Unless they were wearing contacts I don’t think so.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Any of that Manc indie stuff , especially Oasis
Pink god awful Floyd , only good for funerals
Muse
Coldplay
Mumford and his offsprings , might as well listen to nails on a blackboard
Just about every band that,s played the Feelgood festival
the Bee Gees
Eminem or anything rap , it,s not music it,s just talking
Phil Collins or Genesis post Peter Gabriel
The Grateful Dead
The Floaters , remember Float on? They can float right off

The list is endless and I think that I have a pretty broad spectrum in musical taste

How about the Eclectic Light Orchestra?

10538 Overture by ELO is awesome. Paul Weller robbed it big time for Changing Man.

I know what you mean

I didn't listen to Soul or Motown in my teens, mainly because it was seen as "other" than rock. That was before it became clear that much of the rock that emerged in the 60s owed a huge debt to blues (as has already been alluded to) and music emanating from Black communities in general

The Manc music that's played at Dale is just a further derivative of those genres, and just feels very contrived and stale compared to it's origins. It's also been alluded to how people tend to latch onto what's around during their formative teenage years and retain an emotional attachment to it, so i get why it was popular during the late 80s/early 90s for that generation

I don't think it's necessarily about mellowing with age; more to do with having a greater range of experiences which are equally vivid but which one genre can't encompass

Great thread.

The 1975 have won or at least been nominated for every award under the sun and I will never understand why. They're still not as shite as the Courteeners though.

Also: Gerry Cinnamon. Ed Sheeran for the fake Stone Island brigade.

1975‘s music is utter shite but I think my biggest hatred is Matthew Healy just comes across as a whiney posh boy trying hard to be edgy.

Only thing I know about them is they went to Wilmslow High school (a friend of mine teaches there). So posh sounds right.

For shit bands, The Smiths were tedious and make shit crisps.

Solo artists - Eminem is about as edgy and threatening as St Winifred's School Choir.

Radiohead - some really good songs but not worthy of the legendary status some seem to give them.

Oasis - loved them when I was young but in hindsight incredibly dull other than a few early b-sides. Terrible live too.

Liam Gallagher - sub oasis songs sung badly. Whatever singing talent he had disappeared 20 years ago.

Sex Pistols - all hype, zero substance. Why listen to them when you can listen to the Stooges?

The Beatles did more great songs in 66-67 alone than all the above combined have done in their entire career.

The Ramones - Don't mind them, but when you've heard one song you've heard them all.
Nirvana- never got into that whole 'grunge' thing.

How about mixing it up a bit and naming some bands you think were/are underrated?

Creedence Clearwater Revival
China Crisis

The Pale Fountains completely passed me by until I heard 'Thank You' on Six Music t'other night. I will be searching out some more of their stuff.

First and last on that list for sure.

Easy to write Exit Calm off as early Verve rip offs, but they were so much better than that (plus I went to uni with the guitarist).

As for Suoergrass, In It For The Money was one of the best albums of the so-called Britpop era. Was due to see them next month, too.
