We would be mad to move Ayew on. 13:34 - May 17 with 32122 viewsSheffieldjack

There are many news outlets indicating that whether or not we keep Andre Ayew next season is down to Huw Jenkins. I think it would be madness to move our top scorer on. Surely a better option would be to keep him for at least one more season and perhaps bring in his brother, Jordan, as a further attacking option!

Ayew is the sort of player you build a team around.

In fact, a spine of Ayew, Siggi, Cork, Amat / Ferd and Fab is something to build around for the future.

Monk tried that with Shelvey [who is similar to Ayew in too many ways] and look where that got Monk, the Swans, and Shelvey.

O.K., on the plus side, it got us Guidolin and a mid-table finish.

I don't care. I'm old. I don't have to.

Square peg round hole.

That square peg scored the same amount of goals as Diego Costa, 1 less than alexis Sanchez and scored more than Martial, Firmino and payet to name a few. You've gotta be utterly clueless to suggest a club like Swansea, who are hardly blessed with goalscorers should be Happy to let him go.

Yeah, an amazing improvement on the team that finished 8th the season.

Utterly clueless indeed.

We need to build a team not a collection of talented individuals. Guidolin has said this week that his preferred formation for next season is 4 2 3 1 and 4 3 3.

We need the players that can fit best into those formations and we need to maximise the spending power we have to find the right players to fit. In the first formation, we've seen enough this year to suggest that Ayew won't be the best fit unless it's as the '1' up top. In the second formation where I'd imagine we play with narrower wide men rather than pure wingers he fits into the '3' up top. It depends therefore on the resources we have but he certainly has a role he can play.

Our issue though is we need players whichever formation we choose. Notably full backs (at least one) a dominating centre back and in midfield. We have to free up resource to bring those in. Unfortunately the players we'd like to see go will not be the ones who bring in money. So we have to make difficult choices.

Personally I'd like to keep Ayew, but I wouldn't be broken hearted if we sell to bring in a top striker. If we do keep him then I think we're looking at him as a striker in which case we won't be bringing in a top name in that position but would instead go for a younger or cheaper model.

He seems to have done well all of his career without playing the number 9 role. I think he's best suited to 433 but we need a better number 9 and better full backs than we've had this year. Hopefully in Kingsley we have the answer to the left back problem.

He is better suited to 4 3 3 definitely. As I said in a 4 2 3 1 he can only be the '1' but in which case we may not bring in a specialist striker for big bucks as we may not have the resource.

Kingsley has looked good. But I would sell Taylor, move on Rangel other than as emergency cover (coaching role perhaps?) but even then it could be that one of the kids can do that (Connor Roberts?) and keep Naughton who can cover both sides and bring in another. God knows what Tabanou does though - can he be coached? Possibly - the stuff he used to play in France seemed good, but it's a bit telling that his loans has also not worked so it can't be just Monk that was the issue with him.

In an ideal world we keep all our best players and buy new as well but I can't see that as realistic.

If it was a choice between the two I'd keep Siggy over Ayew.

You can, if you have a way of playing and a good recruitment system. It all goes tits up when a manager comes in and decides he wants to rip all that up and play the diamond every week.

As always it would depend on the price offered, but his contribution last season and ability as a player is being far too easily dismissed by a surprisingly large number of people.

I fall into that category. I've an irrational 'meh' feeling about Ayew. A quality player, but you have to sacrifice Gylfi or an out and out striker, who hopefully would get at least 15 goals a season if we had a decent one, to fit him in. Or he needs to change his game. Or we go to 442, or 352 (but that would make Montero, Routs and Barrow redundant. He's a funny one.

I'd be interested to see what Ayew can do in a full season as a striker.

Never been able to work out why he was ever seen as a winger. Lethal in front of goal, yet doesn't do anything out wide to suggest that that's his position.

I want us to play with width next season, like we have been lately, with Gylfi behind Ayew. Most want a new striker, but I'd be happy with Ayew and some strengthening in other positions.

Please define "best player," but omit reference to "top scorer," as he is "top scorer" by one goal (Gylfi with 1 fewer goal on two fewer games), and Ayew is being compared against a real paucity of any other kind of scorer except Gylfi.

12 goals for a mid fielder is pretty good going no matter who he is compared to.

We could hire Jesus and he still wouldn't shape Ayew into something he isn't. I don't think that leopard's spots are for changing. I'm with Lisa on this (I hadn't read her post before I posted last on this thread). For us, the blend of the team is more important than the quality of any individual. When we get that right and add quality that suits (e.g. Michu) we're flying. I'm not sure Ayew ticks that box, although I'd love a way to get the best out of him as he is undoubtedly a quality player.

I think you need re-calibrating,

You need to learn how football works! You're one of the ones on here who'll be slating the club next season when ayew is gone and the player who is brought in to replace him is a dud! How about we focus on replacing players who haven't brought much to the team and not one who's scored more than 25% of the goals.
