60% of people in Wales prefer Mark Drakeford's Covid approach to England's on 09:58 - Jan 21 by johnlangy | All the money to fund the furlough scheme for the whole of the UK was borrowed by the Westminster government. They borrowed the money because the devolved governments are not allowed to. When the Welsh and Scottish governments decided that their Nations should go into lockdown, as they were perfectly entitled to, Westminster said no to furlough. When the Westminster Government decided that England should go into lockdown, as they were entitled to, furlough was reintroduced. Immediately. So what does that say ? Wales and Scotland were being more careful than England in their approach. But Westminster said no to funding, effectively saying you are doing the wrong thing even though healthcare has been devolved. What if Westminster had decided to be more careful than Wales and Scotland ? Do any of you think there would have been any delay in funding furlough in that scenario ? That last one was a rhetorical question. The answer is no. Whatever you may think about how the Welsh and Scottish governments handle healthcare, the fact is that health has been devolved and they alone should be responsible for their own Nations care. By denying furlough Westminster deliberately undermined the two governments. |
Wales and Scotland have had equal access the furlough money allocated by the UK government. The UK government have followed the scientific evidence as to when lockdown started and ended and the UK chancellor provided very generous furlough funding to save 11 million people being made redundant or layed off on no pay.

'Wales and Scotland have had equal access the furlough money allocated by the UK government'. They've had that access when Westminster decided they should have access. Health is either devolved or it isn't. The UK government have not followed the scientific evidence as to when lockdown started and ended. What they did was to take the evidence and consider it along with many other factors (keeping the economy open eg) and decide on a way forward. The Welsh and Scottish governments have done the same but decided to be a bit more careful, as is their prerogative. Whatever you think about the Welsh and Scottish governments they were elected democratically by the Welsh and Scottish people. And part of their specific responsibility is healthcare. Westminster has undermined Welsh and Scottish democracy by denying furlough when requested..

You're correct "Whatever you think about the Welsh and Scottish governments they were elected democratically by the Welsh and Scottish people. And part of their specific responsibility is healthcare." and in that even prior to the pandemic they have failed miserably. The median waiting time for NHS hospital treatment in Wales was 24.5 weeks in February 2021ĆĀ up from 10 weeks a year earlier. In England it was 12.6 weeks. Wales has a target for people to wait no longer than 36 weeks for treatment, but four in 10 patients did not receive medical care within this timeframe. Gething, the Welsh health minister, acknowledged it will take five years to clear the backlog of treatment. The very structure of the health service in Wales has overly complicated the delivery of healthcare as the service was ādevolved into seven independent health boardsā, each operating an individual annual budget so no joined up thinking In England, the NHS has a greater degree of operational independence although it works to a mandate set by the Department of Health whereas in Wales is run by civil servants.

They denied furlough money to Wales when it was asked for because the Welsh government decided to go into lockdown before England, as is their right. They then started paying it when they (Westminster) decided they wanted England to go into lockdown. So they denied it until it suited them to pay for it.

The isolation rules are the biggest barrier to returning to normality now. We'll know we're most of the way there when they're ditched completely. Stay at home if you've got symptoms, otherwise get on with it.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |
