Eleven men back 18:39 - Nov 14 with 2603 viewsonedalefan

Can someone explain why we have to bring all 11 back to our penalty area when the opposition get a corner or free kick near the box. Surely leaving at least 1 man up field gives their defence something to think about and could give an outlet for a quick breakaway if the ball gets cleared.

I think you'd have to ask Hilly that question - but doubt you'd get an answer! For that matter, I've got about 20 questions I'd love him to answer - but I'm not holding my breath!

There is absolutely no sense at all in the tactic of bringing everyone back.
Three main reasons-
A)it increases the chances of something going wrong in the penalty area due to congestion
B) Allows oppostion to attack in greater numbers, and it leads to A) above.,
C) We don't have an outlet for when or if we win the ball to launch a quick counter attack.

Think we should leave at least two up, which forces them to leave at least three back. Leave the two quickest men up, or two least valuable at defending.

Lots of teams do it now. It's a modern fad like the one were you have a left footed player out on the right wing and vice versa.

Both are crazy ideas especially bringing all eleven back at a corner. If you put one man on the half way line the opposition will have to bring at least one player back if not two. Normally a centre half. So that mimimises the oppositions threat and makes the goalmouth slightly less crowded and chaotic.

But what do I know.

'Two least valuable at defending'. Who would that be for the first goal this afternoon?

Seem to remember that we went through a phase of putting one man wide right and one wide left on the halfway line to confuse the opposition.

I noticed Wigan brought all their men back to defend our corners. They did have the players to pick up the ball and run, however.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

11 men are back to make it impossible to concede a goal at a set piece or corner.
However, most weeks we do concede at set pieces of corners.
The opposition are not playing fair.

Yes it doesn't work when all our players stand like statues in a line - and the opposition move towards our goal to score.
