TBH he's correct in criticising footy for the lack of referee respect.I know it's the game we all love but I have to admit the one thing I like about rugby is the respect for the ref.

He doesn't criticise football for lack of respect to the ref. When he thinks a rugby player is pretending to be injured, he likens him to a footballer. I agree with you that a part of the culture in rugby is showing respect to the ref and not arguing back. I think that's a credit to the sport.

Sad fact is in football the players are bigger names than the referee, the officials simply don't have the balls to stand up to these big names. The majority of the public would probably recognise 1 or 2 welsh rugby players if they passed them on the street. A high % would recognise Nigel Owens every time, he's a bigger celebrity than the players are. From that status comes a level of awe and respect. Let's be honest, it's not a 'rugby refs' are better thing, it's only Owens who demonstrates this public school headmaster like control and prowess. The rest are s**t and gutless like their footballing counterparts. Imagine if a football ref had legged it off the pitch the way Joubert did in one of the quarter finals.

There is respect from the players to all the referees at the top level. If it is not respect, they at least pay them deference. I don't think it's anything to do with awe or celebrity, respecting the ref is just a part of the game. It must be a much more technically complicated game to referee, but rugby players are much easier to control than footballers.

There is actually a ten yard rule mind take that away and you'll see respect.

Of course it is, which is why we need more ex players refereeing at the top level. Why on earth is a £250,000 a week footballer going to respect a normal average working chap, for who refereeing probably isn't even his full time occupation. Compare that to Owens, who no doubt is at the top of the earners in the game, more than most of the players, and is far more recognisable and of a higher status than many of the players he will referee. Stick a well known ex professional football player as a referee for one game and watch it change instantly.

Because they have no interest in refereeing. He isn't more recognisable than Wales rugby players either, he is just in the limelight at the moment. It was Dan Biggar a couple of weeks ago.

Refs need to grow a pair, and there needs to be less pressure on them to not give out red cards for things like dissent for the sake of 'not spoiling the match'. Pierluigi Collina was never a footballer as far as I know, and he seemed to manage fine.

I agree they do, but as I say it's a social thing, the gap between the ref and player in rugby is minuscule, compared to football. Collina knew how it worked, probably the biggest 'celebrity' ref the game has known. He was in adverts for all sorts, and even on the cover of a video game for goodness sake. Not to mention at countless numbers of events with the players he would referee on the pitch. Think about it folks.
