Chris Martin once quoted 'it's great to be in the most unpopular popular band around'. I liked their first single Clocks and still do, but anything thereafter, nothing. I guess for me it is the over hyped press they have received and the mainstreamness if there is such a word, of their music and following. Here is a band like so many before them, followed by legions of bandwagonners or lemmings who feel they have to like them, because everyone else does and Chris Evans says so, never mind the quality or lack of it of their musical creativity. Thus, Coldplay are the band to follow and nothing else matters. This is the same for U2 as well.
I also find most of their music just plain dreary, without wit, wisdom or punch and Martin's high pitched moaning voice too much to bear. But that's just my opinion. Others will have theirs I'm sure. |
U2 is a great example and one I always make. It's like they have attracted an army of fans because their fame has snowballed, rather than their ability or quality of their output. They are just wishy washy and appeal to the most common denominator and people talk about them being the best band in the world... Come on... I too liked Clocks and a few of their singles around the time of Parachutes, but that was so long ago and they have done fck all memorable or decent since.
They are the Michael McIntyre of music and it really grinds my gears that they are referred to as a 'rock' band. |  |

That sums it up perfectly. To those with MOR taste it is the background/soundtrack to their lives; if they ventured away from Radio 1/2/Heart/Smooth they might see something that sparks them into life. I have nothing against them per se, but when they are selling out stadiums and fukking movie stars, then surely somethings wrong!
Had some friends see them at Wembley last week and had to bite my lip when they were sharing their joy at having feasted on the artistry of Sir Christopher of Martin and mates.
Mrs West loves Adele, but the chatty ex-council bird thing getting to Lilly Allen levels of irritating/choke to death with a microphone. |  | | |

Back to Glastonbury itself, there seemed to be a quite a few African bands about and good they were too. A very underestimated niche of music me thinks. There's some good stuff coming out of Mali including a decent Afro/blues band. If only I can remember their name. |  |

I can totally understand why Clocks might have been the first of theirs you came across - it was played to death. I think the year it came out Channel 4 used it in about 60% of their promo idents. I still shudder involuntarily whenever I hear it | | | |

On the Adele thing, in this age of specialised musical tastes I have got a lot of admiration for singers like Adele and Amy Winehouse or bands like The Verve that can transcend the divide and appeal to a mass audience. They seem like a throwbacks to the time of Dusty Springfield. The only problem I've got with Adele is that her material seems a bit limited with just one or two big hits, whereas Dusty had loads of big hits. Maybe there aren't those big hit writers around any more. I'll leave it for others to decide if the girl next door stuff is a performance or not. |  |

Staying away from the headliners, looked like some gems on some of the smaller stages.
Rocky NTI ( i think) was quite interesting, bit Jam-esque, great energy on stage, its great to hear up and coming acts and all types of music.
Tame Impala were decent and i'll also mention Christina & The Queens for getting everyone moving in our living room! | | | |
