Euros Match Fred on 16:41 - Jun 19 by Lblock | I was thinking that as I watched Albania in both their games. Was supporting them as my regular cafe (kaff) is run by Albanians and they look after us really well. I knew nothing about them but they look full of energy, enthusiasm, physical and can play a bit....... more enjoyable than England so far for sure. Have to agree - have enjoyed all the games I've seen so far apart from England |
I found this new breakfast cafe about 10 years ago run by an excellent cook and his 2 sons who waited tables .I thought they were from Macadonia but they were from Albania. One of the boys spoke almost every day of their hope Albania could be granted entrance to the big tournaments ( they were banned or not recognized back then ) and how their fans are incredible . A couple of years later they sold the cafe and moved back home to open a pizza place I think but I hope they are enjoying the Euros and running a succesful resturant . The father always made soup in the morning and gave me a huge bowl for free almost every visit because not too many people came for lunch only breakfast . I miss him he was a nice man

Euros Match Fred on 19:59 - Jun 19 by BrianMcCarthy | Sweet Jesus! Flower of Scotland hits me every time. |
Discussing it with Mrs Chef last night who thought it was some ancient standard, in fact was written by a folk musician in the mid 1960s! Scotland didn't adopt it as an anthem till 1990 when the rugby team sang it (watch The Grudge documentary about their Five Nations match with England, it's great).

La Marseillaise by a country mile, Flower of Scotland, especially looking at the fans when they’re singing it, wow the emotion, you an almost feel it! After that pretty much any other the God Save the King which is such a dirge it actually brings you down not lifts you up!

About 16 years older than the Fields of Athenry! I might be in a minority, but I think Flower of Scotland is a bit of a dirge, with the underlying message that we aren’t as good as we used to be (though it’s fair comment on Scottish football). It’s more self-pitying than stirring. The Welsh anthem is an absolute belter by comparison, rousing and inspiring. For all the good it’s doing at the moment…

1979!! Didn't realise that either. Or quite why Liverpool fans adopted the tune.

I first saw Irish fans singing it at a Euro 96 qualifying playoff at Anfield against Holland. Maybe that started it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_1996_qualifying_play-off I'd completely forgotten about the format, and that the Republic and the North could barely be separated in qualifying, yet the 1993 qualifier is so clear in my mind.

Yes, written by the Corries in 1967. I grew up (in Scotland) presuming it was ancient until discovering that it was actually younger than me. Rugby fans always sang it at 5 nation games. In 1990 the Scotland team had it played as their run-out music and so all the fans belted it out in the stadium. And the Scotland team also spooked England out a bit by marching out not running out. They went on to win 13-7 and took the last ever 5 Nations title. I couldn't get tickets to the game so went to a west end pub instead (Mathers Bar). I ended up standing on a table leading the whole pub in several (deafening) renditions of it purely to take the piss out of my English mate who'd come to join us. As Scotland so seldom win anything you have enjoy the moment.....

Singing a dirge like song about a battle 700 years ago is embarrassing in the extreme. My Scottish brother in law can't listen to it as it makes him cringe a bit.
