I have started a new thread as the remain thread seems to have locked with no new comments allowed.

Michael Barnier has admitted that Britain could not have achieved is vaccine success if we had remained members of the EU. He added that Britain and America have proved that taking risks can sometimes be worthwhile.

So far over 5,000,000 EU citizens have applied for UK settlement status. Clearly they find living in the UK preferable to returning to the EU.

Meanwhile the unelected commissioner for media and broadcasting has decreed less UK made TV and films should be shown in the EU as it is watering down their culture. Strange they have not decided to cut down on USA made films and TV. Explain the logic in that.

I am sure our friends in the ROI will welcome more Polish, Latvian, Greek TV rather than British TV.

Maybe they have a job here and don't want to return to unemployment. Well done to them.

The film bit is ridiculous if true.

The EU have longstanding rules about European content on streaming / video on demand services etc and stipulate that at last 30% of the output from Amazon, Netflix etc has to be European content. Some countries have deviated away from the 30% requirement and actually insist on more - in France it’s 60%. The rules also make provision re spending of money on programming etc. The changes don’t apply to US material as it was already subject to restrictions as it was a “third country.” Now that we are outside of the EU and to all intensive purposes a “third country” the same restrictions which were already being applied on US content will now being imposed on us.

Apparently the film industry have been warning the Government about this potential change for a few years.

So the EU limit is 30% but some countries have 60%? Is it a rule or a guideline or maybe countries ignore it?

There was a typo in my original reply, it should read “at least” as opposed to “at last”. If a country wants to impose a limit over and above the 30% threshold they can, France have gone for 60%.

What I notice about your post was those 5 million who have applied, we were told there were around 3 million EU citizens here. Now it seems there are 5 million who want to stay even after quite a few returned from whence they came and there will still be more here.

Governments have lied to us about immigration, that or they are just completely useless, most likely a mix of the two.

If they don't know how many are here legally how can they have any idea of illegal numbers? Then you have to look at benefits payments, the amount of UK taxpayers money leaving this country to be sent "home" by immigrants is obviously much higher too.
#That's not a complaint about immigrants by the way, it's questioning why governments are either lying to us (and why?) or why do we put up with such dross being in charge?

With so many businesses saying they are struggling to find people who want to work we have to make work pay, the minimum wage has to be higher and then people have to be better off in work than on benefits. It's anathema to me that British born people won't get out of bed for minimum wage yet people have come here from across the world and work long hours in a poorly paid job and be happy with it.
If we had fewer people on benefits we could give more support to people who really need it.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That was one of the problems with free movement within the EU nobody had any idea how many people were moving about there were no records kept you just walked in a quick flash of your passport and that was it.

What is telling is over 5 million EU citizens prefer to live in the UK than the EU.

It is very telling, how many Brits have preferrd to stay in the EU? Is it a 1.3 million? Most of those though, seem to have retired to a sunny spot whereas the EU citizens who came here, came to work. The Poles that I know have a very strong work ethic.

More good news on UK trade.

Exports in May grew by 4.9% with an increase of exports to the EU up 8%
Imports fell by 1.1% meaning our trade deficit fell to 2.2 billion from 3.5 billion.

In the 3 months to May our surplus in services were £28.1 billion down £0.1 billio.

Remember when the January trade figures were released in Februaryand all the remainers blamed the large drop in trade, despite all economic analysis saying trade dropped as in the three months prior everyone importer in the UK was stockinhg just in case we did not get a trade deal. They also said trade wax down to the start of the coronavirus lockdown throughout Europe and of the closure of French ports for a week.

Remainers other predictions
There would be gridlock at Dover. Failed to happen.

Our service industry exports to the EU would crash. Failed to happen.

No doubt the anti UK remainers will be along shortly to say they got it wrong.

Your last line is very wrong, no, they won't. The signs are encouraging and once we are through covid, into whatever the new normal is, maybe we will be OK. I still live in hope!

Lots of substance to this, I think’ it was Mrs Thatchers Government back in the 80’s who stopped the record keeping re immigration. I suspect it suited their needs at the time, less bureaucracy, less money/costly, less transparency etc and none of the governments since have been bothered about it. Migration Watch has consistently questioned and raised concerns regarding the numbers migrating to the UK.

Thatcher started it and no government since has even tried to get to grips with it, in fact it probably suited Blairs agenda, the giant socialengineering project. It has to be sorted out. No wonder there are issues, the government are saying things that peope just don't believe because their eyes tell them otherwise.

Governments have to do better and be more honest with us. Given his history, I can't see that starting with Bojo.

This is good news.

We still have over 200,000 people less working than there were at the start of the pandemic and the time we left the EU, but it’s significant progress in the right direction. The BBC were reporting the average pay rise had gone up 7.4% ( but there was no context to the rise as regards to timelines etc).

Hopefully most of the vacancies will be filled and a significant number of those who are unemployed can find work - and those who don’t want to work will be “guided” into jobs.

The BBC reports a record number of job vacancies though so hopefully it will soon change for the better.
