them with alternatives which were approximately 1/2% higher.
