10,000 prisoners to be released 11:57 - Jul 12 with 4233 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | What a country we live in. They say crime doesn’t pay it really does. There’s no justice in this country, criminals have free rein to do whatever the hell they like inflicting a lifetime of misery upon their many victims often without consequence. If the prisons are full build more prisons. Don’t let the scumbags out.

10,000 prisoners to be released on 18:18 - Jul 12 by KeithHaynes | I’m unsure if anyone has been jailed for non payment of a tv licence in recent years. There may be a couple of instances with other circumstances 🤷🏻♂️ |
You're probably right but the fact over a hundred people a day are prosecuted for not having a licence whilst shop lifting is not considered a crime anymore in some forces . A crime which has a direct impact on independent shop owners as opposed to deciding whether Gary Lineker gets another pay rise.

Since when has free speech and putting one's point of view on this site been banned. Crime is a national issue and not just a problem in Aberavon. It was Kinnock and his labour friends in the Senedd that stopped the prison being built in Baglan in 2019, not Westminster withdrawing funds. If it was a lack of funds as your fellow poster claims how to you explain the new Prisons since 2019. HMP Five Wells was opened in March 2022 and HMP Fosse way May 2023. Construction work is under way on HMP Millsike and is expected to open in 2025. Sources house of commons library. The Welsh government sabotaged the Baglan prison by selling the land. In reality NIMBYism makes no difference to planning, it didn't even make it to a planning application because there was no money for it. Neath Port - Talbot council were very keen on it being there. I believe the justice secretary at the time said they were looking at other locations, they obviously didn't find any because none have been built since. |
Wrong two have been built and one is under construction. HMP Five Wells opened March 2022. HMP Fosse Way May 2023 HMP Millsike is due to open 2025

Thanks for confirming it was Steven Kinnock and the Welsh government that blocked it. More jobs in Wales lost as a result of the Senedd.

Do not understand that attitude - we have a large prison in Bridgend, and other than bringing employment, it has zero impact on the town. On the other side of the debate as an often visitor to the prison, it really does not feel like a place of punishment with its manicured gardens and a library better stocked than any of the public libraries in the area. also, with clear signs of understaffing. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

None of those are in Wales though. Basically WG wanted more justice powers devolved to them but Westminster wouldn't fund them so WG threw their toys out of the pram.

You must be joking , that would be against their human rights , although just think of all those lawyers clambering to volunteer to fight their appeals on behalf of the great unwashed .

Only issue is do the more serious offenders get the sea view or not.

Maybe if lawyers were made to pay the full costs for any appeal that is deemed to be frivolous by the court, I'd wager it would make a few of the bloodsuckers think twice.

Sadly it’s not enough. Current prison capacity across the U.K. is around 98,000, however in England and Wales it’s around 89000. Based on current intelligence /trends it’s been identified that capacity in England and Wales needs to be increased to between 95,000 and 114,000. Between 2010 and 2023 a total of 10,987 new prison places were created, however 10,680 were lost so there was only a net increase 307 places. To achieve the increase, the government had to “re-role” 2 Immigration Removal Centres into adult prisons. In 2019, Boris stated that by 2023 he’d spend £2.5bn and create 10,000 new prison places, guess what - he failed miserably. Between 2019 and 2023 when the Justice Minister provided and update to Parliament there had actually been a decrease of 25 places. In addition to the above, the Chief Inspector of Prisons has called for the closure of 1 in 10 Victorian prisons as they are “barely fit for purpose.” Losing 14 prisons including Pentonville, Wandsworth, Leeds, Liverpool, would remove around 5,000 places on their own.
10,000 prisoners to be released on 00:28 - Jul 14 with 680 views | Robbie | Easiest answer to prison and overcrowding is educating people not to break the laws . A lost cause nowadays , years of the rise in serious crime and minimal policing have given criminals free rein , I will not get sent to prision , suspended sentence , thats ok . ASBO s were considered a badge of honour tor some years ago , that idea got dropped . Parole Board are really need to be in tune with Public opinion now or just release anyone who fits their thinking of rehabilitation back in the Community . Not a happy ending awaits going forward regarding law and order .

The work to deport foreign detainees needs to start as soon as they get banged up, they need to be catalogued and the work needs to start asap. Where possible, they should be transferred to a prison in their home country, if that’s not possible we should look to “encourage” them to leave and if that means releasing them early to get on that plane so be it. I’d have no objection to giving them a resettlement payment too if it greased the wheels and got them out of here quicker - it would be more cost effective saving us money in legal fees and the cost of housing them in prison. They’d be served with a barring notice and told if they return they’d finish their original sentence and get an additional period in jail - say minimum 5 years.

I'd agree with most of what you say, with the exception of giving them a resettlement payment.

If it saves money then why not? I would add though, they have to agree to full bometrics being taken and agree to never come back here, and sign that contract.

I don’t want to pay them ether, but looking at the bigger picture think it would be a lot cheaper if we did. We’d cut down on appeals etc and lots of other incidental expenses such as housing expenses. When a prisoner is released from prison, is highly likely they’ll satisfy the criteria of being a priority need which in effect means the Local Authority will have an obligation to house them which costs a fortune. We’d save a fortune if we bunged them some coin.

Surely a resettlement payment is just an incentive to get banged up in the first place?

Great idea , cheers , see you later when I return . Sunak failed dismally on Border Controls , a vote loser for me big time . Stamer the Human Rights lawyer is not filling me with confidence over his approach now . Wonder if the Rwanda Government and Politicians have had their compensation package yet added to costs of airplanes waiting to take off with no passengers on board , really is a laughable dilemma . It won’t be long before electing this government proves to be a salutary lesson .

Yeah if a “resettlement payment” is the equivalent of several years salary back home there’ll be no end of people willing to take 6 months time out to earn it.
