Les & Co need to pull their finger out! 13:04 - Jun 16 with 13218 views | oldhoop | We only have; 2 keepers - Green & McCarthy (1 needed) 5 defenders - Hill, Caulker, Onuoha, Suk-Young & Traore (at least 4 more needed) 8 Midfielders - Phillips (staying?), Henry (re-signing?),Hoillet, Fer (staying?), Sandro (???), Luongo, Gladwin & now Mackie (before departures 2 more needed) 2 Forwards - Austin (soon to go) & JET (3 needed) A total squad of 17 (plus possibly the youngsters Greco-Cox, Doughty, Ehmer and Furlong) That looks extremely, worryingly, thin!!! Bear in mind the extra games in the Championship and no 25 man restriction boy do we need some extra resource!!! At least 10 more players and pronto.(plus replacements for any further leavers) This has all the hallmarks of another disaster and I am completely not taken in by the "new world" mantra. We have had 11 leavers so far and have recruited just 4. (if Mackie goes ahead) with bigger squads in the Championship we are woefully short of numbers and the season is 6/7 weeks away. Please please lets not go into another season with just a couple of forwards, the successful clubs have at least 5 we surely can't fall into that trap again, can we? Come on Les get your finger out or we will struggle to stay in this division let alone contend for promotion!
Les & Co need to pull their finger out! on 21:39 - Jun 16 with 2791 views | DylanP | 1.Defense: Our defense was terrible in the Prem, but will look good in the Championship: Hill, Caulker, Onuoha, Suk-Young, Fulong and Traore. 6 players for 4 positions, that looks OK. 2. Midfield: We have Henry and Sandro in the center, and then have Phillips and Hoillet out wide and Luongo, and Fer for good measure, that is more than enough for the Championship. 3. Attack: JET, Gladwin, Mackie and we still have Austin. OK, Austin will be gone soon, but even without him we have three strikers which is one more than we had in the Premiership, and Fer does well up front. Plus, all of them can last 90 minutes. I think we have a very strong squad so far. We need another striker for when Austin leaves and one or two wingers for when/if Phillips leaves and for when Hoilett's hamstring goes. So, I think we are doing OK. No big money signings. Most of the really bad players (yes, I am looking at you SWP) are finally off our books. Pretty good summer so far.

Agreed. Ale would be like a new signing if he can get back to where he was. Imagine having a midfielder with vision who could actually pass the ball?

Les & Co need to pull their finger out! on 14:52 - Jun 16 by RANGERS4EVER | Yeah forgot you can just sign good players with ease. Not like they have clubs trying to keep hold of them or anything. Yeah, lets just spend millions on them just so we have good players. Thats worked before, not like we have FFP or £60m debt Yeah lets just buy players who look good, lets not bother scouting or anything. sure that will work out okay. Yeah, lets all panic, not as if we have two months until the season starts to get good, well scouted players in. Jesus. |
ARRRRGGGGGHH!!!!!! The ease is irrelevant. How many points did Harry Redknapp saying 'it's difficult' get us? No mention of money made. Scouting happens during the season. Not when the players are on the beach. BUYING PLAYERS DURING OR JUST BEFORE THE SEASON DOES NOT WORK. Why do we see the same tired and easily disproved bollocks from every apologist even when they've seen their views disproved emphatically destroyed every season for the past 4 years?

Les & Co need to pull their finger out! on 09:00 - Jun 17 with 2487 views | derbyhoop | Talk about unnecessary panic. 11 out and 4 in is true, ignoring the 2 EDS players. But Harriman and Ehmer are back from loan spells; Faurlin and Diakite are other options. We'll almost certainly lose Austin and Fer and may lose Phillips, but I can't see too many enquiries for any others. Many of the U21s have been given chances under Les and Ramsey. Expect them to be given more over the course of a 46 game season.

If we can just avoid signing known crocks and get the players fit (like Burnley do) we won't have so many injuries to deal with! Also we need to cut our cloth accordingly, we need a lean squad and youngsters can fill in the gaps on the bench/team this time (no more Chevanton style signings please). They may not be good enough but we can't afford to pay people to be 3rd choice players, just in case the first and second choice get injured. A couple of sensible loans will help too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Simmo, You're missing: Harriman Ehmer Petrasso Donaldson Doughty And it's still 17th June. I think we're in fine shape. But, I think the issue here is around expectations as I have repeatedly said. Those, like you and me, whose expectations are that we don't go down, have players who give 100% all the time and have a team that tries to attack and win games, probably all feel we're in decent shape for the 17th June. Those who still think promotion is a reasonable target or are expecting us to challenge for the play offs, are probably getting nervous, but then, given the transformation we're going through this season in personnel (on and off the pitch), ethos, approach, etc, I think they are silly have these targets and expectations. Just for clarity (as some struggle with the definitions) my "Target" for the team would be to be challenging for the play-offs come April, but with safety being the absolute minimum requirement. My Expectation is that we stay up and play decent football, have a go, and every player (no matter how limited they are) gives 100% at all times. I'd be happy with that and think Ramsey had done a decent job if that's what happens. Finally, finally, I don't think JET is a true centre forward. That spot still needs addressing. I'd like to see Gayle at Palace targeted.

I support Ramsey and didn’t complain about his appointment but I remain unsure whether he’s the right man. By setting expectations as low as you’ve done you immediately create an environment where we think we’re worse than we actually are, where survival and commitment and a ‘have a go attitude’ constitute acceptability. As a result you end up retaining a Manager that a year later you’re still unsure whether he’s the right man for the job. He effectively gets this year free, unless he really does fck up. I don’t believe in creating situations which appear to give a Manager ‘a free hit’. I think back to Hodgson in Euro 2012, expectations were set at rock bottom anything above immediate elimination from the tournament was viewed as some sort of success. In the end we went out to Italy with a whimper, a game I think the Manager could have done much better in. As was, he failed but because expectations were set so low it was just glossed over. Nobody cared. This all stemmed from the level of expectations that were set from the outset. Realistically, we could go into Charlton away with a bloody good team. A team that should be winning more games than it loses next season. If Ramsey doesn’t achieve that, regardless of the performance level or commitment of the players, it should constitute a failure. At the same time to expect an automatic promotion push would be illogical and create an unfair environment for the Manager to work under. It’s about balance, but looking at the players we’ve signed, the ones we may be able to keep and ones that still may come through the door, expectations should be that Loftus road will be a difficult place for any away team to get something from, and when Rangers are on the road they’ll always compete and give you a game. Let’s wait and see.

We're not really disagreeing. You're just struggling with understanding the difference between a target set for the team and our expectations as fans, which based on precious posts over the years surprises me Philmy. They are different. Target: competing for the play off Expectations: we are in this league again next year, ie. we don't get relegated, AND all the players give 100%, AND they have a go and play attacking football. There is no "setting the bar low", as you continually allude to. The point I'm trying to make is that, as things stand, losing all the players we have, losing the players we all know will be off, signing 3 young players from League 1, plus Mackie, you cannot expect us to challenge for the play-offs. Bring in more quality, don't lose everyone we might, and yes, we can reasses expectations. But at present, the point is, we should not be unhappy if ALL those constituent parts of my definition of "expectations" happen. We should be pleased.

Probably wrong but I thought Orr signed a week before season started so pretty late. Adel was a few days before the season started. Phillips and Smith were right at the end of the window. Paladini cocked the Smith one up so we had to loan him until Christmas which meant once a month he'd have to miss a game whilst the loan was re arranged.

i don't think the date matters much. Better to get them early, but you can sign bad players at any time and good players at any time. Obviously better to have the vast majroity of the squad together for all of pre-season, but it's not always possible. And sometimes a bargain is available late on if a club needs to sell.

Orr signed on the 26th of July, that's not late. Taarabt was signed on the 5th of August after spending a year and a half settling in on loan. ' Phillips and Smith were right at the end of the window' and were not ready to play for a long time. Here's the list of players signed late in the last couple years. Rob Hulse, Pascal Chimbonda, Danny Shittu, Joey Barton, Luke Young, Armand Traore, Anton Ferdinand, SWP, Djibril Cisse, Bobby Zamora, Jose Bosingwa, Julio Cesar, Esteban Granero, Stephane M'Bia, Chris Samba, Jermaine Jenas, Andros Townsend, Aaron Hughes, BAE, the boy Tom Carroll, Niko Kranjcar, Guillherme Dellatorre, Modibo Maiga, Will Keane, Kevin Doyle, Sandro, Niko Kranjcar....again.
