Bolton Wanderers: Doncaster Rovers match postponed over welfare concerns

BBC. Breaking news

Bolton Wanderers have postponed Tuesday's League One match against Doncaster Rovers, amid welfare concerns for the young players in their squad.

Financially-stricken Wanderers have been in administration since May.

They were only able to field three senior outfield players for Saturday's 5-0 loss to Tranmere Rovers.

"Whilst the threat of further sanctions is obvious, nothing can be allowed to impact on the welfare of such a young group," a club statement said.

"With so many senior players injured or unavailable, the squad has performed heroically."

Manager Phil Parkinson claimed after the Tranmere defeat that he had written to the English Football League to voice his concerns about player welfare.

What a joke. Since when do teams get to P-P for being crap? The EFL should not have let Bolton start the season.

If Bolton's takeover goes through and they sign a load've senior players before the window shuts and go on to beat Doncaster when the game is rearranged then that's a pretty shit do. 3 pts could be the difference between Donny getting playoffs/promotion and not.

Fook sentimentality and "history" of these clubs. The EFL need to grow a pair otherwise whats the point of the rest of us playing by the rules and upholding the integrity of the competition.

I thought the OP was a wind up EGP feature.

P-P because taking the medicine means they will get beat?

Horse poop that in every sense of the word.

The EFL Need to come down hard now on Bolton and bury.

Between them they are spoiling the football season for all the other teams in League 1.

its a right mess at Bolton. They tried making out the takeover was an hour away when Bassini stepped in a couple of weeks ago but clearly not the case. A Bolton mate reckons that the attraction to the takeover is the hotel, which is classed as separate from the football club somehow. Would seem Football Ventures are reluctant to take on the club without the hotel, but the guy from BooHoo who Bury fans were stalking fancies the hotel on its own.

The longer this drags on, the more difficult it will be for a takeover. Unlike Bury, by allowing Bolton to start the season, they have made survival almost an impossibility. The implications from this could see any potential new owner see this season as a waste of time. Why stump up £3 million on a wage bill if relegation is a near certainty? Save the money for getting out of League 2. But then that leaves 40 more farcical games where teams are competing against a set of kids.

Doncaster must be fuming and rightly so.

They are also more than likely going to see their game at bury a week on Saturday disappear.

This whole situation completely ruins the integrity of the league competition, especially for all the other clubs.

Presumably another points' deduction for Bolton?

At least they turned up last Tuesday!

At least, when they go t!ts up, we haven't any points to be expunged.

Makes you wonder how much welfare concerns they would have, if the same group of youngsters had somehow won their first three games. Not so much I would wager.

They've gained 1 league point so far this season. This is a better points haul (and equal GD) to Southend.

Can we expect our away game at Southend to be P-P due to "welfare". Fookin piss-take.

I fully expect the EFL to continue their leniency with Bolton and just let them rearrange this.

Whilst they're not responsible, there has to be big changes at EFL level to prevent any repeat. This season is a farce. It's obvious but not team should not be allowed to be entered into a season without having the wherewithall to back it up. Take June 1st as the starting date, and at that point if there are any outstanding wages or a team is in an embargo, CVA or admin, have any outstanding CCJ's, it has to be enforced expulsion from the league. It won't ever come to that, but whilst the punishment is a points penalty here or there or games suspended until teams can get squads together, it will continue.

Exactly this, a couple of draws and a win and they'd be playing on Saturday.

The club themselves deciding on whether they want to play or not makes a complete mockery out of the competition, if Hendo gets injured can we postpone our matches until he's fit again on the proviso that over the last 4-5 seasons we've had no one else who can consistently score and therefore we are not as competitive at this level? If the players welfare was that big a deal to them, they should have postponed all of their games from the start of the season when they knew full well that they didn't have a senior squad to play their games with.

If I were Doncaster I'd be writing to the EFL to ask that the game isn't postponed and that if Bolton aren't willing to field a team the points are automatically given to them. Unless there's a rule where you can pick and choose when you want to play your matches?

They still haven't had a punishment handed to them for not playing the Brentford fixture last season.

I think this is a real watershed moment for Bolton. They are now the equivalent of Bury. Takeover is a no-go, seemingly collapsed. They are in administration, currently with no survival plan apparent and clearly won't be able to use the same players in future games if their mental health is being affected. No other players available, so how do they fulfil any more fixtures ?

More disciplinary procedures to follow for another postponed game. More points deducted (probably)

I can see their 'interested parties' all walking away. A deal was never really done, despite the jiggery-pokery behind the scenes.

The only difference between them and Bury is that BWFC at least communicated with the EFL when needed. Everything else is still a shambles.

The EFL have stated that they are awaiting the takeover to go through before issuing the punishment for the Brentford game. Might not be this season the way its going.

Funny how it was ok by Jack Dearden and fatty mc ginley when they took a point
off Coventry, yet on radio Manchester on Saturday afternoon after two beatings
Dearden bleated on about there welfare. Alan Gowling at least said they should
easily be capable of playing 2/3 games a week.enough said.

But think of the poor children. It's not because we're losing, it's the poor children who cannot run about for 90 minutes.

At the very minimum they should get a 3 points deduction for each postponed game.

Just how can Bolton get away with making there own decisions when to play?.

Serious points deductions required if they cant field a team then they need to be fooked right off along with the gigglers.

Maybe Phoenix 1885 Trotting Shakers could be tried at burrs park in 2021.

Not sure even the clubs combined efforts would see them able to organise anything they are both an utter disgrace.

Whilst I don't have much sympathy for Bury's situation, looking at how it is unfolding at Bolton, now what is the difference between Bury and Bolton in their situation of being able to satisfy the EFL they can play games?

They both have no senior team, both in some form of administration with no takeover imminent. So why are Bolton being allowed to play (when they decide they want to) and Bury aren't? They either both should be allowed or both should be in the same position r.e. their league status.

Rumour is Bolton made the announcement without consulting Doncaster.

Doncaster are continuing to prepare for the game as normal and will turn up at Bolton tomorrow unless advised otherwise by the EFL

Bolton convinced the EFL a takeover was imminent so they'd be able to complete the season (yeah right) . Bury are worse at negotiating with the EFL.

When were spanked at home last season 4-0 on a few occasions, we should have contacted the EFL.

When we lost in injury time to Wimbledon and LM left the field in tears, did we ring the EFL and tell them that it was too distressing for our players when we lose games ?

However inexperienced these players are, they are nevertheless in their chosen careers at a professional club. I can sympathise with every one of them, but losing matches happens. It isn't their fault that their club is a dreadful example of how to run a business.

Phil Parkinson should walk away if things are so bad and show the club he's not prepared to be taken for a ride.

So the EFL have not ruled on this fiasco as yet?

Donny are doing right......they will be fully expecting their 6th goal to go in at 90 + 3 !

What an almighty mess.

Dale v Bolton

Admittedly we had more experience on the pitch, Hendo and Big Jim both 34 and Done 31.

If you look at the age of the 7 youngest players in each team then the average age of those 7 players are

Bolton (19)
Rochdale (20)

They had 4 players who should be considered grown up (24,25,27 and 29)

Even with Hendo and Big Jim, the overall average age was

Bolton 21.8
Rochdale 24.3

Senior players injured... They’ve only got 5 and 2 of those are goalkeepers.

Translated as we have players ready to sign but can’t until the take over happens.

Letting them start the season has already made it an uneven playing field. Tranmere and Wycombe are likely to be nearer to the bottom of the table and they have an advantage now over the likes of Southend or other strugglers.
